So I've played the hell out of pretty much all the Infinity Engine games and just recently got myself a MacBook. Now, it's no PC (oooh, burn... etc) and I do like me some gaming from time to time, so I bought CrossOver and have got a couple things to work on it, but was wondering if there are any good RPGs that work natively on the Mac (finished KOTOR so no love there, and I tire of Diablo after 10 minutes), so maybe you can suggest a decent GOG game or a Mac-native RPG for someone who loved the Inifnity Engine titles, the Neverwinter Nights games, Dragon Quest IX on the DS, seriously dislikes random encounter combat, favours stories over Diablo style number games, and so on. Lately I've been playing the hell out of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and 5. Love that series.

Maybe it is time for me to try TOEE again, after all these years (last time I got stuck with some bug when you had to kill a giant frog or some-such in a swamp. Couldn't search it when it was killed, so I could not progress with the game).

Also, Planescape. Hmmm... played maybe 10-12 hours of this back in 2008 and that's a lot to get through all over again, so while I know it is World Best RPG Story and I am living in sin by not having finished it, I dunno if I can go there just yet.

Suggestions?

The only thing I can say against Romancing SaGa is that it's really unintuitive and can be kick-you-in-the-balls hard if you don't go out of your way to exploit the mechanics. Some games, I'm cool with doing that. RS is not one of those games, so while people will tell you "oh yeah that last boss? SO. EASY. Look all you have to do is level your Water Magic proficiency up to 40 or higher and then buy this very specific spell for said character who also has to have 50 Bows proficiency, and know this one particular tech, and you'll beat him before he even gets a turn! Oh, what, you don't have that? Well, you're up poo poo creek then, buddy," your mileage will invariably vary.

Xenogears
:goonsay:

When in battle, it looks like you only have four commands. Press right on the D-pad. Surprise! You actually have seven.

To add a few more details about the gear battles, every turn you attack without using a Deathblow your attack level will increase by one, up to level 3 (other actions won't increase your level). The Deathblows you use in your gear are learned at the same time your characters learn their "on foot" Deathblows. This means that if you haven't been using a character much, i.e. benched Rico the moment the opportunity arose, they might not be able to reach attack level 3. Something to be aware of.

Like SpazmasterX said, once your characters reach 7AP, they can achieve attack level Infinity in their gear. If a gear can reach Infinity, there will be a percentage next to Hyper Mode at the right of the screen (at the beginning of the game, this will always say 0%). The default is usually 5%, and this number rises as you lose HP, so if your HP is in the red, you'll be at around 40-50%. If you end a turn at attack level 3 without using a Deathblow, you have that percentage chance of hitting level Infinity. Unlike raising your other attack levels, you can just charge your fuel, activate your booster, or heal yourself and you'll still get a chance to level up. Once you hit level Infinity, you get three turns of insanely powerful attacks. Or you can waste your turn by recharging fuel. Only downside to level Infinity is that your party members' super moves are elemental, and can heal certain bosses. :argh:

Aside from one or two battles, it's a good idea to use your Booster at the beginning of a gear boss battle.

I rate it a fair bit lower than Oath because of really, really serious balance issues and the fact that only Thor gets to actually fight the final boss (meaning you have to play through the game 3 times to even fight it). Also I felt like Hugo was an absolute chore to play, completely unfun and laughably easy even on Hard mode. Still pretty darn good all things considered.

I'm curious, what do you mean by balance issues? As in the bosses not progressing in difficulty? I can agree with that, since I remember one of the first bosses being one of the hardest by a long shot. I didn't mind playing as Hugo though, I thought the change of pace in playstyle was pretty cool. I found Yunika the least fun to play as myself (plus she's the most annoying story-wise too). I'm glad I got her story out of the way first.

Anyhow I think I'll take a shot at Ys 6 and reinstall it. Now that I remember it had trouble with XP for some reason, maybe it'll work better now that I've upgraded.

Edit: Also, as for Hugo being easy, it is worth noting that that was deliberate--it does say "geared toward beginners" under the character select when picking him.

I remember putting the first .hack game in my PS2 some time last year, wandering around a couple hours in the randomly generated worlds and... then I think I just forgot about it.

It's a series I've always thought about playing through but considering the first one is composed of four games alone, I think I'd really have to be in the mood to get through them in any length of time. Do they mix things up between games or does it stay relatively the same throughout?

Xenogears has some hyper awesome overlookable and hugely missable accessories. With the right setup you can drop one of your characters out of their gear and take down gear sized opponents. The benefit to this is that you dont waste fuel and gear sized opponents have a tendency to ignore characters on foot as long as there are other gears around. The elemental doubler on Emeralda could let her do decent damage to gears with her ether attacks, and the Power crisis in particular if given to a character with only 1hp could boost their damage into psychotic ranges.

Haha on man yes it does, and it doesn't cost extra fuel per turn, either, so it synergizes excellently with the 100-strength Engine that only has 1000 fuel. I read about this one when I was trying seriously to beat XG about ten years ago, I had to retry the Hammer fight a dozen times before I was able to get the Collector's Card off of him so I could actually get those to even just drop in the first place.

There were indeed some pretty nuts setups, but I mean incidentally and probably kind of predictably considering one of my biggest bullet points on "hey is this RPG enjoyable?" my favorite part was naming my Gears.

The game doesn't really start until you get out of Blackmoon forest. Do yourself a favor and grind up Fei and Citan to level 16 before you get to the next town so they can learn their Square X Deathblows. It'll just make your life easier.

And yeah you get free boost in Gears if you have the Speed Shoes. Also, heh scrublords that need to use a Power Crisis on black dragons. I was grinding Fei solo on black dragons just to get him high enough to learn Yamikei.

Yeah that's exactly what I mean. The game difficulty is all over the place, and drops off really, really hard near the end of the game once you get the Burst ability. I can't recall ever having to learn anything about Xava because I just activated Burst and then mashed on her till she died, even on Hard. I always found the hardest boss to be the one in the desert with the quicksand and all that.

Yunika was my favorite to play, but her balance was even worse. Her fire sword is just crazy overpowered.

I remember beating the first game but getting pissed on the second game because the subtitles wouldn't work when I tried to play it in Japanese so I quit despite picking up all 4 games at once for cheap. I wonder if it'll work right on my PS3. I guess I should just play in english. I remember the game being pretty fun despite being an obvious grind. I really dig games that play into their concepts like this and Assassin's Creed. It really great for immersion despite all the game-ness of it.

In retrospect the game had a lot of lazy design, but since it was done "on purpose" to pad the game since you're playing an MMO in game, it was pretty cool. The game itself was a grind and the level design could have been better. I've only played the first one so I don't really know what the second through fourth game add to the series but I can't imagine it being that different. Can someone elaborate on this? If it doesn't change much I can imagine the game could have benefited from being cut down to two games.

I never got into GU. Was that really good? Or more of the same except with more crazy plot and tweaked gameplay?

Xenogears was one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Great music, great battle system, and the graphics were pretty boss at the time. The story is pretty out there but if you get into it, it's one of the coolest plots and settings in JRPGs. It's also not the normal cliche storyline either and the setting/premise itself isn't too overdone (maybe certain elements of it are). I loved how the game wasn't afraid to use ridiculous caricatures of characters and play homage to things like Giant Robo.

Plus the gears themselves were so awesome.

As for as characters go, what do you guys think of Chu? I remember her being pretty insane because her "gear" form stats are based on her normal stats so using items to boost her stats permanently also made her gear form insane. Plus she doesn't need fuel.

The Valkyrie Profile game is a strategy RPG, unlike the console games in the series. However, there's little to no grinding since the maps you do for the story are pretty much the only maps in the game. There's maybe one side map per chapter that's optional if you want levels. The standard series battle system is still there and awesome, and it's still tough to get the best ending. I recommend it, I had a ton of fun playing it.

Man it's no fun to play through a game like that. There will be no end to things you will have to follow a guide to get the first time. Just play and have fun. Most of the game you will be able to figure out just fine.

The only thing I wish I had known really prior to playing Xenogears the first time was info on a certain boss on Disc 2: After this boss receives a certain amount of damage, it will countdown to a self-destruction. You do NOT want to let the boss self-destruct, because if it does so you will not get a really awesome item called the Trader's Card.

As for favorite parties, I think without a doubt the on-foot party has to be Fei/Citan/Billy. Billy's support skills are just too useful. But for Gears, I would probably indeed give the nod to Fei/Citan/Emeralda.

E: Also I'm going to repost my blurb on Deathblows currently on beforeiplay, only because I feel like SpazmasterX's explanation is a little complicated:

"Fight your non-boss, non-Gear battles the following way unless you run into trouble: cycle through EVERY possible Square, Triangle, and X combination that does not end with a X . This is because ending something in a X will start a Deathblow. So if you have 4 AP, you should do:

Round 1: T-T-T-T

Round 2: T-T-S

Round 3: T-S-T

Round 4: S-T-T

Round 5: S-S

Round 6: X-T

Round 7: Repeat

Adjust the pattern as you get more AP, and of course if the battle ends before you reach the end just try to remember where you left off last battle.

This is important because you will optimize your Deathblow learning efficiency, and will in fact master Deathblows before they are even available to you. Since Deathblows are largely more important than leveling up, this will save you a lot of time grinding or otherwise wasting your time trying to learn Deathblows."

And if it wasn't clear, each of these cycles would be independent for each character (since everyone learns Deathblows individually, of course).
