VzW is currently down to 18-24 hours, with an ultimate goal of <12 hours (IIRC). 4G data reporting is dramtically improved, as the usage is usually reflected within 15 minutes. (This is probably because the 4G network was built 100% from the ground-up by big red, while the 3G network is a hodge-podge of different mergers and acquisitions.)

Well the short of it is that I probably use at least 50% of the family's current monthly minutes. I wasn't sure if Verizon had that special "top five" sort of thing still as someone mentioned, but if I were on her network, it'd cut what she pays by half and my own reception might be better. Considering my location I'm surprised it's always 1/2 bars. Maybe it's the phone, but it's a pain to get Verizon to do anything at all about it even if you're a good customer.

Regarding the bit that I bolded: fuckin aye, that's a crazy high return rate. I know that the rooting/rom community has embraced the hell out of the device (which is fine, I get that), but I find it odd that they're all so quick to dismiss the Droid Charge. I'm assuming that they just have a grudge against Samsung. This may not be entirely unfounded, but even Cyanogen said that he likes where Samsung is going. The Droid Charge's bootloader is also unlocked by default, ffs. The only two technological advantages the Thunderbolt has, that I can think of right now, are 256MB of extra RAM, and the use of two radios, which allows one perk: Voice & Data at the same time, even if you're not in a 4G area (which the Droid Charge can't do.) This does come at the expense of battery life though. It's my understanding that the Thunderbolt uses Qualcomm chipsets, which are power hungry, whereas the Droid Charge uses a Samsung chipset, that by all accounts, appears to be way more power efficient. Also the physical buttons are great.

Based on XDA and my experience you're in the minority and probably have a bad phone, unless you're talking about the known issue with the OTA update breaking phones. When running stock I never had issues with speed or Sense UI force closing. The only issue I have run into that wasn't related to ROMs and kernels is battery life, and that may still be a network connection issue since it was noticeably worse after LTE went down. LE posted:Regarding the bit that I bolded: fuckin aye, that's a crazy high return rate. I think that's more related to the rebooting issue from the OTA update, and Verizon is replacing phones due to this. Annoying but they're accepting responsibility. It's not just a grudge. I've never owned a Samsung but their credibility is pretty shot due to software problems and taking forever on updates. Many people aren't about to give Samsung a chance until they show a good track record. I think the Charge is ugly looking, plastic-y, and don't see physical buttons as being a selling point.

Exactly. Everyone should just realize that none of Verizon's LTE devices are 'new' devices and don't reflect whatever new practices their respective companies have adopted in the meantime. Most optimistic guesses put the Bionic/Targa early to mid July, but it could end up being significantly later if Motorola can't iron out their LTE troubles with Verizon. On that though, it's refreshing that Motorola took the stance they did with the Bionic. It was already a newer design phone than any other LTE phone Verizon was pushing out when they showed it off at CES. On top of that though, because they recognized that it was going to be delayed for LTE, they took the opportunity to keep it updated while they worked out the kinks. Honestly, when the thing comes out, it should be a beast. I would watch X2 reviews closely. They are likely what the Bionic reviews would have been if it would have come out since specwise, the X2 is nearly the same. bull3964 fucked around with this message at 15:39 on May 20, 2011 |

It came out later that LTE didn't play nice with Tegra chips and was causing massive overheating. So, I'm going to assume that they're working on making the device slimmer, and with better heat sinking. Or, maybe they're waiting for qualcomm to come around. What I really wish is that they kept the same form factor, but made the battery even bigger (bigger than 1930, yes) to enable us to enjoy using the phone for more than a day of moderate/heavy use.

So my screen on my OG Droid cracked about a week ago, but it's been working fine up until just now - the display simply just stopped working altogether. Asurion wants to charge me $99 to replace it for the exact same model, which IMO is completely ludicrous. I'm eligible for an upgrade, but I wanted to wait until Verizon released an LTE phone that I actually liked. Am I basically poo poo out of luck right now, unless I find a cheap used phone to use until I'm ready to upgrade?

This happens all the time with Asurion. If they don't have any refurbs in stock, they will offer something else from new inventory. A popular phone like the D1 is going to be in stock for a long, long time. It can work both ways though as asurion tries to screw you. I had a customer with a Palm Pre get sent a Pixi as its "comparable replacement" and once had a Droid replaced with an LG Fathom. Both times Asurion was called and they got something that was actually comparable.

The CDMA network is going to be around for a while, they're not going to get (Vo)LTE-capable handsets in the hands of everyone for quite some time, especially if it requires a data-plan/significant-increase in monthly cost. I suppose they could get rid of EVDO (3G) data and just keep 1x service around, but I don't think that's what Droid Life is implying with "3G" in the article.

Anyways, it's in Verizon's best interest to get LTE handsets out to even the cheap rear end free phones over the next 2 years. As soon as their LTE coverage is good enough to make handoffs to 1x a non-issue, they are going to want to switch to VoLTE. The best way to do that is to already have the hardware in people's hands. As far as price, Verizon has made statements in the past that they were interested in the concept of throttling LTE as a tiering mechanism. They could very easily switch a 3G dumbphone over to an LTE dumbphone and limit the bandwidth of the dumbphone to 3G speeds and keep the price the same. bull3964 fucked around with this message at 22:31 on May 20, 2011 |
