And now for something completely different... I picked up an SL3 over the weekend, so here's the last 2 hours of my set from Saturday night. Top 40/party/singalong stuff...nothing too hood. This gig isn't the place for that. I got kind of drunk towards the end so there might be a trainwreck or two. quote:2:16:51 Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me http://www.mediafire.com/?7rnrzay4fxip0wu

So I finally got into DJing - again, I guess... Anyway here's 'babby's first set'; pretty much all electro house with one or two out of left field. There are still some obvious gently caress-ups that I need to fix in another pass. Criticize away!!! http://soundcloud.com/zscenturion/beating-a-deadhor5e-take-2

I made a 'mixtape' sort of set, consisting of little fragments of things I have lying around, and some music mixed together with some of my own beats, etc-- I did this in ableton, with quite a bit of it 'performed' on Elektron's octatrack, which I also used to process the vinyl parts of things, and so on. Here's a tracklist which goes over the major sounds and songs: Beats with Harmony Korine "Three Little Devils"/ Terry Riley "Poppy Nogood" / Coil "In Memory of the Truth"/ Some Orchestra I Forget the Name of "Don't Think Twice, It's Allright" Hashim "Al-Naafiysh"/ Gescom "KeyNell 3" Frank Sinatra "What Time Does the Next Miracle Leave"/ Indian Raga record/ Beats Toaster "Only on Warm, Human Fliesh" FSOL "Papua New Guniea"/ Dinner with Jesus Amen Break/ Beats/ Bass/ etc. Tony Scott "To Drift Like Clouds" Monolake "Perpetuum"/ Pole "Achterbahn"/ Paul Schutze "The Ghosts of Animals" Dj Krush "Kemuri" 'R2D2 Beats' / Bach 'Air on A G String'/ Tomita "A Spaceship Lands Emitting Slivery Light"/ Cuticle Scrapes BOSE "Bass Overdrive"/Kraftwerk "The Model" Bill Mannville/ Dusty Fingers breaks http://soundcloud.com/toaster-1/an-entire-lifetime-wasted-in Wonder Bread fucked around with this message at 06:21 on Feb 28, 2011 |

Here is a mix I recorded with my friend. It starts off as darker tech-house and moves into progressive house. We tried to keep a constant groove throughout and used deep basslines. I mostly play tech house and he mostly plays progressive so we tried to tie our genres in together and create a progression. So I made a couple more rough mixes and I'm looking for some feedback. The first one is mostly UK Dubstep. http://soundcloud.com/zscenturion/hopping-across-the-pond-mostly The second is some Drum & Bass but mostly heavy 'Brostep'; I made it sort of as a challenge to myself to mix Reso's Technetium as it carries the big tempo change and has a pretty challenging rhythm, I think. http://soundcloud.com/zscenturion/broammar-gaddafi-dubstep-d-b EDIT: Oh yeah, this one also has these loving pops & clicks at the end that I have to figure out. lovely buzz for now. I made a triphop mix a couple years ago. Never thought to share it with you all here until now. Enjoy! This mix was originally designed to be heard when you're arriving in an airport at any hour where it's mostly deserted. The awe of of a large, empty, glass and concrete building coupled with the quiet relief of being on solid ground again led to this mixtape. Mostly trip-hop tracks blended with lounge and ambient tracks gives this mix ample space, while remaining silky enough to keep between your ears with a set of headphones. However, this mix is also aptly suited for warm days and late nights; headphones and loudspeakers. http://soundcloud.com/prollen/airport-international-arrivals

SUBFRIES posted:I checked out the Bromadar mix, the one that goes from dnb in to dubstep. A lot of tracks on it that I like, from both genres, so I wanted to hear how you put it together. Here is my constructive criticism: Thanks, it sure does! I am trying to extend the D&B section; I don't entirely think that track works well as an opener. There actually is no bitcrusher effect, that's some sort of buffer error that I need to work out (I didn't hear it during the recording, only in playback). I probably just need to tweak my buffer sizes and sacrifice some things. It's definitely related to your last point, which takes a mouthful to answer: I'm using Traktor to mix. The S4's output goes directly into my Access Virus, which handles those beat rushing effects (and a little more) through its Atomizer option. From there it hits a KP3, then goes into my TC Konnekt48 interface where it goes right out to my speakers through direct monitoring. I have an Ableton Live session running, right now pretty much in the background and for recording the set only. Live is tempo sync'd to Traktor, and sends the sync right through USB to the Virus to keep the beat-rushes (generally) on time - tempo changes confuse both Live and the Virus so I tend to ignore it during mixes where the Deck Sync isn't on in Traktor. Sometimes it does hang up though, which is why a lot of the rushes don't work (my timing isn't perfect, but it's better than that). The background Live set is overkill for now, but hopefully in the future it will allow me to launch stem mixes of my own tracks alongside a DJ set, and maybe MIDI data too - it's already stable enough to support playing some drum loops and manually playing the other four octaves of my Virus, or my microKORG. But like I said, so far I've only used it to record, edit and master the mixes on my SoundCloud. I have no decent songwriting material yet. As you can see, I am a gearhead with a lust for stupid complication. There are still some hurdles to overcome like the pesky fact that Live's sync tends to stay a quarter note behind Traktor, and the issue with the Atomizer hanging up. But so far everything runs with zero latency from S4 through my monitors, and that's pretty satisfying. TL;DR Answer: I use Traktor to mix, Live to record it, a heavy-rear end synth and a KP3 as an effect loop, and an unnecessarily complex monitoring/recording system. Vernacular: I just picked up DJing as more than a hobby months ago, having only ever really dabbled when I bought some decks in highschool, and then played around with a roommate's 1200s and Traktor in college. I don't have much to compare it to as I've never used another controller. But it seems pretty solid so far, and very intuitive. Fun to mix with, but I also can't wait for Traktor 2 so I can use my turntables to control Decks C & D. EDIT: I'm also 'teaching myself' video editing for comedy with friends. And I'm a stupid dick. I'm a little apprehensive in posting this since it's only the second little set I've recorded for myself. I've had some friends tell me they liked it but I know that I'm not the happiest with it, and would like to get an idea of what people who actually know what they're doing think. I started messing about with DJ software just a bit before the turn of the year to make use of a midi controller I've had sitting around taking up space, and so far I've been relatively happy with what I've been doing. I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses for myself but I'm using a Roland PCR500 so I have plenty of sliders, pads and knobs but no jog wheels available to me. I can't help but think that some jogwheels might help a bit but by no means do I think that it's something that's holding me back. This mix is... sporadic, it's pretty dub/bro-step heavy with a disco/house opening. I'll put it out there that I think the opening is rough: There's some clipping or encoding errors that weren't there or that I didn't notice when I was putting this together and I dropped the second song at the wrong time. It resolves itself but I think it sounds weird. I'm sure there are some other things I've done wrong in this too without being aware of it. I think I dropped way too many Nero tracks in this now that I've typed up the set list, but I am quite fond of the ending so if you get past my lovely intro and still think it sucks please skip to the last two tracks and give that a go since I feel that's the bit that wound up the best. Feedback is greatly appreciated, I want to get better at this after all. http://soundcloud.com/beep-boop-deet-deet/forp-we-live-in-the-future 1. Melee Beats - Vengeance 2. Daft Punk - Superheros 3. It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what is going wrong, so work on it. I'm going to say what I said in one of the other SA DJ threads - every once in a while someone posts a mix that either a) sucks or b) is uninspiring. When someone points this out the person that posted the mix gets all defensive and the thread spirals into poo poo. But the advice given is usually good, and it consists of: dig deeper, have some sort of vision for the mix (e.g. pick a genre or two) and don't post if you're clearly not happy with it. I also personally think playing two, or in your case, three tracks by the same artist, especially back to back is a "DJ don't." But I also have rules like "don't play Deadmau5" so, you know, I'm a dickhead. You're a good judge if things are going right or wrong, and recording things and listening back to it is the best way to tell what's going on. Once you're relatively happy with it post it. That all said, I quickly listened to your mix and was all "eh, not my thing." so I can't really give you specific feedback. Qualifying that: I'm not much of a dubstep fan, lyrics like "I breathe air" slay me, and I'm kind of over hearing Daft Punk in mixes. That's all totally my own baggage. Also everyone keeps pimping this book: http://www.amazon.com/How-DJ-Right-Science-Playing/dp/0802139957

I was asked by a friend to make another workout/dance tape, which isn't anything special. I finally got my hands on a copy of Ableton, so I was waiting for an excuse to mess with it. The issue lies in the music selection she wanted: new electronic music that I thought was cool, some old-school electronic music from multiple genres, and a few popular dance club songs for good measure. I currently have a 90-minute mashup essentially ready to go, and I'm hoping to find enough extra songs to bring that up to two hours. I'm fairly happy with the harmonic matching between songs, but it's a bitch to plan it out: mad props to you guys who do this regularly and avoid clashing between songs. Track list: Katy Perry - Hot N Cold Smith and Selway - Move (Steve Angello Remix) Paul Oakenfold - Faster Kill Pussycat Sander Kleinenberg - This Is Not Miami Paul Oakenfold - Sex 'n' Money Alex Gaudino - Destination Calabria (Static Shokx Remix) Freemasons - Uninvited The Crystal Method - Busy Child Darude - Feel the Beat Grum - Through the Night Armin van Buuren - Face to Face Kesha - Take It Off Pendulum - The Island, Part 1 (Dawn) Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow Magnetic Man - I Need Air Darude - Sandstorm Nic Chagall - What You Need (NC's Preelectric Mix) Oceanlab - On A Good Day DJ Jose vs. G Spott - House of Justice Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (DJ Tiesto Remix) Cee-Lo Green - gently caress You (Dal Clare Extended Mix) Cee-Lo Green - gently caress You (original) Lady Gaga - Just Dance (Breach Remix) Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling Alex C. - Sweetest rear end Leszek Piesek - Hau Hau Benny Benassi - Satisfaction French Affair - My Heart Goes Boom Carl Cox - Phuture 2000 (Hybrid Remix) EDIT: track list has been updated, link will be posted as soon as the upload is done.
