Web Developer

The Sunlight Foundation uses cutting-edge technology and ideas to make government transparent and accountable. The Web Developer will be primarily responsible for building Django applications, including writing views that interface with the database layer, templating the HTML, and adding JavaScript interactivity. That said, most developers at Sunlight Labs are generalists, and above all else we’re looking for strong programmers.

Hey All--

Nick Grossman here from OpenPlans. We're an NYC-based nonprofit building technology to help cities & governments work better.

We have a potential upcoming project, doing a fairly high profile government-sponsored open data / transparency website (or websites). The scope of the project may fall outside of what we can do with our full-time staff, so I am looking for folks who would be interested in working on the project on a contractor basis. The details & scope are not yet finalized, but we would be looking for people who have experience & interest in the following areas:

* Implementing data repositories & APIs (ideally using open source tools, some of which are listed here: http://wiki.openmuni.org/Data_Platform)
* Designing and building civic data mashup sites, along the lines of http://govtrack.us and http://maplight.org
* Platform TBD, but most likely Django or Rails for the custom-designed application (not necessarily the data repo)

In terms of skills, we will most likely be looking to bring on 1-2 developers, 1-2 designers, and possibly 1 PM-type person (again, depending on how the scope shapes up). We would be particularly interested in working with small teams who have already worked together. The project would be on a short timeline (roughly six weeks for build & deploy, starting in early August), so the ability to focus significant effort during that time will be important.

If this sounds interesting to you (and apologies for being light on detail at this point), please send me an email, and include links to related websites or software projects that you've worked on (and/or your sunlightlabs / github / sortfolio / etc profile).

Many thanks!
Nick

Job-Seeker (will be) in Washington DC

I just got my M.A. in South Asian Cultures and Languages. I speak Hindi and Urdu and some Spanish. I'm pretty awesome at research and writing and I also have experience planning events for my department. I have also worked a wide variety of administrative jobs including: Receptionist at a Synagogue, admin assistant for the faculty search committee of a chemistry department, student worker in the accounting office of that same department, etc etc. I'm a spreadsheet and powerpoint master as well as a "self starter" and "team player" and all those other awesome things.

I'm arriving in DC towards the end of August and while I would prefer to get some sort of analyst position which would involve some translation work, I'm also open to an admin position to at least support myself while I'm getting settled in DC.

Any suggestions? I have PM, otherwise email me at elizannebow@gmail.com

p.s. I'm also open to positions in Minnesota, Texas, New York or Washington.

You can get a job with a 3 letter right now so long as you haven't gone on any cocaine fueled crime sprees in the near past. The fact that you speak Urdu, and can use Power Point qualifies you for intel analysis right away you just need the clearance now.

OUTREACH COORDINATOR, Media Laboratory-Center for Future Civic Media (C4FCM), to join a cross-disciplinary research center that is developing new technologies to support communities and foster civic journalism and political action. Will manage relationships and coordinate activities between the center and its community partners using web-based social networks and software as well as traditional communications tools. Responsibilities include serving as a liaison between center research staff and collaborators in partner communities by increasing knowledge and use of projects in partner communities and by the public and relaying feedback to development teams; coordinating field testing and deployment of center projects in partner communities; arranging demonstrations of center work for both internal and external sponsors and partners; identifying and creating opportunities for collaboration and mutual inspiration between the center and other innovators in the field of civic media; and handling other duties as requested.

REQUIREMENTS: a bachelor's degree; strong background in new media technologies and community-based initiatives; strong interpersonal and communication skills; at least two years of relevant experience working with nonprofit or community organizations, technology research, and new media initiatives; ability to work effectively with many types of people, ranging from university students to corporate sponsors to community activists; and an interest in and strong understanding of policy, social science, and technological issues. Recently, C4FCM sent out a job posting looking for a new outreach coordinator. As the current outreach coordinator, I'd like to share some insider secrets about how awesome working here is. (Spoiler: very!)

You would join a tight-knit crew of researchers and staff united around creating technology that can actually make a difference in struggling communities. But this isn't your average group of nerds: C4 researchers apply their considerable mettle to not just math and code, but also to thinking critically about the social contexts and implications of their technologies. The conversations here are friendly and full of laughs but also hard-hitting and honest. People aren't afraid to ask tough questions of their colleagues (and friends!) to help everyone's projects improve. There is a shared dedication to working closely and humbly with communities that is incredibly refreshing in a world full of problematic projects, and I can't imagine a better group of coworkers to have spent the last few years with. Beyond the core staff, the wider C4 community is an impressive assembly as well: some of the brightest and most insightful minds in the field sit on our email list and frequently attend our events and meetings.

As the Outreach Coordinator, your main responsibility would be to make sure that the wonderful work being done at the Center reaches those who would find it useful. This means traveling to conferences to present, identifying new groups to collaborate with, and developing outreach strategies with C4 researchers.

You'll get all the perks that come with the Center's Media Lab location: beautiful spaces to work in, an atmosphere brimming with creativity, roving robots, your very own inflatable elephant, ping pong, and, my favorite, the Media Lab Free Food Camera.

As for me, I'm moving on after 3 years of being affiliated with the Center to learn about other perspectives in the tech for good field. I've learned an incredible amount in my time at the Center about the technical and operational needs of communities and nonprofits, and I'm taking that knowledge to help grow Breadpig, a wacky little company started by my friend Alexis that seeks to collect resources (profit + tech savvy) and give them to great nonprofits that need them. It'll be an interesting change of pace, but I certainly plan on staying a close friend of the Center.

If you are looking for a fun job with great coworkers where you can make a difference at the intersection of technology and social impact, and if you're awesome, I highly recommend you apply for my job. I'll miss it a lot.

If I didn't like my current job - and feel obligated to stay, since I haven't even finished out my first year yet - I would jump all over this.

No one told you what a crazy world logistics is? As much as I love it, mostly because you are really making sure production happens...it's a hosed up industry. It's always shifting because of the costs of running the company. If you make a million dollar profit on total sales of 100 million, consider it a good year. The massively retarded speed-limiters that are causing havoc on roads due to multiple jurisdictions. Let's not even get started on Just-In-Time delivery which will bankrupt the industry if gas prices rise again. It still hasn't recovered from the last time it happened. When people talk about Wal-mart and Co being crush, it will happen during the next major drivers strike.

I could go on and on about the industry as a whole. It's very high stress, you will become a road warrior if you want to rise in the industry. Learn everyone name, don't hang out with the exec, hang out with the drivers and warehouse staff. It will save you problems in the future. Also side with the drivers of the dockhands, unless you work for one of the companies that hire new driver. Then you can treat them like poo poo, as no matter what they are going to bail on you once they can get insurance to work for a good company.
