It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am.
Does the UK have any laws about that? I'm almost certain that it'd be illegal for former soldiers to be doing that in the US.

edit: I guess if the UK is officially doing it as well that probably makes it okay, even if Qatar and others are paying for it.

Yeah, although it really wouldn't surprise me if special forces units were significantly involved here and there in opening the path for the rebels. I agree that they probably weren't the main invasion force, though.

I doubt they were participating in any fighting. A huge amount of SOF work involves training and advising foreign militaries, which is probably what they were doing. And possibly arming them, but I don't think the UK would do that directly.

Directly is such an interesting term though, I mean if they happen to know that Qatar has recently acquired several tons of AK-47 Ammo from Albania... I mean they might as well help distribute that.

They were probably one of the first ones into high value areas, however. You know that there's a lot of intelligence agencies that were chomping at the bit to get their hands on material and intelligence of the regime.

But yeah, they probably were mainly training and advising and letting the rebels do their thing for the most part. Might be why there wasn't a major battle at the compound and might be why there's no sign of the Colonel at this point, but less likely.

Well it's only fair that France and the U.K. get to keep Libya, seeing as how they did all the hard work. Finders keepers, etc. Firing a gun, well, anyone can do that. But providing air support, weapons, tactical advice, intelligence, and special forces operatives? That's the kind of work that ought to earn you a shiny new Libya.

You have to consider, many African nations have internal divisions which could easily be considered, to an extent, rebel movements. Not all certainly and not only in Africa, but viewed from the perspective of a government in Africa, any western intervention to help a rebel movement overthrow the government is deeply uncomfortable on several levels.

Not going to try and defend the Al Qaeda comments.

Well, they were definitely involved in that at least. We may never really know the extent of their involvement. Not all of the ex-SAS and other special forces units are associated with foreign governments, though--the NTC apparently hired them from security firms as well. That some of these may have launched the occasional discrete attack on a particularly troublesome target wouldn't surprise me, is all I'm saying.

They're good buddies. At one point when Ilyumzhinov was the president of the international chess federation, he wanted to hold the world championship in Libya--unfortunately this didn't happen since Gaddafi wasn't so keen on letting Jewish chessplayers in.

I'm sure this will be an interesting case:

quote:

A London law firm, which has been appointed to advise Muammar Gaddafi, has defended taking on the Libyan dictator as a client.

My colleague Robert Booth reports that Shaun Murphy, senior partner at the firm, Edwards Duthie, confirmed he was the only solicitor in England and Wales acting for the Gaddafi family. He stressed that anyone was "entitled to legal representation".

On Tuesday the high court released papers confirming that Edwards Duthie, on behalf of Gaddafi, had issued a legal challenge with the aim of removing representatives of the National Transitional Council from Libya's London embassy and consulate buildings.

The firm, which has its head office in Ilford, north-east London, has lodged two cases with Mr Justice Edwards-Stuart, of the Queen's Bench, alleging that the rebel diplomats are trespassing. Court papers describe the cases as The Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya vs persons unknown. Claims for possession orders have been adjourned until October.

Gadaffi had close ties to a lot of African governments, and routinely made lots of diplomatic trips around the African continent, promoting himself. It's unsurprising that an African commentator is critical of his removal from power.

Good point. Those who aren't directly involved with the rebels ongoing combat operations are probably really busy scanning and uploading anything that they can get their hands on in that compound.

Libya under Gaddafi also threw around significant amounts of money to African countries and the African Union. As a result, much of Africa is not entirely keen on his removal.
