I know we're probably just going to get another terrible fight that drags on and reveals that Ippo has actually unlearned things about boxing (seriously, what happened to the calm, composed Ippo from the Karasawa fight?) and is only relying on JAPANESE FIGHTING SPIRIT to win, but I can't help but get excited about smug Ippo. Look how smug he is.

Because Ippo is terrified of women aside from his mother and avoids contact with them as much as possible. That's why Kumi is the main love interest- because she will certainly never make a move on her own, taking Ippo out of his comfort zone. Subtext aside, they've made it pretty clear that Ippo finds women sexually attractive, but he is only able to connect emotionally with men.

We finally learn Ippo's weakness! Haha just - oh poo poo we doooo I quite like the idea that Ippo's challenger is the legitimate underdog in this and it's being approached that way. Apart from Ippo of course. Him and his loving opinions. The restrictions in the art style are really becoming apparent to me now. The guy one page 9 is the spit of Ippo.

This is probably one of the rare times where if this turns out in the predictable way I will be completely satisfied. Anything but a 1 Hit KO now will be a huge dissapointment which I am now completely set up for. This is the true power of Ippos Boxing, the power to get my hopes up again and again just to dissapoint me, and every time I come crawling back with the hopes it might change... What a vicious cycle.

That chapter pretty much didn't need to exist. Turned out to be the same loving weakness everyone else has tried to exploit and failed utterly. The rest of the chapter was typical pre-fight worrying with a tiny of bit 'Ippo is acting strange and kind of champion-like, oh wait, no, he's still the challenger.' Jesus.

The only way I can see it going down now. Spoiler just in case Challenger execute his master plan and does exactly what he's trained for, scoring an almost KO. As Ippo goes dark, he remembers all the people he barely beat over the years thanks to his burning samurai spirit, but that's not enough this time. BUT WAIT! He then thinks about the old man and how if he fell, he'd let the old man down. The burning samurai spirit gets an upgrade and he gets up at the count of 9 (to make it more dramatic). Challenger is genuinely surprised, and secretly delighted, as he had no idea Ippo can handle that much punishment. He tries to do it again, but realizes he broke his left hand this time. Ippo throws his first punch in the match, and does the first ever liver punch KO on the challenger. All this will probably be 5 to 6 chapters down the road and we'll all be theory crafting how if Ippo didn't eat that first punch, he would have killed the challenger.

Maybe this fight will make Ippo realize that it's time to relinquish the title and go into the world. He will win, and beat that guy pretty hard. Then he'll realize how much of a fan that guy is, and that he's such an eager, nice guy with a family, someone he could've been friends with... if he didn't have that belt.

The only time anyone actually likes a challenger is if they're an absolute oval office that can back it up (Hawk) or actually have a personality (Sendo) All this guy has done is badmouthed people and he isn't even justified in being a oval office because we don't know if he can actually box worth a drat to back it up.
