How does a person grow up not knowing how to play one of the two mainstay card games of our day and age? I'm being serious. I mean, if they had thrown Gin Rummy at us or something, I could understand, but it's loving poker. At least the basics of the hands is mostly common knowledge to anyone that grows up in a western country (and if you're not in a western country, then nevermind) but it's really straight forward, at least at the basic hand level, and excluding the table in Blackwater, the poker hands generally are very simplistic, for the most part, on the AI's end. Two pair beats one pair Three of a kind beats two pair Seriously, if you just know that, you can easily flush out the table in Armadillo and Chuparosa. Just don't bet like a maniac when you have lovely cards. That's if you know nothing about the game and haven't learned to predict the AI in the game... if you even just know all the basic hands in poker (there's technically only 9) you can be way more aggressively than that.

I've had some hilariously random upsets where I went from having nothing to a flush on the river, and the AI was all cocky with its full house thinking it had won. Goddamn I have far too much fun playing poker in this game. Not as much fun now with (endgame spoiler)Jack, mainly because his Poker commentary loving sucks compared to John's. Also, his voice.

My memory isn't fantastic so I pick and choose what to know about, and card games are not something I care about. Besides that, the AI in the game always seems to read your mind so even if you get good cards they will always fold no matter what. LAST MISSION SPOILERS BE HERE During the cutscene right before the final shootout I was telling miself "Okay, go into Deadeye and kill all these motherfuckers." But then when it started it automatically puts you in deadeye mode. I clicked the RS and it turned it off, and I got filled with holes. And I think people saying "I don't know how to play poker" basically mean "I don't know any of the hands". leidend posted:I worked in a casino for a year and still don't really know how to play poker. I have a pretty good idea when I have a good hand but can never remember what beats what. Order goes: High card (You have jackshit and your hand is based on the card of highest value) 1 Pair 2 Pair 3 of a Kind Straight (Cards all count upwards in order) Flush (All cards are of the same suit) Full House (3 of a kind and 1 pair, read as "[three of a kind face] over [pair face]") 4 of a Kind Straight Flush (Cards all count upwards in order and are all the same suit) Depending on where you play, (specifically with Hold'Em, that is) a Flush sometimes is higher than a Full House. The power of a hand is entirely based on the probability of you being dealt it, which is why with Hold'Em, a Full House's probability is actually a little higher, whereas a Flush's probability actually ends up being slightly lower. In RDR, a Full House beats a Flush. In terms of gauging comparable hands, higher card values win basically always, with the exception being a flush. If they're the same card values, higher suits win. Suit order from lowest to highest is Diamonds, Clubs, Hearts, and then Spades, so a Spade flush always beats a Club flush, regardless of the value of the actual cards involved. If you legitimately end up tying, the pot is split, which I have had happen to me once in this game in Blackwater, so it does actually follow all of the rules. EDIT: And because it's all Hold'Em, it's actually physically impossible for two people to have flushes of different suits, so that exception rule is actually a moot point. This is another reason that Flushes are often considered higher value than Full Houses in Hold'Em. ALFbrot posted:I kind of dig the way you can switch your third-person shoulder orientation by hitting left and right on the d-pad. Yeah, that's something from Uncharted that I seriously wish every game would let you do nowadays. There's really no excuse. Last night I got Sharpshooter Rank 9 in the oddest way. I had already disarmed 2 people, but had yet to shoot the hats off of 2 people (I was planning to head back to Mexico to do that). Instead I completed the challenge during the late game mission where you have to stop the crows from eating the corn out of the silo. It was pretty funny shooting at them and seeing the challenge complete come up. Maybe they had tiny hats on?

On an unrelated note, I noticed some people complaining about Liar's Dice earlier in the thread. I played a round the other day, and not only was it pretty clear how to play but it's also incredibly easy to win. The AI always seems to make the dumbest bluffs (Hmm, you say there's five ones and there are only four dice left? Sure, sounds reasonable) and they call you out for reasonable bets. It doesn't pay worth a drat but it's not difficult at all.

So, is there any purpose for the skins/meat/etc. other than selling them? The first (and so far only) time I jumped on multiplayer, I was invited to a posse that said they were hunting for Sasquatch. Since I had no idea what I was doing, I just got lost and mauled by cougars. I got the distinct impression that I was being hosed with.

Just watching it this game seems really reminiscent of Gun. Which, to be fair, was Activision basically stealing GTA and reskinning it as a western in the first place. But what's striking is it really seems to have more in common with Gun than with Red Dead Revolver, which I really loved but wasn't much of a sandbox. So I wish they released a little more of a successor to Revolver in gameplay as well as "spirit." About all I recognize as a carry-over is the quickdraw.

I find it interesting that people complain so much about Jack's voice considering most of the bitching on the forums pre-release were focused on John's voice. The social club 100% page sure updates oddly. It still doesn't show the last 6 or 7 missions, but the percentage complete is correct. It also hasn't updated all of the bounty locations and so I'm not sure which ones I have left. Only like 2 remaining.
