Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. :)

I saw Dettmann & Klock at Awakenings Festival last saturday and they played hands down the best set of the entire festival. Dark and deep yet extremely driving and powerful, make sure to see their entire set tomorrow, as they know how to build like few others.

Starts really deep and slow at around 113bpm, ending closer to 124bpm. Mostly a mixture of house, tech-house and techno

It's a great remix compared to the original that made a impact on many djs and music producers. I have my own personal reasons on putting it into the mix, thanks for your opinion and concern.

I'm not saying it's a bad track, I'm just saying it was played to death years ago. I was always fond of that Star 69 remix, however (still have a whitelabel of it on my shelf somewhere)

And for what it's worth, the reason that track is good is because of this guy

edit: ok I looked it up and it came out in 2000, I didn't even realize it was that old. I'm just turning into an old jaded gently caress, ignore me

My original comment was a bit snarky so your response was justified. It's all good :)

The reason I mentioned Martin Buttrich is because he actually did all the real work on all of Timo's productions behind the scenes. His solo stuff is just as good, if not better

All right I figured I'd jump onboard here and post one of my mixes so you guys can get a feel for my style... I'm getting Serato in a few days and gonna be posting up hella new mixes, but for now, here's an older mix from February of 2007. It's a mix of techno/tech house, recorded live on my 1200MKIIs and Denon DNX-1500 mixer I had at the time. I've been DJing since 2000, when I started with some Stanton STR8-60s and a 2 channel Gemini mixer with no EQ :v: Come a long way since then.

Hope you all enjoy :)

Long time since I've posted a mix on SA...

Inspired by the blog posts of Jeff Mills and the work of a local DJ called Stroef, I've been dreaming to do some sort of conceptual mixtape.

quote:

On June 28, 2010, Voyager 2 completed 12,000 days of continuous operations since its launch on August 20, 1977. For nearly 33 years, the venerable spacecraft has been returning unprecedented data about the giant outer planets, the properties of the solar wind between and beyond the planets and the interaction of the solar wind with interstellar winds in the heliosheath. Having traveled more than 21 billion kilometers on its winding path through the planets toward interstellar space, the spacecraft is now nearly 14 billion kilometers from the sun. Traveling at the speed of light, a signal from the ground takes about 12.8 hours to reach the spacecraft.

The result is a four piece mixtape, starting of with a sort of soundscape (Leaving Earth) and then gradually taking off towards various forms of techno. The second part (Deep Space) is spacy dubbish techno with a lot of housey sounds, the third part (The Nebula) consists mostly of driving nu style techno and the final part (Planetary Descent) is made of deeper and harder techno.

Total time of this voyage: almost 3.5hrs.

No soundcloud this time, because it's too long for my account :gonk:

First post in this thread. After re-listening to it, I want to share this last mix that I made, about half a year ago.

http://www.mediafire.com/?yettz3n4qyz

The tracklist is as follows:

Enya - Winter (Misshin remix)
The Streets - In The Middle (Nero remix)
Tek-One ft. Cullen - Hate You
Udachi & Jubilee - Smoke Rings
Ctrl Z & Freestylers feat. Navigator - Ruffneck 09 (instrumental)
Cut & Run - Outta Space remix 1
Zero 7 - Medicine Man (Noob remix)
Major Lazer - Pon De Floor (BeatauCue remix)
Joe Goddard - Go Bananas
La Roux - I'm Not Your Toy (Jack Beats remix)
Tittsworth - Here He Comes feat Nina Sky & Pitbull (Rico Tubbs & Will Power bassline trance remix)
Rob Threezy - The Change Up (Jokers of the Scene remix)
Mustard Pimp - Cherry feat. Kali (Mustard Pimp dark remix)
The Prodigy - Warrior's Dance (Benga remix)
Deftones - Shove It! (Bar 9 remix)
Proxy - Raven (Evol Intent ravenstep VIP remix)
The XX - Infinity (Flufftronix dubstep)

A few more things about the mix though:
1) It was recorded in Traktor 3, before I conquered my phobia of Pro
2) It was recorded using an X-session Pro controller
3) I didn't have a dual output soundcard, so everything was going on in my headphones.

So please don't judge too harshly. I mostly put it up because it's not a terrible mix (at least for me), and the playlist is kind cool (at least it is for me).

I AM an amateur, and I am waiting on a new laptop along with Audio 2, so I can use my APC40 on Pro.

Not that it really matters (work with what you know, but...) but is there a reason you're going with VDJ vs Traktor or Serato (since you have access to tables)?

Either way, you're going to need some sort of controller to expand past the very basics as it's pretty hard to get mixing going without some sort of fader/dial setup connected to your computer. Do you have a budget in mind in terms of equipment?

i just found it randomly googling for djing software. if traktor or serato is superior i'll switch to that. in fact, i downloaded a demo of ableton suite yesterday.

are tables that important? i figured that with the right program + with hotkeys you could learn pretty much everything except maybe scratching. vdj has a crossfader and stuff like that. is that not good enough? please excuse my ignorance with this stuff.

Serato and Traktor are superior, heavily used by professional club DJs. Several clubs where I live have a Serato SL1 or SL3 box installed in their booth already, so DJs just have to show up with a laptop with Serato Scratch software and their music on it.

I actually use Serato in internal mode 100% of the time now, use the hotkeys, but you do need a mixer, and getting a cheap little USB device like a Korg or Akai trigger pad (check this Akai one out), you can assign a few of the functions to the pads & knobs.

If you were using hot keys to trigger cue points, loops, start points and pitch control/nudges, I would assign the pad's buttons to turning on/off effects and the knobs to control the parameter of the effects used.

Ok so clearly you don't have much of an idea of what a DJ actually even does. My suggestion? Actually go to shows and watch some DJs play in a genre of music you like, and then come back.

Also, there is a separate thread going to talk about DJ gear (software/hardware/etc) which may help you more than this thread which is strictly dedicated to posting mixes

Actually, go buy this book (it's really good). Read it, and *then* come back here with questions: http://www.amazon.com/How-DJ-Right-Science-Playing/dp/0802139957/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1279823604&sr=8-1

Ask me about my serfs!
I've been working on a pretty bizarre set, and I was wondering if this clunks entirely. I've done a fair amount of massaging to get everything continuous and pretty smooth, but it's the first proper set I've really compiled.

1. Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love
2. Yelle - Ce Jeu
3. Mariah Carey - Fantasy
4. Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait
5. Justice - Genesis
6. Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor
7. Chemical Brothers - Out of Control
8. Spandau Ballet - True
9. PM Dawn - Set Adrift on Memory Bliss
10. Lloyd ft. Lil' Wayne - You
11 & 12. Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster Stronger and La Roux - Bulletproof
13. Radiohead - Bulletproof (I Wish I Was)

It's not bad but it doesn't seem to have any particular direction. Genius of Love fits pretty well with the first three tracks but I would have just used it as a mashup over Ce Jeu or Fantasy rather than keeping it looping for three straight tracks. The tempo changes are fairly smooth but it's a bit too dramatic for my tastes. Track selection is generally ok, maybe a bit eclectic which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it doesn't seem consistent enough to justify it to me.

Basically my main criticism is it's all over the place without any particular direction, every few tracks has a dramatic energy change - it's like listening to a bunch of different mixes in different styles spliced together. It's possible to do it well but it's very difficult. I would focus on trying to keep a consistent but growing energy throughout your sets, maybe sticking to one genre if it makes things easier. There is potential here and I can see where your style is going but it'll take more practice to nail it.

Ok so clearly you don't have much of an idea of what a DJ actually even does. My suggestion? Actually go to shows and watch some DJs play in a genre of music you like, and then come back.

You're welcome. The book is really good, I highly recommend it even to experienced DJs
