nerve posted:"Lulu doesn't appeal to the masses because it is challenging for the listener. Those who don't "get it" won't make it through a whole song, let alone a whole album. If you like experimental, hosed up, trippy, proggy, heavy, monolouge, storytelling, concept, avante garde, structure raping, disturbed, experience music, then Lou Reed & Metallica's Lulu album is for you. If you don't like this side of music and prefer straight-forward songs, you won't find any here. loving masterpiece of an album. Really breaks new ground. Not just an album, it's an EXPERIENCE! Not everyone will like the album, it's not "accessable" to alot of people. It'll be challenging for most listeners with long, experimental songs. The album sounds loving crazy." That would be more believable if the music wasn't just half-assed Metallica riffs that sound like they were written for Death Magnetic and didn't make the cut, then were repeated for a long time because Lou wasn't done rambling. Lou's delivery is just abrasive, it sounds like a grandfather trying to read Slipknot lyrics while trying to keep a straight face. The album doesn't feel like what they're describing, it sounds like a really bad instance of these guys kinda doing their thing and not pulling it off. On the other hand, William Shatner's album came out last week and he's got the weird, storytelling over music thing going alright. It's almost like a new-age spoken-folk thing backed by covers of all sorts of popular songs, it's harder to get into some of the songs I know, but as long as I'm not giving it 100% attention, it's a decent listen.

Aw poo poo, dudes. I guess we don't "get it". I get it. It's an unfortunately sober metal band playing a normal song while a drunk guy mumbles whatever crap comes to his head over top. It's not hard to "get".

You know, maybe if Metallica were drunk and on coke, as opposed to just Lou Reed, it might be a pretty righteous album. ...unfortunately that's not the case.

I'm making a template for the OP to use for newbies that come in here and are like "Alright, so I never listened to any metal before, but you'll never believe what I just saw on YouTube -- Metallica. So what should I listen to next?" type people. Help me out by making suggestions (such as if we should remove the "Regions Associated:" line), filling in the blanks, and offering better music videos because I'm really only an expert on Folk Metal, Power Metal, and arguably Black Metal but that's scratchy at best. Feel free to replace videos with your own suggestion, but don't turn this into a war. I really suggest you replace videos with things that will be most accessible to the genre (this is highly subjective, but for example, I'm personally not sure that Lumsk is a good "entry" level Folk Metal band), that demonstrate the essence of the genre (i.e. Wolves in the Throne Room, although Black Metal, doesn't really fit as the flagship of Black Metal), and aren't used twice. Try to get the most popular bands, but mix it up as well: have a really "popular" band such as Dimmu Borgir and an unknown one thrown in somewhere. Feel free to add genres. Oh and again, help me fill in the blanks, I know next to nothing about Thrash and the others that are blank. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actually, go here. This link contains the post we're working on. I got tired of trying to find the edit button with a page full of videos, so I made it on a new page. For some one just getting into death metal with no real prior background I'd recommend Amon Amarth. They may not be the most innovative or whatever band but they had/have two things that helped ease me into that kind of metal. First their heavy incorporation of melody work gave my ear something to familiar to work with as I developed an appreciation for the styling of the genre. The second is far more subjective but I've found Hegg's vocals to be easily enough understandable. This made a huge difference for me when growls were new and scary and different. A few of their exemplar songs: Fate of Norms - The Pursuit of Vikings With Oden On Our Side - Runes to my Memory Versus the World - Death in Fire Though if you were to only listen to one of those I'd pick Runes to my Memory. edit: on an entirely unrelated note: holy poo poo is Lulu a terrible, terrible, terrible album. I hadn't, though it feels that your surprise comes from assuming every person in the Western world lives in America as I am getting the view that he's a bit bigger there than anywhere else. I'd heard of the Velvet Underground only through exposure to one particular radio station here mentioning their name in passing, but I don't think I've ever heard of a song of theirs and certainly didn't know names of band members. Anyway, this album is loving terrible and it's hilarious watching the fan backlash.

Can't leave Iced Earth and Blind Guardian out of power metal, oh no :o I'd also note that Power Metal features mostly clean vocals. I'm no good at genre typing or whatever, but what about symphonic metal stuff...i.e. nightwish, epica, etc? Is melodeath or gothenburg or whatever the gently caress you call it distinct from plain 'ol death metal? Also band names/albums/song titles on the youtube links like Dameius did would be awesome.

Like for a Black Metal banner, we can make the banner all black and use the writing most black metal bands use for it. Like take this: Make it say: Black Metal And make it this size: Then for Power Metal, we can do a collage of some front-men from various bands (Blind Guardian we can use Hansi, Helloween we use Andi) on the same banner with the title "Power Metal". And so forth. Stay Safe fucked around with this message at 04:14 on Oct 22, 2011 |

IRQ posted:What is "djent" anyway? For another death metal recommendation: In Flames, Dark Tranquility. Amon Amarth is part of the Stockholm death metal scene while In Flames and to a lesser but still significant extent Dark Tranquility represent and are the granddads of the Gothenburg scene. Put the two scenes together and you get the Swedish death metal experience. In general these bands share a lot in common with black metal and if you like one genre you'll probably like the other so if you like any of these recommendations then check out the black metal ones. Also to condense the djent sound profile from the djent thread: Rhythmic complexity and palm-muted riffing.[7] Eddie Kim of the Massachusetts band Deadfall has described djent as "complex poly-rhythms over solid grooves in conjunction with ethereal and ambient layer elements."[15] Another major contribution to "djent" is computerised sound. Many djent musicians, such as Misha Mansoor, started their careers in home recording using amp modelling and programmed drums. Djent Description: A progressive metal spinoff that uses digitally processed, palm-muted, and distorted guitar chords alongside virtuoso soloing and a general computerized sound. Makes frequent use of complex poly-rhythms and instrumental bands are not uncommon. "Djent" is a fictional sub-genre that somehow co-opted a lot of technical/progressive metal bands, but most of the bands who claim to be "djent" don't know how to write interesting song structures and just weedily-weedily-blooop their way through an album and that's about it. I don't give a poo poo if it sounds like a guitar note, it is still dumb as hell. You also forgot a section for Czech Republic experimental goregrind and pornogrind/cybergrind.
