Has anyone ever used a Sylfex Auxmod? MY WIFE just got an '03 6 2.3 and from everything I've read the adapter Crutchfield sells that lets you mount a single DIN headunit is a glorified piece of poo poo that costs $150, and all I really need to add is a line in to the stock stereo.

I have one, it works great for me. Easy to install. I didn't do the actual cable very elegantly though, I just have it hanging in the passenger footwell.

I went with the dirt cheap clearance Hankook RS2s, but I won't be getting the RS3s because the noise gets old after a while. I know two people with the V12s, one on an 07 Civic Si and the other on an RX8, and both love them.

The General Exclaim UHP's are some of the best tires for the money. Excellent dry handling. Absolutely amazing wet performance and hydroplaning resistance.

I hate the RE050A's especially in the rain. Lost track of how many times they've made me hydroplane.

Love my Ventus V12 Evo's. Have had them since August '09 and after putting around 25k miles on them, I'm probably gonna need new tires by this coming December/January. Might even switch to 235/40/18 or 225/40/18 as more options open up and prices are better. I've also read good things about Dunlop Direzza Star Specs and Sumitomo HTRZ II's. I doubt you'd spend more than $475-$500 for a set of these.

The ridiculous thing about the RE050As is how much they still cost, when the RS2 will last longer, grip better in all conditions, and just plain kick its rear end everywhere but noise.

Yeah I've heard that running 225/235 rather than 215 feels nicer. You're on stock wheels too right? Wallet can't quite handle a new set of wheels so yeah...

Are the RS2's still being clearanced or did I miss the boat?

I read more about those UHP's and they seem good. Roughly the same price as my tires (per tire) and it has better treadwear. The decision would come down to whichever manufacturer offers a rebate/incentive when it comes time for me to make the purchase.

This is pretty much the truth with any OE tire. The vast majority are dogshit. Perfect example, the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4. OE on everything from Acuras to Volkswagens and vastly inferior to most All seasons at half the cost. I'm convinced that the tire manufactures make these awful tires and sell them to the manufacturers at appropriately dirt cheap prices in volume, then sell them for incredibly inflated prices are retail. The idea is that most consumers are completely uneducated when it comes to tires and will either buy the cheapest poo poo they can find or buy what was originally on the car.

I've pretty much never been satisfied with OE tires. Just looking at the tire rankings on Tire Rack give you a good indication that a tire's price has very little connection to how well it performs.

Do you guys know of more recent comparison tests?

RX-8 wheels will fit an MS3? I came from an RX-8 to an MS3, and I still have my RX-8 spare tire sitting in my garage, waiting to be thrown out. I never thought to check if it was the same size.

RX8 and MS6 wheels on the MS3 are pretty commonly done. They look all right.
http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f379/graphite-rx-8s-25932/

I do like the wheels that come on the R3 package for the RX8 though. The wheels do look a little similar to the MS3 gen2's but note how these have the rotary shape.
http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/editors_notebook/1004_2010_mazda_rx8_r3/index.html

And whenever I save up some cash, I'd try and pick up Enkei PF-01's. They look great on the darker colored MS3's.

I was getting some significant noise if I had my Evo plugged into both the charger and the aux. Picked up a PAC ground loop isolator that just plugs into the 3.5mm jack directly for about $12 on eBay and it works great.

I'll agree they're essentialy the same rotary-ish design (I had the 2010 MZ3 wheels as a mental image, whoops) but there's some subtle differences besides color and size. The R3 ones are also forged, so they come with a $1200+ price tag.

I bought my speed3 used and they had put some Pirelli PZero Nero All Seasons on there. Pretty good tire all considered, I really want some of the Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec but I hear the tread life is incredibly poor.

They are so stupidly expensive, I don't know why Mazda used them. Every single tire that was on my list of replacements was cheaper including the RE-11 (215/45). The tires I went with feel better in just about every category except noise as well, while being ~$60 cheaper per corner. Crazy.

Where are you seeing RE-11s cheaper? Tire rack has RE050As at $218 and RE11s at $243 - that's $25 more per tire. :pseudo:

You're correct about the tread life on the Star Spec's. One guy had them on his Speed3 and I loved the way they felt, but they wore down real quick. We drive each other's cars all the time and we have "special areas" where we can get aggressive on the driving. I would say I felt the most confident with the MS3 on those tires, the car handled like a dream with them. The HTR-Z II's came in second, followed by my tires (due to the soft sidewall). A big reasonw why I love the V12's is because I haven't found another tire that handles as well as they do in wet conditions, and that really helps during the rainy months in Texas.

All in all, if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't buy the best that money could buy. I think having tires that perform to your standards doesn't necessarily mean you should splurge, especially if it's for a daily driver where you won't always expect full performance (...unless you drive that way).

Sublime Process posted:

In my opinion, the soft sidewall becomes a legitimate concern if you are either tracking/auto-x'ing the car or you push the car hard constantly. I run mine at around 35-38 PSI, and yes, it does help a little bit.

Yes, indeed, many people are. Cobb recommends they be installed, and on many Mazda forums there are (or were at one time) large group-buys.

I got one from http://www.saikoumichi.com/ but I'm such a lazy sack of crap I haven't gotten around to installing it. The nice thing I found about SM was that I was given the group price even though I bought mine a while after everyone else, simply because I mentioned in the order email that it was for a Mazdaspeed6.

I've seen posts from a few people showing their cans quickly collected a whole lot of crap, and the photos were pretty gross.

When I got mine they weren't linking to a kit, but now that I know they exist I might pick up the kit-minus-can package, since gathering up those pieces is what kept me putting off installing the thing in the first place.

So I've been getting sporadic CELs over the past year, always due to the same issue - the computer thinks the throttle plate isn't actually at idle, and goes into limphome. Every time it happens, it's on a cooler morning, and the car is run for a short time (not long enough to get up to temp) and shut off, such as to fill up at the gas station across the street from my neighborhood.

Supposedly it can be caused by carbon buildup, and there was a Mazda TSB on the topic, so I finally got around to cleaning it today. Not too bad of a job except for the factory arrangement of the hose clamp on the throttle body itself - almost impossible to get to it from up top, when if they had rotated the clamp 180* it would have been easy.

However, I noticed that while it definitely had some grime, for the most part it was clean. Nothing I'd call excessive carbon buildup, but hey. The thing that worries me about it is the way the throttle plate itself felt, or more accurately, the action - it seemed like it was far more difficult to move and a bit notchier than any other throttle body I've had in my hands. To be fair, though, none of those other TBs were drive-by-wire, they were all cable operated. Is this normal or am I going to need to replace the TB to get the CELs gone for good?

Also, I mangled one of the bolt holes in the intercooler for the cover. gently caress. :argh:

Are you still under warranty? Get to a dealer with it.

Their first step is going to be changing the oil for 5w40 or 10w40, and if that fixes it, you're done - you just get to run w40 oils forever. If not, they'll put a new turbo in.
