So it looks like my phone's charging port is going, I got it pretty much a little over exactly a year ago so I assume it's not under warranty anymore. Who should I contact? I got insurance on the thing, but I assume that going to cost me a bunch to get a replacement rather than just get the thing repaired somehow.

They do when they're good, or better than expected. Generally though even better than expected numbers aren't publicized if the difference is 80k vs 20k, or something like that...especially when Cupertino's got numbers in the seven digits for devices on launch days. Makes VZN/ATT's boasts for their other handsets seem trite.

The RAZR definitely has a pretty effective ad campaign, as goofy as it is. I would assume the RAZR has a durability advantage since it is mostly metal but I've always had Motorola devices (OG Droid and Droid X) and I see nothing wrong with the Galaxy Nexus compared to those. The Galaxy Nexus has a better screen as it's a 720p screen using the same technology as the RAZR which is only QHD with a lower pixel density. I assume that battery life is pretty similar between the two but it's a little early to accurately judge the battery life of the Nexus. The Nexus also comes with the latest version of Android which is supposed to perform better and will receive faster updates but I'm not sure how much you care about that stuff.

Besides asking, I don't think so. Have you tried the usual factory reset or flashing a different ROM to see if it will fix your phone? You can always buy a used Incredible or Samsung Fascinate on eBay or Craigslist for ~$100 if your Inc does have a problem you can't fix. The upside of this is the Nexus will likely be quite a bit cheaper by April and/or something else really compelling may be out by then.

Yeah, fair enough. If it comes down to it and you're on a family plan, you can add a dumbphone line for $10 a month for 2 years and steal the upgrade, bringing the Nexus down to $550. Hopefully someone else has a better idea. I think some people were getting their upgrades bumped up, but it seemed pretty random and not a result of asking or anything obvious.

I am a little confused on upgrades:

my family plan has two phones, an incredible and a Droid (the original). My Incredible has a discounted update as well as an "upgrade available 2/27/2012". The Droid has the same upgrade date but upgrade at full price under it.

Does this mean I have a discount on the incredible's upgrade now, but it will be free or more reduced later? Will that apply for the droid or will the droid get a smaller/no discount?

Just got a brand new galaxy nexus and it has been an amazing start - I accidentally gave myself unlimited data. I added discount from my employer and was trying to figure out how to tether. Coming from an iPhone it seemed like an amazing idea, until I realised that you gotta pony up more money for the hotspot feature. I tried to do it online through the change features page, but it gave me an error telling me to call customer support.

However, for me the hotspot option on the page was the old $30 one, which apparently gives you unlimited data. I had no clue that the "normal" hotspot is only $20, I just saw the $24 discounted price after 20% off and asked customer support to add that, proud of myself for saving a whopping $6*. After the feature was added I refreshed my account saw that the 4gb limit became unlimited, and googling a bit told me what happened... I doubt I'll use much more than a few gb, but it's definitely nice and lets me be a bit more liberal with youtube videos.

I have no clue if the $30 option showed up because of my work discount or was it just there normally, but it's definitely worth a check if anyone is interested.

*I later learned that you can root and get free tether, but that precludes me from getting support from our poor overworked IT folks.

To clarify,

Both New Every Two (additional $$$) and Annual (early) Upgrade were retired 01/17/2011 so you only get to use them if you haven't renewed contracts on that line before that date.

Annual Upgrade lets you get the 2 year pricing at month 12 of a 2 year contract instead of the normal upgrade time at month 20. Annual Upgrade has a $20 fee to use via phone or store location but is waived if the order is done via website. You do not get to combine Annual and New Every Two.

To qualify for New Every Two the line must be on a plan $34.99 or higher for 20 months.

To qualify for Annual Upgrade the line must be on a plan $50.00 or higher for 12 months.

I guess the point is moot because I am really in no hurry for a new phone. Hopefully there will be a nice price drop on the Gnex to correspond with my two year upgrade. I am getting a Galaxy Nexus for Christmas. This is just a slightly early 2 year upgrade to my existing line with a Droid X.

So - we went to the store, paid for the galaxy nexus, activated it. Obviously, the Droid X no longer has service.

In the interest of having something to open on Christmas, I must put the nexus back into its box, and it'll get wrapped. :ohdear:

So, in the CDMA days, you could just *228 and switch to another phone. But LTE has sim cards. Seems like it won't work now...

What do I do here? Is there a way I can switch back to the Droid X, and then re-activate the Nexus on christmas? I can also deal with having no phone for the rest of the week if necessary - might be a nice break anyway!

The display and touch screen keyboard have been a nice change. One issue I have been having is that 4g reception at my home is spotty/nonexistent. This shouldn't be super surprising since my home had always been gotten terrible reception for some reason; I used to have to go into the street to get a signal back on at&t. According to Verizon's 4g map my location should be a sea of 4g;is there any such thing as a 4g range extender or it a different/too expensive technology? I can use Wifi but our home network had signal issues as well. Not a deal breaker or anything by any means of course.
