That would make it what, 1 out of 3 popular boxing manga's?

Japanese sports manga tends to fall on the side of 'makes it to the big game, loses the big game, learns something important.'

Let's just say that Ricky is more likely to become a world champ than Ippo.

Looks like someone forgot his hardhat...
That's because Ippo's author doesn't realize he is literally going to die before he finishes it.

They'll find his body sprawled over a desk, an over-the-shoulder, mouth-wide-open shot of Ippo saying "Wow, I guess I have a long wa"

This is :smith: as gently caress because I just realized it's probably gonna go down like this 100%

Will Ippo have managed to kiss any of the girls who want his cock before the author dies is the tricky question

gimme the GOD DAMN candy

No, because Ippo is terrified of women. He may yet grow as a boxer (though that hasn't happened in a long time), but Ippo will probably never grow as a person. Taking that first step towards a real relationship requires more courage than Ippo has ever shown. Besides, even though Miyata was clearly the most important person in Ippo's life, he hasn't been all that important ever since it became clear they wouldn't ever have a rematch. So, even the homosexual route is closed.

I never get the last word, and it makes me very sad.
I'm still hoping for the end of Ippo to be the reporter lady raping Ippo, then he realizes the value of his monster cock, and he becomes the porn king of Japan.

It's about time for my once per decade ban for being a consistently terrible poster.
30 years in the future they have perfected male pregnancy, Ippo proposes to Miyata[-kun] having gotten no farther than like accidental first base with a chick in the last few decades, series end before reply.

This would be an amazing turn for the series into full on comedy and now is clearly the best course of action for him. Probably a load of puns waiting to be used since he was both a boxer and national champion

Yeah I love how everyone's so used to Ippo sucking that when a few good chapters actually come out, we can hardly even admit it might be true.

Apparently nothing says "keep your eyes open" like a face full of broken glass.

Also isn't Itagaki still working for Ippo's mother being paid in pennies and fish? He's gonna be paying for those helmets for months.

Living the Dream
The thing is I wonder if Mori has the balls to write Kimura/Aoki out of the manga and have them retire considering that like the majority of the funniest poo poo in the manga is them serving as Takamura's physical/verbal punching bags.

Spoilers: no

It's not like they'd have to stop showing up if they retired, though. Isn't one of the guys that Takamura beat the poo poo out of a few chapters ago retired?

You know I dont get this whole retirement angle. I mean theire only in their mid twenties and talking about how they are getting too old for boxing and how their bodies are failing them while most real life boxers dont retire until theire in their mid 30s. For chrissakes the two best boxers in the world, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are 32 and 34 respectively. Its a small thing but it kind of irritates me as a fan of the sport

That might be true for good boxers, but Aokimura are punching bags. They get smacked around almost as badly as Ippo does, only they don't necessarily win afterward.

All of the skilled, well-rounded boxers in HnI are people that Ippo punched the gently caress out. Itagaki's main ability is a direct connection to the speed force. It is only a matter of time before Itagaki starts running around the ring so fast he travels through time.

He might be smug and have the crazy poo poo going on but I always felt like he was tempered by that when he got beat in his debut and acted like a bitch about it only to get chewed out by everyone on the team.

I guess I always figured he was kind of scared since then to screw up and was just legit trying to be good / seemed redeemed as a character.

What irks me about Itagaki is that the author seems like he wants to set up a big fight between him and Ippo but I don't really give a gently caress. I want Ippo to fight Miyata dammit.

What I'd like is for him to get into a fight with a heavyweight that loses 80 pounds to fight him, and puts 40 of it back on the night after the weigh in. And for that person to spend the first 2 minutes of the fight hitting him so hard he no longer has the ability to use words, or control his bowels. Forever. I would like the only time we see his rapeface in the manga after that to be directly before he shits himself for comedic effect.

Actually, weight control is one of the few areas in the sport where we still haven't seen any cartoonishly superhuman feats. Unfortunately we're about due.
