Michael Wolf seems to use Google Street View during his free time, as he has almost 5 projects dedicated to it. It's an interesting concept though. It's a slight twist to street photography, only a picture has been taken of a whole city and it's up to you to find the interesting events.

I'm not seeing what you describe, but I've had the interest in doing an end-to-end pano of an entire flight from one city to another. I've given it some thought but it just seems technically difficult given altitude changes and loss of field of view - let alone the ability to work on so many drat photos.

A certainly unique basketball shot:

quote:

AP photographer Mark Terrill made of one the most visually stunning basketball pictures I’ve seen in quite awhile. He shot this during the Carrier Classic NCAA college basketball game aboard USS Carl Vinson.

He used a Nikon D3 with a 24-70mm lens set at 24mm. The exposure was 1/800 @ f4 rated at 2000iso. Mark added no additional lighting to the scene. He simply took advantage of the television lights installed around the court on the carrier deck and mother nature’s own light show.

Yeah, unfortunately that was the best I could find without a bunch of AP watermarks all over it.

My nephew shot this of his mom and step-dad. If not for my other nephew, his little brother darting out in front it would be pretty boring.

That is a crazy shot, but where are all the lights? It's wrapping from all around this side but you can't see any on the other end really.

I was in Airzona last week, and saw this magazine in a grocery store, with a "50 greatest photos ever" edition:

http://www.arizhwys.com/

I don't know why the highways in Arizona need their own magazine, but I'm glad it does because the pictures they publish are pretty spectacular.

Unfortunately, it appears you have to pay $4 for an online version. So you'll just have to trust me unless you feel like paying a few bucks.

I think this is a super awesome shot of a bride. The only thing I don't like are the flowers coming out of her head, but given how striking the entire image is... I still love it. Dress is interesting too.

It is a pretty striking shot, but it's got that overprocessed feel where she doesn't look quite real anymore.

lol hey there buddy
If that's really from a wedding and I had taken that picture, I would poo poo my pants for two reasons:

#1 That shot looks great.
#2 The bride could be a model and is wearing a bitching dress and these photos are going to add so much advertising value to my portfolio.

That said, I'm pretty sure it is from a photoshoot and not a real wedding.

Anton Kusters got the opportunity to photograph a Yakuza family.

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/fa20110908a1.html

I’m in the front seat, riding with Soichiro in his car on his way to Shinjuku. “One cuts off one’s finger to make a point”, Soichiro explains while driving. “Usually to show the sincerity of an apology after doing something wrong.”

“You cut off a single digit of your own finger in a ceremonial way, while facing your boss, and then you present the severed finger on a folded napkin to him. It reinforces the power of your apology. It shows that you’re serious about what you’re saying.”

Kusters' photographs are very attractive and high quality, but offer a very sterotypical view. It's safe; I demand more from someone who makes such a big deal about it being a "personal account of life inside an inaccessible subculture."

I just realized that I need more "favorite" photographers to follow and study. Certainly some good ones in this thread to pick up on.

I'll also share a recent image from a member of our local photo group, this is Nuby DeLeon's Film Noir Fight Scene:

All of his stuff is awesome, and the way he works is really admirable. He shows up with an idea in mind, sets up his lights, and gets the job done in a few minutes. If something's off, he knows exactly what to go for, and he's just been real helpful to me. If you're curious about the image above, there's a breakdown of it, including lighting diagram HERE.

He's got some good techincal stuff, but the cop's posing in that image is really awkward/sloppy given the effort that went into lighting, costumes et al. Try throwing a punch and observe where the weight and momentum leave your head and back arm.

Any of you NYC dorkroomers need to do the following 2 things before the end of the year

- 75 Years of Life Magazine at the Leica Gallery

- Merry Christmas from Lee Friedlander at Janet Borden

Both galleries are close to SOHO, a few blocks from each other and also free entry. The Lee Friedlander one makes never want to put my camera down. The Lecia one is worth it just for the shot of Rita Hayworth and everything by Alfred Eisenstaedt.
