Strapping Young Lad's discography is a good place to begin, since it's the most "metal". Then you've got his solo stuff (under his own name) which is a little more varied. Definitely make time to listen to Ziltoid the Omniscient before digging into the Devin Townsend Project stuff!

Defiant Sally posted:I've never really listened to most of Devin Townsends stuff, and I know there's a lot. Wheres a good place to start? It really depends on what type of music you want. Devin has a really broad range that can go from really loving insane (SYL's "City" album) to mellow mood music (the "Ghost" album). Personally, my favorites are "Infinity" and "Synchestra." Both of them are definitely musical journeys with lots of variation and a hint of everything he's capable of. Not sure about the "Lulu" stuff. On one hand, I can't fault Metallica for wanting to collaborate with Lou loving Reed, but it's pretty out there. I can't really judge from the first track of the album since the rest could turn out to be crazy good, but I don't know if I could listen to a whole record of "Lou Reed Poetry Slam as portrayed by Bob Dylan. Also: guitars."

I first heard Devin Townsend through his band, Strapping Young Lad and it was all love from there. I would recommend trying the album Alien, as that's the very first one I heard and I think it is a good introduction. If you want to go into the deepend, get Deconstruction. It is his latest solo album, from which that video I posted is from. Its like musical diarrhea, very chaotic, complex, loud, obnoxious, insane and awesome. He also has some pretty mellow, melodic stuff too. Here is Skeksis, from the album Alien. I think it is fantastic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjVT0MhSNeo Bonus clip of the mighty Aftermath, live. Go to 4:34 for awesomeness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qt1-GOx-zo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qt1-GOx-zo henpod fucked around with this message at 10:06 on Sep 27, 2011 |

The new Absu album is just as good as Tara, IMO. What an incredible piece of music. Has anyone else heard it yet? Probably going to be my AOTY for 2011 unless Wintersun - Time comes out.

What the gently caress is mustaine doing to gigantour? Motorhead, loving A sweet as long as they get as long a set as megadeth. but what the gently caress is this lacuna coil/volbeat crap as the other half of the show. I guess it would be a good situation if the highschoolers there for LC and Volbeat took off once the old men took the stage, but gently caress I don't want to pay for a ticket if I'm going to skip half of the bill. Nor should people get the idea those two bands are on par with megadeth and motorhead.

Other than that, all their music is pretty boring. I think it seems that all the bands that have already done Gigantour are going to keep doing, as I doubt they can find any talented bands that want to be a part of it. Well, besides Motorhead, but come on, that's a loving fluke.

I still remember the time that I first heard Anesthesia in middle school which inspired me to pick up the bass guitar. While I never got quite as good as Cliff, I still crack a grin every time I hook up the wah pedal and distortion to my bass. I'll have a drink in his honor tonight.

Creature Lives is pretty bad though. Is that the one with the extended keyboard intro? Because I thought they were either about to cover Pink Floyd or Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner". It's not a bad album, but the lyrics are a fair bit weaker than everything before Blood Mountain. And I've seen Mastodon live enough times to know that their live vocals on this album are going to be.... probably not so good. Especially if Brent is "sick" again.

I don't necessarily agree on the lyrics, but I get your point. I mean Blood Mountain is ridiculously good, and to put that lens on everything, well yeah it's going to pale to a degree. But what I love about The Hunter is that it feels much more cohesive to me than Crack or Call of the Mastodon.

Not sure if any of you guys have heard of them before, but I happened upon a death metal band from NYC called Pyrrhon who self-released an album online earlier this year and are now getting a proper disc release. The full album is streaming online here. I'd never heard of them but saw "Gorguts worship set in NYC subways: hear Pyrrhon's new album here" on the sidebar of a page reviewing the Enslaved/Alcest show in NYC. Strongly recommended if you like: Ulcerate, Gorguts, Pavor, Deathspell Omega, Immolation, anything else in that vein, or The Red Chord.

I think I actually like the Metallica/Lou Reed song. Lars is definitely the weakest link, but I find it interesting. Reed's vocals are jarring, but I think that's exactly what he was going for, and it still sounds like they fit.
