Explosions in the Sky is coming to the University of Illinois to headline the Pygmalion Music Festival in September. This festival has been getting pretty big the last few years and it's gonna get even better now that they're booking more recognizable bands.

I'm super pumped but according to setlists I've found online they never play Have You Passed Through This Night anymore which is a bummer.

What a bunch of wankers. That's hilarious though. "Yeah, we'll change the meaning of the phrase. Us, a small unknown scene group, compared to a million selling book and movie." Idiots.

At least one guy got it.

Yeah, the book was insanely popular (and trash). Hence the film a few years later. Claiming your band predates the film adaptation really doesn't redeem any credibility.

In an attempt to rerail this thread, I'd like recommend the following post rock bands:
Click the album art for a link to a song!

Gifts From Enola. They take the usual post rock textual route and then climax into a post metal/hard rock mix which then comes back down into the soundscape realm. Love this band.

If These Trees Could Talk, think This Will Destroy You's Tunnel Blankets, but slightly more dynamic.

Pg.Lost, similar to Gifts From Enola but their climaxes are much more recognizable as post rock. Anyways, this is my favourite band of the lot.

They'll license their music out to anything, it seems. I Believe In Your Victory was in the remake of Prom Night that came out a few years ago, and I heard them in an episode of either 16 And Pregnant or Teen Mom one time.

They were excellent the one time I saw them in town, but I doubt they'll be back soon. They were the first on of four bands, and with contradictory times listed everywhere, they apparently went before 6:30, and I only caught their last 3 or 4 songs.

<-- Yep

I saw them for the 11th time headlining the new stage at 2000 Trees this weekend. They absolutely destroyed the place, when they started Search:Party:Animal the crowd erupted and I wasn't sure I was going to get out of there alive. Also watching Tony and Rory crowd surfing during the last moments of The Voiceless has got to be of the best gig moments I have ever seen. I can second that you should seen them at a smaller venue. It's always nice to hang around after the gig and have a chat with them.

I think they said that they were planning a world tour (America, Europe, Russia) nearer the end of the year so hopefully some of you guys will get a chance to see them soon.

They played a short version of Postcard From 1952. I'm glad they didn't play Trembling Hands, which is the single from Take Care, but either they messed up quite a bit or it wasn't mixed well or something, because it didn't impress me as much as I was hoping it would.

Hopefully they'll be better when I see them live in September.

Frankly I do too like him - his last album is so... alive. I would say that Ous Mal is something along the same lines, but more glitchy. 65daysofstatic if it isn't too obvious?

Russian Circles
Slow Six
My Education
The Samuel Jackson Five
Do Make Say Think
Maserati
Efterklang
The Mercury Program
Tortoise
Jakob

Though a lot of bands are experimenting with the EITS-derivative format (This Will Destroy You/Caspian) so don't totally write it off.

I don't think EITS (or for that matter Mogwai, GYBE) sound is that popular, and although you can do much with 4 guitars, you can do a lot more with other instruments. On the other hand - majority of post-metal reminds me of Pelican.

Here is some of what I listen to:

Arms and Sleepers, Balmorhea, Cougar, Deaf Center, Ef, Fat Jon, Gifts from Enola, Halo of Pendor, Ioch, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Komas Mida, Lights Out Asia, Metavari, New Century Classics, Our Ceasing Voice, Pertegó, Qua, RQTN, Sawhorse, The Waters Deep Here, Under Byen, Valley of Giants, Water & Bodies, Years of Rice & Salt. I don't consider any of those to sound similar to EITS (and frankly similar to each other).

Aye, Moonlit Sailor is optimistic; 65dos, DMST, Dirty Three, Sigur Rós' last album are upbeat as well, but I feel it's mostly doom and gloom - Mogwai, Labradford, Rachel's, Sigur Rós' first album. It's all subjective either way and I appreciate the recommendation :)
