So I played DXHR and basically I can say that the only thing it has over this is Michael McCann, music and ambience was fan-loving-tastic. Yeah it did combat gameplay a lot better (that is, cover and standard deus ex drag/throw crates, bodies) but I did not find the places you go to all that memorable. The potential it depicts within the scenery just made me wish "yeah, tell me why I can't go over there? ". If there's something that both games take up the mantle in unison, it's that pistols are complete beatsticks. It's funny how our memories tend to gloss over the bad or detracting details of some nostalgic wossums but since I played AP 7 times I think I remember to think that this was a diamond in the rough not without it's own flaws. I think my dream espionage game would involve the reactivity in dialogue of AP combined with the third person combat of HR with grappling hook and RDX friendly levels. One highlight though was on one of the "find the arms dealer" assignments. I told the guy I was from Canada, and he didn't buy it so I cold-cocked him and his buddy and slaughtered the other guards with my twin uzis. gently caress... yes.

I just don't otherwise recall Mina reacting poorly to suave except for the occasional "yeah okay Mike ." But she consistently liked me through the game so that might have been why.

Regarding differences in a Veteran playthrough, can you get both the data and save Albatross at the mansion? I remember I chose the data on my recruit playthrough and wasn't given an option to save Albatross after it and vice-versa on my normal playthrough.

Having enough Technical Aptitude (I think it's 8 ranks?) will also work.

Veteran is just like "Yeah, I'll save both of them" and pulls it off, because that's how great Veteran Mike is.

Is Awareness (Basic) bugged, the one at stealth level 2? When I upgrade to it, my awareness skill just stops working. I press the button, the little icon pops up for a second, then vanishes, doesn't trigger the cooldown or anything. I thought maybe it was just the mission so I waited and tried upgrading it on the next mission, no dice.

I believe that it sorts itself when you stick another AP into stealth to get to level 3.

So hey I'm playing as a Recruit for my first run-through before my Sterling Archer Veteran game, and the number of Recruit dialogue options appears to have dropped off really sharply after leaving the Grey Box. I mean I only just finished Saudi Arabia so it's not like I'm far in, I was just wondering whether they come back in force or not (I hope they do)

quote:- Recruit is not a difficulty setting! Playing as a Recruit means you start with less AP, and everyone in Alpha Protocol thinks you're kind of a chump. Don't play Recruit on your first time (And for god's sake, don't play Recruit on Hard difficulty). Why? I'm doing this, and it's not especially difficult. This sounds like a good thing, because many modern RPGs let you specialize in everything, taking away the fun (ie Mass Effect, Deus Ex HR)

Speaking of Recruit, is there a cheat/hack/save/whatever to unlock Veteran on the PC version? I already beat the game (several times) on my Xbox and unlocked it there, but I have since lost my copy and bought it again for PC during the steam sale. But I still want my sweet, sweet Veteran mode reward...

It's worth noting that even if you don't have specific options, some NPCs will still mention your backstory (Marburg and Leland, maybe others). I know Marburg will speculate that bringing in a greenhorn was some sort of strategic move by the gov't. Thorton will also correct him and state that he is a (whatever "specialization class" you chose after Saudi).

Finished the game for the first time last night. The game was a blast with the exception of that final loving mission, argh. I managed to find Mina during the final mission but there was no sign of Scarlet, even though Leland mentioned that they had captured her. Did I miss something or did the game bug out? Speaking of bugs, I had trouble with Westridge and his drat turret, I think I died something like five times during that section. On my final attempt, he somehow teleported right outside the upstairs door and just stood there while I shot him in the head . Best 2 euros I've spent in a while.

There are a few doors in the final mission that immediately shut right after you pass through them, with no warning and no way to go back. That especially bothered me because I like to take my time to explore an entire mission map, and this prevented me from doing so--not to mention missing a major optional objective.

Well, it sold ok, but Sega didn't think it sold enough to want to start talking about putting money up for another game in the series. And yeah, the review shitstorm probably didn't help.
|
# ? Sep 25, 2011 10:54 |
It doesn't matter was Sega thinks, though. They don't own the IP. If Obsidian want to do another game then it's just a matter of convincing another publisher to pony up money for the sequel to their less than stellar first game.

Not only did it sell ok, but most reviews weren't even that bad either. It has a metacritic rating of 72. Publishers (Sega) just don't want to put money behind anything that isn't 80+. Game development is too costly to risk money on niche titles, and I guess less than 80 is "niche" these days. 10 years ago, this game would have been considered a good success and a fairly likely candidate for a sequel.

Okay, finally started playing this game. Despite going with level 2 Stealth and Pistol/Chain Shot, I completely blow on the orientation runs (save the Gadget/Grenade area) and the first Saudi mission (Nasri). It seems any attempt at stealth fucks up, I have to go through at the four big open area setpieces with the guards on heightened alert, including one where I managed to stealth all the way through, only to have a guard appear once my Awareness expired and alert everyone to my presence. For the first mission, it seems that the only good weapon are my fists, as I have to mag dump my pistol into someone to potentially kill them and the SMG can't hit the broadside of a barn. I just run screaming into the guys and beat the poo poo out of them. Also, the deactivate alarm and computer hacking minigames frustrate the hell out of me. Second mission, the detention camp, was a lot easier because I used the rifle, getting crit shots on everything in the big open area. I got the Limited Bloodshed perk, which added 10 to my Endurance. I managed to figure out how to work Chain Shot and, man, does that make things poo poo loads easier (my best one was killing two guards at once with it) and I desperately either want to find something that will decrease the cooldown or increase the number of shots chained. Also, I used Radio Mimic to shut down alarms. Is there a way to continue to improve my experience with this game, like certain equipment to find? I'm wondering if the map purchases are worth it, since, on the Nasri mission, the map was loving useless and got me into more trouble than I wanted to. Also, is there way to buy addition customization options. I really want black Razors shades instead of those bright orange ones.

For the pistols, wait for the Critical Hit to line up, always. Nasri, can't help you there, but I don't remember enemies popping in suddenly at the end of an era. Personally, I always fire Awareness up for one 'wasted' shot at the beginning of each to be sure of how many enemies are in the vicinity. thepopstalinist posted:STEVE HECK always prefers suave responses. I dunno, I really woulda liked to have seen more recognition of your special-game status. Grigori, I think, would have been great for recruit/veteran stuff. Like, I can imagine on Veteran: "Hey Grigori." "Ah, Mr. Thorton. We meet again." "Yeah, I know that whole Stalingrad thing wasn't the best time, but..." "Think nothing of it. The warlord's cache was enough to recoup my losses. Let us call it, what do you say, a wash." So, you know, still basically starting the conversation in a fresh, neutral state such that paling around and bottle-smashing are both equally sensible outcomes, but still referencing the "I've saved the world once already, we've met, let's get on with it" nature of the Veteran run.

I've begun my veteran play through specialising in shotguns and martial arts and giving as many Aggressive answers as possible. rear end in a top hat Thornton is awesome and charging through the levels doing the flying kick thing then blowing away bad guys is the best thing after sneaking around taking my time being careful and precise. What's this about being able to do everything in the mansion? Is it just an option when you get there?
