You know, it's like games have their own version of umami, that 'savoriness' and character that certain foods have that others don't. In the end, it's always personal taste, but it's funny how sometimes just a few things could've utterly destroyed a game or made it great.

Imagine Devil Survivor with character development in the style of 16-bit era RPGs. Imagine System Shock 1/2 with action style of Mass Effect and NPC interaction like Deus Ex.

There are certain games I don't dare think of ways to ruin though, like Ogre Battle 64, Castlevania 4, and Shut Up And Jam Gaiden.

No, really. I'm kind of amazed at Capcom's PC porting for example, and I have to imagine most of the pressure for that comes from the U.S. side of things. There are exceptions out there (Falcom was a PC stalwart in Japan for the longest time, and you have certain indie developers like EasyGameStation who stay out of porn) but there's a definite stigma attached to the PC in Japan at this point and many developers don't want to develop for it, at all, because "PCs are for porn". Which, if you walk into the PC section of any store in Akihabara, for example, is... a hard perception to fight against. God drat.

Also keep in mind that there may be exclusivity agreements with certain console makers in place for certain games/ports. Console politics are kind of vile tbh.

This is kind of an ironic though with stuff like Project EGG (for those not familiar with it, it's kind of like the Japanese equivalent of GOG.com) taking off so much. More to the point, a lot if not most of the titles on Project EGG and the likes are hearkening back to the times where Japanese PC gaming wasn't strictly the domain of porn. The PC-98 had a ton of great games; it's almost as if when that platform died it took a lot of the non-porn Japanese PC gaming market with it. A shame too, because they made some awesome stuff back in the day. I still play old stalwarts like Xanadu and the old Koei catalog even today.

It's definitely ironic and more than a little tragic, but it's also true: when the PC-98 died as a platform in the mid-90s, literally everyone except for Falcom abandoned PCs of any stripe as a release platform save for a very minor burst of activity at the end of the 90s. These days it really is only the graybeards who can remember a time when the Japanese PC scene wasn't completely dominated by pornographic content.

I'm kind of hopeful that Project EGG and a few other things, like Capcom and Sega's PC success overseas (Sega as a publisher in particular has really been clued in to the power of the PC overseas by things like Total War, to the point that a Sonic game is getting on the PC as a launch platform) and my own Steam successes, will influence developers to take the platform more seriously, but with generally low home penetration (most Japanese use their phones as their primary internet devices, amazingly enough) and a decade-plus' worth of stigma attached, I am kind of afraid that the PC might be a dead platform in Japan for the foreseeable future.

In any case, it's known that Bioware is apparently releasing a new game at the upcoming VGAS. Another thing to consider is this page for the Ultima game series. What do these have in common?

Scroll to the bottom. Yeah. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

I've occasionally heard rumours about EA producing a new Ultima but nothing ever came of it. Apparently although EA own the brand, Richard Garriott still holds the rights to the characters so I'd imagine if they did bring back Ultima it would be in an MMO form. I don't this is going to be an Ultima though as sadly I don't think the value has much modern relevance.

I like Bioware and with the exception of DA2 I've liked most of their games and I'm usually willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but they are not the people I'd want to see making a new single player Ultima. If anyone gets the IP I would hope it would be Obsidian because they at least have to writing chops to skewer the whole virtue system and actually deal with ethical themes in these games like Origin used to. Also I wouldn't want the Bioware forums mass producing crappy fan art and threads entitled: "That Sir Dupre to you. Dupre support and romance discussion".

Xanadu Next is fairly good, if a little pedestrian. I got it when it first came out--not sure if I got a "limited edition" or something but it also came with the Project EGG versions of the two PC-Engine Xanadu games which was a really nice bonus, so it could be worth getting for that alone. Music is great though.

I just finished that indie game someone posted a few pages ago, Deadly Sin 2, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The graphics are standard rpgmaker fare but the characters and battle sprites are very well done. Music is all original and mostly pretty good, and the story is standard fantasy fare but decently written and with very little angst. What I really enjoyed about the game was the combat system and customization though. The game has a visible threat system and has a FFX style turn bar, adding an extra level of strategy. Also every character has a skill tree and they can all specialize in different ways. The "Magic Warrior" for example can be built as more of a speedy attacker or a support mage. The fun thing is that you can reset your skillpoints at every inn, allowing you to try out different things or to change your setup for a difficult fight. You can also add augments to every weapon and armor, and they do things like adding status effects to every attack (I should mention that status effects are very good in this game, they even work on bosses). Basically the game gives you a lot of broken things from the get go, but this balanced by the fact that (at least in hard difficulty) enemies can do a lot of bullshit things too, like one hitting your tank with a critical. Most random encounters can be fatal if you are just mashing attack on every enemy. Definetely reccomend this if you are looking for an old school jRPG with great costumization and a fun battle system. If you play this here is a tip: a lot of skills have INSANE bonuses at level 5, so when you hit level 25 (unlocks level 5 skills) spend some time at the inn checking out what every skill does at max level.

That was one of things I really liked about BOF4. I might could only have 4 guys out front, but I could switch front/back easily, and the guys in the back row would often still contribute. It wasn't much, but having Ershin randomly firing rocket punches from off screen really did make you feel like the whole party was involved in the fight, even if you only gave orders to 4 at a time.

That's a perfectly good length, especially for a low price. People just don't have 80 hours to spend on every game anymore. Besides, Suikoden 1 and 2 were similar lengths and are considered classics.

Yeah, this is definitely true. I hate CC, but I'd be fine if Masato Kato just rewrote the entire scenario for Chrono Trigger so Cross would actually link with it thematically. As it stands, I think Kato is a hack in that regard, and Yuji Hori is probably why CT is such a solid game.

Cross' themes and ideas fascinate me (well, some of them anyway) but I just really think it sucks and this post is definetly a good summation of 'why'

Chrono Cross pissed me off because it wasnt even like a clever subversion of CT, just an outright attack. CT was about the importance of one person, and how an individual can change the world if they really try, even though it's hard, because while they can sometimes be blinded by greed, people want to be good deep down. Chrono Cross is supposed to make you feel bad for saving the future, because all humans are awful racists and you should hate being one. And rather than self-determination, you are getting played by somebody the entire game.

I've talked about it with a friend the past few days. I can admit that back upon its release the backlash I felt gave Chrono Cross its due criticism... but for all the wrong reasons. The 40+ party member thing was born from a similarly terrible idea of "just team up with any NPC you can talk to" or something.

It's really not a good game even if you remove that connection. Its relationship to CT just exacerbates/muddles due criticism. Will have to elaborate later, but I've heard that statement before and it just puts a huge hole in the game's plot. Chrono Cross can only occur if Trigger does.

well then forget the plot for the most part, because you wouldn't have to change or remove much at all to have them be unrelated games. Aside from that it's very good. Stunning graphics, art direction and music for the time, it's very well paced, battle system is interesting and engaging and there are a lot of cool ideas and places. And it's fun to play.

Feel free to elaborate on those, as I'm gonna need to see your reasoning on well paced. I think the game has great music and art (sans character design). But pacing? The idea it can occur without CT? If Schala doesn't disappear DURING Chrono Trigger, no time storm, no Lynx, no Kid, no need to heal the dimensions because Crono and crew would have never damaged the time stream in the first place.

The plot could have had the CT elements removed without totally wrecking the story, it would have just required a lot more exposition as it couldn't rely on prior knowledge to really convey the full impact of the time fuckery to the player.

That being said, the game wouldn't necessarily be loved more without the CT links but it would be hated a lot less. There are some big flaws with some aspects of the game, 44 playable characters being the most egregious.... and even then, what pissed me off the most about all those characters was the severe lack of awesome combos to exploit. I went into CC expecting every combination of at least the low-level techs to have some neato effect, a la CT. I will admit I did enjoy the battles, though. It was fun and some fights could be very strategic.

On a coincidental note, I'm packing my stuff to get ready for a move and I came across a CC strat guide. I didn't actually buy the guide - the guy at EB gave it to me when I bought a used copy of CC, saying he didn't forsee anyone ever wanting to buy it. The hate was so fresh back then...

yeah, essentially that. For most of the game it's not particularly obvious or apparent that CC and CT are related - the game even takes place in a location that doesn't exist in CT. There are few recurring characters as well. It could easily take place in an entirely different universe with the backstory changed a little bit and shown more to the player.
