Protip: Check your tires when they're actually cold! Back to just under 25MPG on the last tank.

It seems like it's impossible to find an all-leather shift knob that actually has the correct 6-speed pattern embedded in it. Half tempted to just do a cueball-style delrin shifter.

Probably going to bite the bullet and put in an order for both Koni FSDs and a new throttle body soon, too. Been ignoring both problems for too long now.

What's wrong with the throttle body?

My shift knob is still intact (and attempting to brand my palm whenever left in the sun too long), but the leather dye on the shifter appears to be coming off. There are specks of white and blue showing through on parts of it.

If I run the engine from stone cold for a short amount of time - most often when it's cold and/or humid out - then shut it off and restart, like if I went across the street to get gas before driving to work, I get a CEL and limp-home mode. There's a flaw in some of the early throttle bodies that causes this and the only repair that I've been able to find is replacing it with the updated part number that has an "A" tacked at the end of it.

It's loving spendy, too :(

Midyear '07, I think.

I'm debating whether or not I do actually want to spend the money on it or if I should just stick with keeping a bluetooth OBD2 scanner in the car to clear the light when it comes on. I have seen at least one post from a CX7 owner who had it go into limp-home permanently, though.

That sounds like either they're porting and polishing the one you send, or they send you one and you put yours in as a replacement. However, that's just the mechanical part - the culprit is the actual drive-by-wire component, which I can't seem to find a part number for on its own, even though it supposedly can be removed.

I've got a Cobb SRI in place of the air filter so that's already taken care of.

Spark plugs look easy enough to do I can take care of those and trans oil too. Cool thanks!

So I ended up buying Cobb's downpipe last night. From what I've read, the fuel pump is strongly recommended by Cobb for the downpipe but I think I've seen people running an intake and dp with no problem. Is this true?

Which map should I use with my AP? I've only got an intake and TIP, but as stated I'll be adding the downpipe shortly.

Get a fuel pump or internals. I recently swapped to PTP internals in my pump and they perform much better than the stock parts. Nobody is going to recommend PTP to you, though, because of the way bad blood can quickly build up among people on the internet.

Alternatives include KMD and Autotech, as well as a complete pump such as the one offered by CP-E. Corksport claims to have one in the works, but when it comes to the DISI MZR it's never a good idea to hold your breath waiting.

I'll probably move to a whole CP-E or Corksport pump eventually.

Yea, CP-E's pump is what I've been spying for about two months now. It's just hard to drop a figurative ~$950 up front :( Is there a walkthrough/how-to posted somewhere on how to do this install?

That's what I was thinking as well. I'm already running Stage 1, but I think I read somewhere there's like a Stage 2 safe mode for downpipes but no pump..? Naturally I can't find where I read that now, so I'm sure I either made it up in a drunken stupor or reading about the copious amount of 2010+ maps there are compared to my 08 maps :smith:

I'm sure there is one. It's very easy to remove and install the high-pressure fuel pump. The early bits in this link should help: http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f33/camshaft-driven-fuel-pump-internals-upgrade-11215/

I got doused in boiling hot gasoline when I took my pump out, even though I followed the directions.

I don't know if these are out of their "beta" stage yet, but I have heard of Stage 2 "safe" maps for stock pumps. I believe there's a thread somewhere at Cobb's forums that lists the new OTS maps on the way.

I'm going to go ahead and cross-post something I stuck on MSF.org because you guys are smarter and will probably come up with better answers...

Following successfully integrating my iPhone with my car via the Axxess module (http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f13/ipod-sirius-work-fine-together-82568/) to preserve my OEM Sirius function, steering wheel controls, and provide ID3 data on the stock DIS (red LCD), I've begun to wonder if more can be accomplished.

As it stands, there is no Bluetooth functionality at all, the stock navigation feature set is painfully limited, and certain no-brainer features (RDS text, anyone) are missing entirely.

The features I'd like to add are as follows:
  • Bluetooth calling and A2DP streaming. Pertinent information would be available on the DIS such as callerID number and name (if supported by the phone and BT receiver). Calls should interrupt any other audio signal so no manual muting or switching inputs would be necessary. Some of this can already be accomplished through the purchase of a vehicle-specific harness that can adapt an aftermarket Bluetooth kit (such as Mazda to Vizualogic CigBlue BlueTooth Handsfree Kit New), but not with the level of integration I want. Streaming music ID3 data would be displayed and steering wheel controls would function, if possible.
  • RDS on DIS. Why in the world Mazda decided the USDM cars didn't need to display RDS text on the text-displaying LCD attached to the radio I couldn't possibly imagine. Mazda6s in Europe have this feature (see this stupid video here: http://youtu.be/9_9RTmpnjSs). Does this mean it would be possible to retrofit this feature into a Mazdaspeed6 simply with stock parts?
  • HD radio. This is self-explanatory. HD radio in full quality with ancillary features like RDS text on the stock display.
  • TPMS on DIS. An excellent feature would be a TPMS functioning in the background and only interrupting the stock functions of the display if a wheel passes whatever is the standard pressure threshold (75%?), and then only periodically flashing the alert message without disabling the screen entirely.
  • RADAR detector data on the DIS. Some remote-mounted RADAR detectors like Escort's QI45 have external displays that can be mounted where the driver prefers. I would prefer to use a display that's already built into my car seamlessly. Detector alerts would be displayed on the DIS in the same manner as on their stock remote LCD, identifying bands and displaying signal strength, etc.
  • A backup camera integrated into the stock navigation display. Can this be accomplished without the use of special devices? The stock navigation box has an unused port:
    :
but I'm not sure what it does. I am also aware of the AVElectronic expansion box that can accomodate a reverse cam, but it isn't the most elegant solution imaginable, and few people seem to have installed one anyway.
  • RDS-TMC for navigation. This one has to be the trickiest of all. Either the stock MS6 navigation supports this feature natively, and requires only a software hack or update, or hardware addition to enable it, or it simply can't be added. Being that traffic information is broadcast for free all over this country, I'd love to be able to take advantage of said service to enhance the usefulness of my GPS.
  • Also, it would be nice to add small stuff like an automatic locking feature to secure the car once in motion (this must be super-easy), or automatic windows-up upon remote locking the car.
  • Could the trip computer functions available on the LCD be reactivated? If the GOODbox could take OBD data and display it on that same LCD, it seems like a similar device should be able to accomplish use of the trip computer display.

It seems to me that it should be possible to add many of these features (particularly the additional DIS functions) by means of some intermediary module — that plugs or is in some other way wired into the stock head unit — that can interrupt the usual signals it receives routinely and supply its own based on information sent from various other devices such as a RADAR detector or TPMS or HD radio adapter, or whatever.

Would an Arduino device, or maybe a .NET Gadgeteer be appropriate for solving these communication problems? The box needs to be able to interface with devices like those listed above — probably through a variety of means including WiFi, Bluetooth, and various cables — and then simply output whatever I program it to. Nothing difficult, just a lot of automated electrical and translation of small bits of data from X into Mazda DIS text.

Anyone have any advice for how I should go about attempting this?

For something small like that, toss them an oil change too, or have them do the coolant flush. Dealers are more likely to work with you on small warranty issues if you're actually paying them to do something else while the car is in there. Helps them defray the cost of the warranty work a bit since Mazda is very strict about how much they'll pay for certain jobs.

It's actually not covered under powertrain, but it's part of the limited warranty. If anyone under warranty throws this code, they can do an ECU reflash for you. Otherwise the part is pretty drat expensive. I'll just clean the EGR when I do hit 60k, and if I keep getting the CEL, it sounds like there are ways to clear it.

Plus I've done plenty of oil changes with the dealer, so new HPFP and turbo have both been justified.

Lower compression ratio on diesel produces less NOx and soot because combustion is more uniform. NOx regulations on diesels in the states are the reason why we don't have some of the Euro diesels that run 60 MPG, like the VW Polo Bluemotion.

Once my 06 MS6 hit 50K miles my CEL would come on throwing the same code. I took off the EGR and cleaned it basically following the instructions from the MSF.org excepting taking off the tube. It worked for like a week and then the code hit again. The weird thing is my CEL comes on after I fill up my tank, and shuts off towards the end of the tank (usually). I don't know if it just happens to be since my commute/weekly miles is pretty consistent with the amount of times my car turns on and off enough to do the cycles to reset the code by the OBD. I have decided when I need to get a few more things off of Street Unit that I am just going to pick up this piece as well:
http://www.streetunit.com/StreetUnit_EGR_Block_Off_Plate_p/sumzregrp.htm
I googled the EGR problem as much as I could. I found an old thread at the Mazda6 club where Whoosh first made this plate, and many other people there said the light went off, and never went on again, others said the light is still pretty common. I just know this will probably cause a headache when it comes time for I/M. Plus having my CEL on most of the time is also obnoxious.

*edit: I am at ~58K miles on my car now
