I really like this bike. Its a really minimalistic way to completely change the function of a bike. It looks like the frame is completely untouched, a really simple sub-frame, and exhaust, some clip-ons, a tank and its a totally different bike. Makes me want to go out and build one.

I didn't like the others, they were all too flat.
I'm skeptical about their claims to negotiate because the Street Triple R is moving off the showrooms pretty quickly, and they *just* got the 2011 bikes in. Basically, they have no reason to give you a special deal, since someone will come along in a week and pay MSRP.
I just went through this when I bought my Stripler last month. FWIW, I paid $8500 + freight/setup for their last 2010 model which was also a demo and had 65 miles on it.

wilkenm posted:

From what I've read, the freight and setup fees are kind of BS, and there's around a 15% difference between invoice and MSRP. And obviously, sales tax and other state and DMV fees are fixed. So, my dilemma is what exactly constitutes a 'fair' price for the bike.
The dealer has to pay freight, and they're going to pass that on to you. I've never heard of it being negotiable. Set-up is the time their mechs spend assembling and prepping the bike. Sometimes you can get that waived as part of the deal, but usually not. "Administrative fees" and the like can often be negotiated, but that's pure profit, and they don't want to let it go easily.

quote:

My current thought is something like $9000 + tax/title/reg seems fair. Is that way out of line, either too high or low? If it matters, I'm buying outright, not financing (unless there's a reason to finance?).
It's a fair offer, but I honestly wouldn't expect them to budge. If it was a lingering 2010 model, you'd have a much better chance at that price.

quote:

And, while I'm asking, is it realistic to ask for accessories at cost as part of the purchase?
It's absolutely realistic to ask, and this is probably the only place where you'll have some luck. If the parts are already on the bike, you can probably talk them into just throwing them in, at least at cost. You *might* be able to talk them into a hundred bucks or so of safety gear, I had luck with that the first time I bought a new bike.

I didn't get the impression that they were moving bikes all the quickly, even the Stripler. There weren't any 2010's left, but they had 3 2011's, and from looking at their ads on Craigslist, I *think* 2 of them have been sitting around for a couple months. The salesman didn't even mention putting down a deposit to hold a bike. Of course, that could mean they're moving so fast he doesn't care if I come back.

Anyway, it's reassuring to hear I'm not completely off the mark on my offer, and thanks for correcting my understanding of the freight charges. Unless the Aprilia Shiver 750 ends up fitting me better, I'll be back next week to report on the buying process.

I've bought cars under similar circumstances (Mini Cooper S was flying off the floors at the time). The negotiation process was basically a sliding scale between vehicle price, trade-in, or financing rate that all ended up with the dealer getting about the same amount in the end.

I've only bought motorcycles outright without trade-in, and only the used 2005 Warrior from the Harley dealer had any haggling room. Not saying you won't get a good deal, and good luck to you, I'm still pessimistic. Maybe it's just the area I live in.

FWIW, there's a motorcycle.com review between several of the 2011 naked middleweights, and the Shiver and Stripler are both in it. http://www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/2011-naked-middleweights-shootout-90414.html

Easiest and cheapest solution might be one of those O'Neil bluetooth helmets with everything you need built in, including a radio.

I thought about getting one, but it didn't fit my head comfortably. Also I'm kind of wary of a $300 helmet with $200 worth of electronics built in.

I spoke to a Ducati specialist, and he asked me if I can hear the fuel pump kicking on (which its supposed to do once you turn the key) and I realized that I don't.

A google search for 2005 Monster fuel pump shows there was a recall of the fuel pump but my vin falls out of the range of vins that are affected by the recall.

Thinking of taking it in to the shop to get raped now, because I can't even find a replacement fuel pump anywhere on the internet.

After failing to find a reasonable replacement for the costly OEM Ducati EFI fuel pump, we commissioned these pumps to be made for us! Also compatible with all "metal tank" Monsters and SSie models (the OEM pump has shorter length but is not a problem because the pump is clamped along the body). Standard pump designed for use at 3.5 bar (Ducati spec), while HP pump is 4.5 bar for use on racing engines with modified pressure valves. Dealer inquiries welcome. Thanks, but I found out what it is.

I read on the Monster forum that many people had been complaining about fuel pumps, and several had fixed their problem by finding a loose wire.

This made me remember that I ran the bike out of gas a few months ago because my low gas light failed to come on. So I thought, "hell its probably a loose wire."

I traced the wiring from the fuel tank to the pump and just wiggled the wiring, and unplugged and replugged what I could. I also took out, inspected and put back the injection fuse.

Fucker started right up. Now I know this is a temporary fix, but I think all I have to do is get a Clymers guide or equivalent and check all the fuel system wiring.

Are Yuasa batteries worth the expense over cheapo batteries plus ones for an SV650? I lost a very old, weak battery in the cold weather we've had lately. It was a cheapo "Batteries Plus" one of indeterminate age that the PO put in, seems to cost less than half as much as a Yuasa. I'm tempted to cheap out here.

Also my R/R may or may not be hastening batteries demise, so if I get a cheapo one from a batteries plus I could do a warranty swap if it dies.

Put it on your rear fender or on the license plate? If it's that big a deal you can just use goo gone to get it off. Lots of people place them on their swingarm too. Doesn't matter where you put it, if you get a ticket you can just take a pic of it and they'll dismiss it i'm sure.

Anything of the appropriate weight is fine for street use. Half of them don't actually have the viscosity they claim anyways.

Anything that has the right viscosity, pressure and temperature requirements and is compatible with your forks materials (metals/seals/gaskets) will do.

However do not mix silicon based fluids with dino-liquids. Generally flush, tear down and clean your fork before changing to another fork fluid.

As a result of my perverted preference for French poo poo-cars, I have an uncountable stock of unopened LHM hydraulics cans around, and that's what my forks get after a tear-down. Works amazingly.

Edit: I hope you're not asking about this, because you need to "top up". A fork is a fill-and-forget system. Much like brakes: if you're loosing level, something is wrong. Glorious rebuild-time ahead.

Handling-wise, would it be of any benefit for a bike to have the front wheel be powered? I guess it'd have to be a system that does more than merely drive the front and rear wheels at the same speed at all times.

What do you all think of full coverage vs liability for bikes? I have an SV and it costs me 80$ a month for full coverage with uninsured motorist etc, but the deductible is $1000 and honestly Im starting to wonder about the worth. I've already dropped it once and done < 1000$ damage to it, so unless I completely write the thing off I'm not going to really ever claim it (the bike is worth about 3k) and if I write it off completely then I figure I wont really care about the bike cause chances are I'll be hospitalized for a while anyway..

Part of the reason I'm asking is cause I'm torn 50/50 between a VFR 800 or similar sports tourer (which is cheaper for full coverage than my SV???) and a CBR/GSXR/ninja 600 SS bike cause they just look so insanely fun. Problem is if I get full coverage on a 600 my insurance will go up 200+%, so tempted to just get liability on a ~4-5k bike but it just doesn't sit quite right with me for some reason..

I read an article about an AWD off-road bike. It didn't really handle much differently most of the time, but it did help during low traction situations and hill climbs.

Not sure mow much benefit it's be on a road bike. Any advantage would probably be negated by the added weight.

For some reason my bike appears to be leaking coolant out of the overflow hose. It only happens when I start it up in the morning, and it is warming up with the choke on. Once I cut the choke and take off, it doesn't leak anymore. At first I thought that perhaps it had been overfilled and was just puking out some excess coolant, but I pulled the radiator cap off today and its not like level is even at the top of the filler neck. (In fact I cant see the coolant level, I will get some tomorrow and fill it up.)

Any ideas whats up?
