Does anyone else have a clunky trans? I'd say mine clunks about 60% of the time on upshifts when engaging the clutch (releasing the pedal). It doesn't happen much if at all on downshifts which I tend to rev match.

Then scrape.
Any other MS6 owners here have experience with replacing the shocks on your car? My rear ones are blown and need replacing ASAP. The car feels all floaty and some bumps it just can't even handle without squirming all over the place.

Also, do you think that its possible for blown rear shocks to cause undue weight being transferred to the front suspension? Does that even make any sense? For some reason my front tires always have slight bulge at a stand-still even with 35 psi which I know is normal. The rear tires look perfect and have the same psi as the front.

The car's alignment is also slightly off and pulls to the right even though the dealership shop says it is perfect on their machine. Not sure if that matters.

If you're talking about the actual body piece, the bumper cover, U don't believe so. There are two components, the tetured plastic piece where the license plate bolts into and the actual body colored bumper cover itself. You can buy it as an assembly or individual pieces.

Welp, got my answer today. Throttle body is clean as a whistle and I got the same limp-home condition. I need to pull the code still to make sure it's not something unrelated this time but it looks like I'm in the market for a new TB.

Got my Hankooks put on yesterday, along with an alignment (just in case) and put nitrogen in the tires.

So far they seem pretty good compared to the stock Potenza's. I'm apparently one of the few that actually didn't mind them, so now that I have the Hankooks on the car feels a little quicker(?) on turns. It definitely feels better going over bumps, but that could just be cause the Bridgestones were just old.

It's funny to have traction back though; but now I just have wheel hop instead of spinning my tires. :rice:

Yea I've heard good things about the TRZ, CP-E and the damned street unit mount. Albeit, I've also heard of the latter two failing and I'm not a CP-E fanboy so I was leaning more towards the SU mount.

Any inputs on this? I want the new mount to be as close to stock feel as possible, I'm not a race driver, I don't track the car. I just drive like a jackass from time to time.

Who will win the greatest battle of them all?

I have the 80 durometer AWR rear motor mount and when you first install it, you'll notice vibrations at idle, but they will eventually go away. Once they do, to me, it feels like stock. It made quite a noticeable difference for smoothing out shifts from first to second.

Literally Lewis Hamilton
Feb 22, 2005

The poly TRZ motor mount will give you some slight vibrations, but god drat is that thing a total hoss. You'll only really feel the vibes if you are trying to accelerate in a high gear at low rpms (we're talking 6th gear at 2k rpm) I don't think I've ever seen a post about someone breaking it. Tighten it down to 80 ft/lb with a torque wrench and some locktite and you're solid.

That said, any motor mount (CP-E, SU, TRZ, etc) are miles better than the stock motor mount. You'll eliminate wheel hop and won't ever miss a first to second shift.

Full of ignorant tribalism. Kinda sad.
I keep forgetting to post about the tires I got. I managed to get 40k out of the stock RE050's. Baffles the poo poo out of me reading about guys getting 10k or less out of them because I don't drive gently. Didn't have any hydroplaning problems here in the rainy NW, but the road noise was atrocious and I was at the wear bars.
I went to Discount Tire because I hate Les Schwab with a firey passion and Costco only carries Michelin and wanted around 250 bucks a corner for the RE050s. I've always had good luck with Discount anyway. I was originally going to get a set of Falken Zeix, but one look at the tread design and it was pretty clear that it wasn't suitable for rainy weather. His recommendation was the Goodyear Eagle GT. He started going on about the fact that it has a rainy zone and a snowy zone and a dry one and I was like "Yeah, it's a sports car tire. I have a truck to drive in the snow". Anyway, with all 4 tires (had to bump up to 225/40), mounted and balanced, TPMS rebuild and insurance it was a bit over $800.00.
They're awesome. Fairly quiet, hold the road as well as the 050s and are less harsh. They stick the glue in the rain. Really impressive. We had a bit of snow and they did really well. Didn't have to chain up despite hills and whatnot. Highly recommended.

Interesting. Wix seems to have changed their MS3 oil filter slightly. Just ordered a box of 10 from rockauto and got a mix of two box designs. The new ones are all the same filter design but some of the old ones are different - the newer one is a good bit wider, and a bit shorter, with rubber gaskets on the end caps (where the oem filters have felt). The older ones are longer, narrower, and have no gasket at all.

Hey high mileage RE050 buddy :hfive: I got just around 29k outta my stock RE050s and I thought there were fairly decent - I never hydroplaned or anything.

They had a good feel to the car. Worth the $215 that tirerack wants each? Nah. I got the Hankook V12s for almost half the cost. :downs:

So it seems like a good amount of the members replying in this thread are MS3 owners over MS6 owners.

I am posting because my '05 6S GT is getting a little long in tooth. I have 133K Miles on it, and while everything is in pretty good working order, it is in need of some more involved maintenance soon, shocks, etc. I am not really upside down on the car, so getting out of it won't be too painful. We just paid off my wife's car as well ('05 6i) and I am seriously considering getting a MS6. My wife is sold on the idea of a new car, and will entertain the thought of yet another Mazda. The AWD will be welcomed in the Salt Lake snow we have here. I have done a little bit of research, but it is hard to sift through the majority of the drivel on typical Mazda forums.
What I have seen locally, private seller MS6's that *appear* to be clean cars (non-modded, clean pictures etc) are going for ~$15K, and have ~50Kish miles. I refuse to buy a car with pretty much any modification since it is a near guarantee it has been pounded on. Is the GT a better choice over the Sport trim? What should I look for mechanically? I know about letting it idle for a bit, and then going to see if it smokes, and have heard things about the rear diff mount having issues with people that do hard launches on the cars. Thanks goons! :)

I can't answer all your questions, but I can advise this. Look for someone that is fanatical (almost obsessive) about maintaining their car. My car is modified (lightly - just an SRI) but I'm far from beating my car. If anything, I drive it fairly light.

Then again, if the car was fully bolted...Walk off. v:downs:v

You're going to want to let it idle for more than "a bit" - I think the TSB test is either 10 minutes or 20 minutes.

I do agree I would only be wary of mods based on the type of mods. eBay exhaust and intake? Run away. Proper cold-air intake and a catch can? Probably a good one to look at.

Well, the hunt is on for my Speed6. My wife has agreed to the proposition a lot easier than I anticipated. Last night I went to one of the local dealerships that was closer to my work, instead of the one we stopped by at on Saturday. It is far and away much better, the first one was a bunch of rear end-hats. They only had one in inventory with too high of miles, but another non-Mazda dealership has one that they could get.
I spelled out my situation, saying that I want to trade in my car for no less than what I owe, and that I want a non-modded MS6 with less than 30K miles and that I would pay no more than 14,500 for. They said "We can make that happen". The guys there were real quality, so I will probably stick with them. They called me today and said the MS6 at the other dealership had someone that was interested in it and was test driving it late tonight and I would know today whether or not they could get it for me. I am hoping that whoever is test driving it doesn't take it. Here is the ad for the car I am hoping doesn't get sold: http://www.rcautomotive.com/detail-2006-mazda-mazdaspeed6-sport-used-6477527.html

That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth.
Okay so I discovered a couple things about my MS3 (probably related):

1) The audio jack in the console doesn't work
2) The lighter socket in the console doesn't work
3) There is speaker wire/large gauge wire under the rear driver side seat (it was cut)...

Anyhow, I pulled up the cover in the trunk and noticed that the styrofoam spacer was cut in half or something and there was a space that looked oddly appropriate for an amp.

So...what's the best course to confirm what I already have is working correctly, reverting anything I can, and getting rid of anything that shouldn't be? I have some ideas, but I'd love to hear some responses.

(also may need a new spacer in the trunk)

:(

Considering a MazdaSpeed3 but am having a tough time giving up my Subie's AWD (even though I live in San Diego).

I'd have to do black exterior to hide the smile but the biggest problem for me are the seats. Awful polka dots with no options.

I went the other direction. It's nice having gobs of traction but at the same time you miss the completely raw nature of the car. And, the MZR is about 6000000000x the engine the EJ25 is. Torque like a diesel and since it's turbo, the minuscule redline isn't much of an issue.

The stockers lasted less than 15,000. I had RE760s put on in March, they are now own to the tread bar and completely worn out in the front. I do not dump the clutch, I do not race or autocross, I drive normally.

Are you good about checking alignment and doing tire rotations?

People tell me I made the stockers last a while as I had to replace the tires after 1 year of ownership (around 20k miles). Your use sounds about closer to average.

If it makes you feel better most the MS3 owners I know got 12k or lower on then.

I just put new shoes on my MS3 last night. This, after noticing after I got to work on Monday that my RS2s had started showing cord :downs:

I went with the Kumho Ecsta LE - not a whole lot of info out there but they look to be going after the same market as the Hankook V12, and there's a $100 Visa GC offer with them from Tire Rack so far.

The weather has been brutally cold and wet lately but already I can tell they are, if nothing else, much quieter than the RS2s.

For the record, that's one year and one day after I installed the RS2s (or 364 days if you count when I corded them, ha) - and 29,000 miles. gently caress I drive this thing a lot. Oh, and if I had rotated the tires at all I probably could've snuck another 5-10k out of them.
