Report: Ex-minister says Gadhafi ordered Lockerbie
STOCKHOLM -- Swedish tabloid Expressen says Libya's recently resigned justice minister claims Moammar Gadhafi personally ordered the Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people in 1988.

Expressen quotes Mustafa Abdel-Jalil as telling their correspondent in Libya that "I have proof that Gadhafi gave the order about Lockerbie." The comments were translated from Arabic to Swedish.

Abdel-Jalil stepped down as justice minister to protest the violence against anti-government demonstrations.
If this is true then Gaddafi might as well shot himself now.

I doubt it, the only thing we had to do with the actual bombing was that it happened in our airspace, so I'd be surprised if it implicates anyone in Scotland over the bombing itself.

As to the release of the bomber, cables revealed that the British government and BP basically gave Libya a load of legal advice on how best to convince us to release him on compassionate grounds, apparently without our knowledge. It would be interesting, certainly, if it turned out the Justice Minister had been involved in some conspiracy to effect his release, but personally I'm not conviced the Scottish Government was in on any deception.

It sounds like the East of half of Libya is pretty much under the control of the protesters, with army units joining the protesters, and the border with Egypt under the control of the protesters.

The residents of Tripoli are under seige as mercenaries kill anything that moves.

Most cities in the west have rebelled, or are in the process of rebelling, with army units defecting all over the place. Outside of the towns and cities Gaddafi controls many roads, making movement between the cities impossible.

The western border only has one crossing controlled by the protesters, every other one is controlled by Gaddafi supporters.

I've posted loads of info on the last two pages, including a couple of useful maps.

A National Libyan Airline plane is circling the airspace off the coast of Malta, Al Jazeera's Cal Perry reports from Valletta. "The plane is saying they are running out of fuel and need to land .. they are negotiating with the runway about landing," Perry says.

In a situation like this that seems like a needlessly cruel thing to do. At worst, the plane could have been filled with defectors who, now more or less outed as such, have to return to an airstrip controlled by a regime that has killed hundreds of conscientious objectors in the past few days.

I like to think of it like this, the Revolution DEFCON:

Annihilated (Revolution successful): Egypt
Defcon 1 (No turning back): Libya, Tunisia
Defcon 2 (In revolt): Bahrain, Yemen
Defcon 3 (potential for revolt): Algeria
Defcon 4 (low chance of revolt): Iran, Iraq
Defcon 5 (extremely low chance of revolt): Saudi Arabia, China etc.

I'm sure I've missed a few countries.

I don't think that is why they were turned back. Considering Gaddafi's past ties to state-sponsored terrorism they were probably worried about the plane being used to retaliate against them for their acceptance of defectors. It is awful, and I hope that the plane makes it to safety elsewhere.

To be fair there are easier ways to deal with that situation. Give it a military jet escort that will fire if they change course. Tell them to land and then remain inside the plane, then send in military personnel to check it all out. Easy enough. Turning back a commercial plane low on fuel is pretty ridiculous.

vvvv then take them into custody and let the UN decide. What a wasted opportunity.

If they are short on fuel they don't have many other options, Libya is about 200 miles away, and that leaves them with Italy or various revolutionary arab countries.

I really doubt this is true, it doesn't seem in line with MB behaviour.

Also, it wouldn't really matter what they want. Western sources like to portray them as the mastermind and lords of the revolution but there role was relatively small overall.
