Yeah that's a hell of a find, you got yourself 3 solid classics there that are all pretty different, so you're bound to like at least one or two of them.

"You're alright, Harry."
Threads Of Fate/Dew Prism was one of my favorite JRPGs back when I was a small 'un.
Gameplay isn't exactly number crunching goodness, instead it's a lot like a platformer with light RPG elements (equipment, side quests, free roaming hub area). I definitely put a good 20 hours into it, as did my mam.

I had a lot of fun playing this - it reminded me a lot of the Tomba! games. Anyone else play this or anything similar?

Meh, it had it's own lil charm but it had clunky platforming and the world felt really empty. Brave Fencer Musashi is better in every way(even though it also suffers from some annoying platforming parts).

I am actually real life angry that all of those games were available and for only 50 cents.

I would say skip Front Mission and go out and see if you can get Front Mission 3 or 4, that's where the series really starts to pick up. There's also a 5 but it's not available in english, although there is a nifty fan translation available at: http://frontmission.info/

I've been in the mood for some new RPGs as of late, but nothing's really caught my eye, so I'm up for suggestions. If possible, I'd like something with a large, uh, 'narrative focus'. Or, to say it another way, a goddamn book with the occasional interactive bits.

I don't know why, but I'm in the mood for something like that again.

Yes. Yes I have. And I've played through most of the stuff in the ADTRW thread. But I was hoping for something a little more, well, RPGish. A recent VN kick is kind of responsible for this urge, to be honest.

If nothing else, I can always default back to finishing the one or two SaGa games I missed out on.

Not quite a RPG, but the Phoenix Wright series could be interesting. Interactive puzzles with a lot of reading and a plot.

You could always skip to the second disc of Xenogears :v:

Whoops, derp, I managed to edit out my list of things I had played and was looking for something similar to, and forgot to put it back in. The extra plot thing is just a side request at this point, I guess.

-Xenogears/saga
-Every translated SaGa game ever.
-Suikoden
-Similarly every FF.
-Mana Khemia 1/2
-Ar Tonelico 1/2/3.

To be honest, the more obscure it is, the better. I've played a lot of crap.

The Xenosaga games are pretty much movies with some rare occasional gameplay.

Outside of RPGs, The Longest Journey is good for a book-like game. Definitely one of my favorite adventure games.

It's pretty decent. The amount you'll like it depends on how much you like the combat system, since it's basically the entire game. The plot is minimal (But surprisingly not bad, it's more of a slice-of-life JRPG than anything), and almost all the sidequests are more combat, though sometimes with twists.

I'd say get it, it's really fun, even though it gets a little repetitive near the tail-end of the game. Plus, you can add like 50 scopes to a gun and they all stack!

Its... different. Imagine, if you will, bizarro FFXIII. You start the game with all the moves you'll ever have, your full party, and access to the world map. Sidequests abound constantly and the game is split into chapters with clear sub-goals and arcs. Combat involves focus on positioning and proper set-up while weapons are to be tricked out to absurd levels rather than constantly replaced.

On the down-side, it has some wonky balance issues, an early mission is complete bullshit (gently caress you escort mission of a statue), and the game expects you to be pretty competent with the battle mechanics very quickly and to have read the tutorials. Expect to redo a lot of fights because you messed up.

a_gelatinous_cube
Feb 13, 2005

I enjoyed both games, but Resonance of Fate is pretty much the exact opposite of Final Fantasy XIII in every way, and not in a good way. Instead of a twenty hour tutorial, you get a couple of bad text screens that don't really explain anything (and you can get attacked on the way to read those screens!).Instead of pressing x to battle through trash you have to set up complicated group attacks to beat anything, which really gets old by the end of the game. Instead of having a convoluted story line and no side quests, you get no story line and everything feels like a side quest.

I don't recall any gamebreakers in it. Unless you're a nitpicker for "oh why does this one specific lovely spell not work" or "why does this exploit work," it's perfectly fine.

And I don't even know of any features that don't work; just that there was some translation patch text display errors that you just gotta live with--it's a translation patch, you can't seriously expect AAA budget display solidity--and the only exploit I know of only applies to the optional Dark Rabite superboss.

If you continue with the recover your health option the statue recovers it's health, too. I ended up having to do that on the last screen.

I thought the game was really fun to play and the slice of lifey story was awesome as well, but I like difficult games and doing side quests. If you try to just attack the game(especially without going through tutorials) it will probably kick your rear end.

Oh I know, its just it costs like 50,000 points which is a huge amount even if you did all the sidequests. Ended up learning how to perfect every room except one and taking down the boss in less than 3 turns. Felt good when I did it.

Vagrant Story is the best PS1 RPG, just read an FAQ on how combat and weapon types/bonuses work because the game is super obtuse about explaining these and you'll end up going through the game wondering why you're doing 1 or 2 HP damage to enemies all the time.

Not game breaking, but certainly annoying. For one the Agility stat is hosed. It's suppose to raise your critical hit rate and your evasion. Problem is by all reports, evasion does nothing and critical hits are non existent. The evasion bug also makes Light Duran's shields pretty useless, since they don't raise Def or Mag. Def, only Evasion. I think they are also suppose to give elemental protections, but those are bugged too. On top of that I remember there being some glitch with the way the days of the week interacts with elemental sabers. It's something like if cast an elemental saber on the corresponding day of the week, it actually increases enemy's damage to you, rather than the other way around. So casting Diamond Saber on Gnome's Day is actually a very bad thing, when you'd think it would be good. These are just the one's that I can remember, but I know there are more. Like I said, its a similar situation to FF6. The game is perfectly playable with the glitches, but it'd just be nice to have them fixed.
