No loving kidding, that's way better than I ever see. I averaged mid 24s on my last trip back from CA but I was doing 80+ wherever possible, and at one point was doing drat near 100 while sandwiched between a pair of Honda minivans :psyduck:

Since I've owned the car, commuting to school/work which is like half struggling to get to a freeway and then half freeway, I have averaged 24 mpg. Less when I go autocrossing and that sort of thing. The dash computer tells me that my average speed is something depressing like 25 mph. :(

I'm contemplating what 17" wheels I'll buy once I wear out the factory tires. I've been tossing around either the RPF-1's or possibly the 05-07 STi BBS wheels. With the BBS wheels you have to have the hub machined out to fit our hubs, but it just so happens a guy nearby is selling them already machined-- in gold. The benefits with those wheels are that you can't get much cheaper forged and relatively lightweight wheels. Of course, the RPF-1's are pretty darn light and not terribly expensive.

But that spoke design for whatever reason doesn't suit the MS3 body style as well as it does, say 08+ STi's.

Do any of you guys have aftermarket wheels or are you all running the stockers?

I ran. I ran until my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid. Then I ran some more.
Until I flashed with the AP, I was getting around 21-23 mpg with 70% hwy, 30% city. Long trips (~6 hour drives, a full tank) would net around 28 mpg.

After flashing with the AP, I'm averaging 24 mpg in 70/30 hwy/city. I drove about an hour north on a stop and go state hwy and got back 27mpg that tank. So, it's not all bad.

The previous owner gave it to me when I bought the car. It really is a great product, and it helps lessen the downsides of a black car in the summer.

I'm also in TX and I know countless others that have gotten pulled over for no front plate. It's especially bad in Plano and Addison, but so subjective because cops have never even mentioned it in all the times I've gotten pulled over in my MS3.

I can't explain it, but in the last few weeks myself and my friend (c6 vette) were both pulled over and warned for it. On a drive to New Braunfels a white C6 vette was pacing my friend's car, below the speed limit, and a state trooper pulled right up behind him and immediately pulled him over. On the drive back home the same thing happened to my friend.

Of course, it's not like the Corvette really has a good mounting location for a license plate. And to most people the first gen MS3 doesn't seem to stand out. \/:)\/

As someone who had decided to get a 3 GT instead of Speed3, I'm pretty pissed that Mazda cut the mirror turn signals and interior lighting from the Sport/GT Hatch models to save money. Still there on the speed.

I love the speed, but I live in LA and the roads/traffic in a speed might make me jump out of a building. And I am 100% sure I can't be trusted with a car as fast as the speed.

I've driven pretty much everything and recognize that the 3 is the best overall package. It's just frustrating to be nickle and dimed on a new car with a $24k sticker.

Ok sure its not a huge price, but its big for me ok gosh :colbert:

I won't fault anyone who passes on the Speed3 over a regular 3 (or gasp, another car) who lives/drives in LA often. The only time I ever don't like mine is when I'm getting my spine shortened by the jagged hunks of concrete that California calls "roads" and "freeways".

That said, Mazda is pretty loving bad about letting people pick and choose what you want - case in point, the Mazdaspeed Miata and the fact that you simply could not order it with cruise control. You could get it on the regular NB all day long, but you want the top of the line one? No cruise for you.

They could parts-bin a Mazdaspeed5 with about twenty minutes of actual work (figuring out where to place the intercooler and ducting for it), but nope. Hell, if you want a manual Mazda5 as it is, you're relegated to the poverty spec, because nobody would ever want to row their own gears AND have HIDs!

They could probably parts-bin a Mazdaspeed2 in not much more time than that...please, Mazda? Pretty please? I mean, they already did it for SEMA, and I would buy this in a heartbeat:

VW is similar in that respect. It's just a reality of the US market. The more variations they have the more expensive it is for them to import into the US. Couple that with the vast vast majority of car sales being automatics in the US, it makes sense to offer package combinations that sell in the most volume.

We just have to face that our desires are that of the minority.

e: A Mazdaspeed2 would be excellent. Shoehorn the 2.5L N/A motor in there and it'd be just right.

For you guys with crappy commutes, you might want to consider a set of Koni FSD shocks. They're pretty clever.

http://www.koni-na.com/fsd.cfm

They have a valve in them that is pressure/shock sensitive. When turning, the gradual increase of pressure keeps this valve closed, keeping the shock stiff. On jarring hits, the valve opens, allowing the shock to compress with much less resistance, saving your fillings and back.

Not out for Gen 2 yet, however.

IOwnCalculus

My commute might as well be on a 24-mile-long drag strip, but I've been eyeballing those shocks as well since my stockers are seeping and nearly 90k old. I don't think I've seen a single negative review.

I've had yellows before. They're great, but don't expect comfort. Supposedly the FSDs perform just as well, but without the adjustability.

IOwnCalculus

Also, am I confusing this with someone else, or do Koni shocks have a lifetime warranty? For example, I buy a set of FSDs, and in three years when I've put another 90k on the car and they're old and leaky, I can remove them and ship them back to be rebuilt for free (shipping costs aside)?

Koni and Bilstein and probably every other damper maker has "lifetime warranties" on their poo poo. It spells out "defects in material and workmanship" and just getting worn out over time isn't a defect. It's for the lifetime of the shock, not you.

Fair enough, I could've sworn I'd read it being one of those "lifetime" warranties like CSK and Autozone used to do for brake pads.

Lifetime warranties on wear items/consumables would be awesome. The service rep. at my dealership looked at my tires and sighed at me. I asked if they could replace those for free along with the ground wire. (A guy can dream, right?)

This thread is now about wheel tire combos. The 05+ to 07 BBS wheels are readily available and machining the hub can't be that pricey. Alternatively, RPF1's are a few pounds lighter, but not forged.

I'm looking at a 2001 323F 2.0 (Protege5 in other parts of the world) which is cheap, due to stuck front calipers (Easy, I can fix that) and a CEL (less easy, I have no clue.) Haven't talked to the seller yet, but the ad says that the oxygen sensor needs replacing.

1) Anybody know about the CEL, and what the most common causes are. Does the O2 sensor sound about right?

2) Anything else I should check on this particular model? I know they rust in their rear wheel arches (wouldn't be a real mazda 323 if it didn't) and that the ABS sensors can be finicky.

Edit: Haha, so I went and took a look, and a potential buyer had stopped by a few days earlier, and they had started the car. The generator had seized, and the accessory belt had just been stuck on there, so the driving pulley had spun on the belt and heated it up until it snapped.
The seller generously offered to reduce the price by the price of an alternator.
For a car that can't be test driven.
Good luck, buddy.

Been seeing a definite drop in fuel mileage - last two fillups prior to today were in the 21-22 range when I've been averaging 24. This morning, worked out to just a bit over 20, and I haven't suddenly changed my driving habits. I did get a trigger on my TPMS this morning, though, and found all four tires to be definitely low; odd since I checked pressures maybe three weeks ago and all four were within 1PSI of spec.

I'll probably plug in the scanner and see what I'm getting for short and long term fuel trims, wonder if I have a dying O2 that's causing it to think it's running lean. Of course, I could also see 24-25 on this tank now that the tires are back up to spec :v:

On the wheel question: The BBSs all the way, if you can deal with the work that needs to be done. They look gorgeous on these cars.

SynMoo

Considering your car's age, I'd be suspecting any typical maintenance items you haven't yet addressed. Air filter, fuel filter, plugs, etc. I'd also check for vacuum and boost leaks. As you suggested, a failing O2 sensor can also start to shift you off in the wrong direction.

Regarding tire pressures, if you've had big temperature swings, that can be the culprit, but that usually happens more in the spring and fall.

I only got a little over 20 at the last fill up, but it was driving on a ton of 35 mph roads full of stop lights. :|

I need to trawl the NASIOC for sale forums and find some wheels. A guy in Houston listed his already machines gold BBS wheels, but he wanted $900 which was kind of outrageous. I would think that you could get a machine shop to do the wheels for maybe $100?

As for the keys going out of sync, my first thought was a bad BCM-- but that's just a guess from the BCM going out on a family member's Vue.

Air filter is an AEM dryflow. It's due for a cleaning in ~2k miles. Did plugs at 60k, aren't due for another 30k.

Fuel filter hasn't been done and I really should do it...for some reason I am terrible about actually changing those on cars. That said I just don't see that dropping me 4MPG without making me run so lean as to cause huge power loss, CELs, and potentially engine damage. I might add it to my next maintenance session (rotate tires, clean air filter, try YET AGAIN to fix my passenger front bumper clips) if I don't see an improvement this tank.

I suppose it's possible, but I fill up at the exact same QuikTrip 90% of the time, and 90% of those times I even use the exact same pump. I also haven't seen any variance in how many miles before the gauge starts moving from full (30 miles plus or minus a few always does the trick).

I'm almost done with the tank I put in after I aired the tires back up, and based on the odometer so far I think that was it.

Also, passed 88888 miles tonight. Still looking at aftermarket shifters, the top part of mine finally came off all the way. It's better than scalding my hand, but not by much.
