Series of photos from the earthquake in NZ: http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2011/02/new-zealand-earthquake-search-rescue-and-repair/100016/ #8 blew my mind. I've seen hundreds of earthquake devastation photos with huge cracks in the ground and buildings falling in on themselves over the years, perhaps to the point it's barely interesting anymore. But seeing railroad tracks kinked like that makes me Googling the guy that took it (Marty Melville) suggests he loves trains: http://www.railpictures.net/showphotos.php?userid=35842

Time for something unconventional. We saw a lot of autobiographical photographers in class today, but one made a huge impression on me. Richard Billingham's documents his family in Ray's A Laugh. His father is an alcoholic, his mother addicted to cigarettes and keeps tons of pets and his brother is a substance abuser. Originally meant to be used as material for his paintings, Billingham didn't care much for the photographic quality of his pictures. Using a simple 35mm camera, using the cheapest stores for developing, the series has a rather 'family snapshot' feeling to it. The pictures feel like they could fit in a family album if it weren't for the content. To me, it feels like a tragicomedy at times. We see the impoverish conditions in which they live and how they try to escape it. Meanwhile, we can see the affection in the family as well as the fights.

I had a chance to shoot in the same spot at photo#4 a few weeks ago. It's a rather hard shot to get even lighting due to the path of the sun and the orientation of those buildings. I really like the work this guy has done with West Texas landscapes. It feels like such a barren place, but in the past few weeks I've been out there, I've found a number of scenes that I really wanted to capture.

I don't know jack poo poo about wedding photography but I'm pretty sure that puts him in different circles that most people don't have easy access to. I'm guessing that people who spend $5000-$10,000 on a wedding photographer have a modicum of taste and aren't popping over to the strip mall church to get hitched in front of a bunch of dour coworkers and relatives who are strangers. Not to detract from his stuff in any way, I think it's great. I imagine he's selective about what he does or at least shows. I admire his level of access that his skill and price demands.

I don't think this has been posted here yet. Saw some of these shots in TFR, since a few are of a "bonnie and clyde" kind of scene. If you like the polaroid vintage style, you'll like this. Neil Krug and model Joni Harbeck. http://pulpartbook.com/ Slight :NSFW: for some of the pictures.

I think most of it is the film. Some of it is really out there though, so I wonder as well what the post was. In some reading about the shoots, Krug said they shot mostly straight film, but some was digital then processed. I think some of the series where she is standing like 8 places in a cave are the digital shots.
