It does work that way in a lot of cars now. I know my Audi A4 has it, as do apparently a lot of Nissan cars as an option.

For the A4 you can get a Manual or CVT car. Though the 'manual' mode for my A4 does have fake gears, all 7 of them, though when you're in automatic mode it seems to 'shift' gears nonetheless.

drat, I drove one of these and was wondering why on earth there were so many gears. It all makes sense now! I remember thinking something was off with the RPM/power/etc but the concept of a fake gearbox never entered my mind..

I remember seeing in Forza 3, people had Datsuns that they were bringing into drag races that beat absolutely everything. Something like that, that shouldn't belong in a drag race, and it causes the racing sim nerds to lose their poo poo over it.

I'm getting frustrated with how terrible I am. Just ONCE I would like to win an online race.

I have bought and changed-up SO MANY B-Class rides, and the best I have ever mustered is a 3rd place finish, running almost perfect laps and getting involved in no scrapes.

Even in that race, two people just blasted ahead like they were in A or S class cars.

So I've tried cars that handle decent with stock tires and no handling upgrades, dumped everything into hp, and still can't even come close to competing for a win.

I've tried all engine upgrades plus a race transmission and differential so I can make the car top out right at the end of the longest straight on a particular track.

I'm guessing in order to compete you have to actually really be able to fine-tune a car? Is there any guide out there for dummies like me?

I don't mind losing a lot. But I would at least like to be able to compete for a win. It's not very fun when I know from the start I have no chance in hell to ever finish first.

If you aren't already, use manual w/clutch for the improved shift times. I race with LLJK pretty much every night and only win when none of the good players are on. Even when the PI numbers are even across the board you can still tell who actually knows how to tune a car. I would say knowing what you're doing with your dampers and roll bars are just as if not more important that maximizing horsepower.

I can't make a suggestion for B class, but after my first few races online I realized that I needed to completely change my tuning strategy. Maximizing wheel upgrades only helps in A+ where the cars have lots of horsepower. For classes F through C it seems and you really need to focus on horsepower before upgrading tires, if at all. B is probably more of a middle-ground. After I went back switched my tires for engine upgrades on my lower class cars, I instantly jumped into at least competing for the top 5. I still suck and don't win, but at least I feel competitive.

Not really. Tuning is certainly a good thing, but it's not going to be the difference between first and last place. It matters a lot more in the real world where everyone is a hardcore professional and can take advantage of shaving thousandths of a second off their corners. In the amateur world that is Forza, races are won by seconds, not by fractions of a second.

If you watch replays you'll notice that the winners always have one thing in common.. they don't mess up. This isn't because they have some secret tuning setup, it's because they know the racing line. Sliding around every corner with shrieking tires may feel faster, but I guarantee you it's not.

The "secret" to consistently winning Forza races is picking balanced upgrades, not choosing a dog of a car, and knowing the track well.

I'd say your best bet would be to go race a ghost that is high ranking on the leaderboards without the use of a cheater car. Follow their line and see how they're taking corners faster than you.

xzzy posted:

What he said ^

My ethic when it comes to Forza is that your tyres can only put down 100% of their grip, you need to distribute that 100% between braking, accelerating and cornering. If you exceed the 100% you're going to lose grip and it's going to slow you down.

I'm not disagreeing with you, obviously following the racing line makes a big difference, but when somebody knows how to tune their car they are going to be experiencing less over/understeer through the corners and be better able to maintain speed throughout. Races aren't being won by fractions of a second but you can easily pull ahead a couple of seconds in a race if you have your poo poo properly tuned.

I will have to disagree. I win quite a lot, but aside from my Tesla (which had to be tuned just to be driveable), all of my cars are just upgraded; I cannot tune anything past FWD cars in lower classes without making the car worse. I'd say knowing the track and car are way, way more important. As an example, my NSX-R GT has the race suspension and all, but I haven't touched anything because I have no idea what to do. Yet despite this, it's about as fast as my Tesla while being more balanced, and I routinely win with it.

Another piece of advice I can give is to find a car type that you're comfortable with. I personally do leagues better in anything mid-engined RWD, for instance, because those kinds of cars suit my driving style quite a bit. YMMV, though, and they do have the disadvantage of being difficult to reign back in if you start to lose it.

I just think new drivers put too much emphasis on tuning. They see it as this undiscovered frontier where those 'in the know' are using their secret knowledge to dominate races, when that's not the case. They would probably dominate even with a poorly tuned car.

I guess a good way to test this is do some stock races, and watch if the same patterns develop.

We already do a good number of stock races, and you're correct, essentially it's the same people coming in first and last, so there's certainly a mix of driving well and a proper tune. I suppose my anecdotal evidence is the RS500 I had HumpDumper tune for me. My tuned version was the same PI as his, I drive the same line when I'm test driving my cars, but he had practically eliminated the oversteer/understeer that was occurring and the car grips like it's glued to the road now, so at least in that specific scenario it seems to me like tuning can be a world of difference.

I think we can agree it's a balance of driving skills and a decent tune, but providing everybody knows to follow the proper route I think you can agree a tune can make a huge impact

This looks like a good time to pimp the Showroom Stock Miata race from the last page.
It's coming up at 7PST / 8MST / 9CST / 10EST tonight.

I'll post 3 tunes with all of the allowed upgrades to my Storefront for those that don't want to muck about with it.
I used the Forza4 Tuning Spreadsheet, and I think it came out reasonably balanced.

I've used that same spreadsheet on several of my other cars in the last few days, and they've all come out the other side of it being MUCH more driveable, with less of (whatever happened to bothering me about it), with the exception of the Bel-Air, which swapped piglike understeer for a moderate amount of power-on oversteer. It seems like a pretty good starting place to me, and it's well supported with reference data.

'Spec Miata Aero' is ForzaTuned with Aero on it with max downforce (100#) set.
'Spec Miata' is ForzaTuned with no Aero.
SpecMiata is upgraded to the limit, with no adjustments.

I'll also gift it if you want one to muck about with the tune, with the caveat that Transmission and Spring adjustments aren't allowed, and there are limits on camber.

Shoot me (JabsTheGoon) a FR and a message to remind me that you want the tune.
