Thanks dude. I'm not sure how lit critty any of my senior thesis will be, but I am intrigued by that. Have you ever seen any of Burrow's 'Cutups'? He was essentially doing what you're describing, but with famous books instead of music in the public domain (actually, I'm not sure if all of 24 Hours was in the public domain, but I'm pretty sure that most of Since I Left You is. Also, Aus copyright law is wonky and I don't understand it, so maybe they have a more all-encompassing public domain).

Maybe I'm a simpleton, but this new GT album will certainly end up being blasted out of my car for the next couple weeks. Well, it will be played in between podcasts from NPR. In my subaru. As I commute from my suburban home to my government job. It's me, I'm the whitest person...

edit: I do wish it had a bit more of the weird glitchiness that made NR so awesome, but I also like the longer sample and generally laid back poppy sound. And yeah, I know those two ideas contradict.

WE WERE ALL UP IN THAT SHIT LIKE A MUTHAFUCKA. IT'S CLEANER THAN A BROKE DICK DOG.

All Day, like the live show I saw in October, has lost the magic and energy that was present in Night Ripper and the shows he did in 06/07 with Dan Deacon. I might throw it on at a party or something but I don't really see myself listening to this nearly as much as I did Night Ripper or FTA.

I'm really glad All Day was free, because I think it's fantastically mediocre if not bordering on outright bad. There is nothing on this album that stands out. Everything sounds the same. Almost every song he picked is very very similar, so it doesn't feel like anything new pops out at you. He doesn't balance the bad music with the good music like he did so well on his last two albums. There's nothing close to a "holy poo poo this guy is amazing" moment like Flashing Lights + No Diggity on FTA

Fun Shoe
Basically it can be summed up in him giving Bizarre Love Triangle and Liquid Swords like 15 seconds each and Ke$ha gets like a minute.

E: It's merely one problem anyway. If he threw more music I listen to in my spare time on here it still wouldn't be that much better.

The only Ke$ha sample was a couple seconds of vocal one-shots and Bizarre Love Triangle got over a full minute, though? What else are you calling bad music?

I think you can identify weaknesses in the album, to be sure, but to say that, as a criticism, he used sample X too little and sample Y too much, where X corresponds to my musical tastes is, uh, ridic.

I glossed over your edit. My bad.

I won't care for any of it if he does. It was terribly generic. His mashup is among some of the best out there, on the other hand. It'd be a huge loss if he went that way.

Yeah, the only thing that has stopped me from listening to it over and over has been the fact that I got Kanye's new album right when I got All Day.

There are definitely more lulls than there were in NR or FTA, which is a weakness, but there also exists more potential to build to something great or really enjoy a great match than in previous albums. At times in NR or FTA, something would be brilliant, but all too fleeting.

I read an interview with him where he said that yeah, he threw that in like, Saturday night or something like that.

Also, I'm echoing the sentiments of everyone else - Night Ripper was magic because it was fresh and new and different, FTA was great as well, but now theres just so many mashup artists out there that the new album is good, and solid, but I'm not floored anymore. His live shows are still one gigantic party though, which is always appreciated.

One thing I don't agree with, is everyone saying how great the ending is - I like the sorta epicness of Imagine, but it just seems so SLOW compared to the great sample from Faithfully on FTA.

So have always kinda thought that mashups CAN be a decent way of rejuvenating a has-been track, and splicing it with another similar sounding track, to the benefit of both tracks. However, there are ridiculous amounts of AWFUL homemade and so-called professional mashups on the web, I kinda wondered as to people's opinions on said 'technique' in terms of enjoyment and/or if they have any decent ones they swear by, orrr any they absolutely hate?

I quite liked the Bob Sinclair/Craig David - World Hold On For Hot Stuff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP1NKh7Kpyg) - not entirely sure whether this was official or not?

And there was also: Britney/Linkin Park - Toxic/Faint (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTB35xttygQ)

Have checked and re-checked the rules, so am hoping this (as my premier post) doesn't break an inordinate amount of rules before I even get going?
