I'm just getting into mixing and I've gotten three mixes up on my soundcloud in the last week. They aren't anywhere near technically perfect but I'm happy enough with them to share and would appreciate some feedback. Mostly trance and progressive from the last year with some dubstep and electro in the Thursday one. They are all at https://www.soundcloud.com/vidmaster

I recently did a new mix. I am trying to find out where the limits are for blending genres and generally working on various aspects of track selection. The reason i am saying this is that it will certainly not be for everyone, and it may not work at times (even though i try hard to make it work). In the end, its all in the spirit of learning and making something fresh, but it takes time and work, but i think iam on the right track alot of the tracks are edited, run 2-3 at the same time, features different elements and sound bites etc. http://soundcloud.com/dopebag/bjorn-vikingbeats-004 House/bass/random - around 35min tracklist: Oliver $ - Granulated Soul Martyn - We Are You In The Future Larse - So Long Tiger Stripes - Trip Me Kraak & Smaak ft. A cursory comment is that the transitions are really sudden. Usually cuts (transitioning from one song to another instantly or near-instantly) is usually used with dubstep or drum and bass, sometimes breaks (which isnt to say it can't be used elsewhere). Do you know how to beatmatch yet? For starters try to layer the songs. Practice that for a while. Do you know about phrases? mitztronic fucked around with this message at 01:08 on Jan 21, 2012 |

Sorry, no PMs, but if you like you can email melikeblazers11@hotmail.com You're right, this isn't exactly the genre to being doing instant cuts with. Really the only transition I'm proud of is from 22:00-22:40 because I actually counted back like 32 measures to get that first bass note to play right on time (I think that's what phrasing is, right?). I also liked my last transition from Indigo to Now We Are, but the one in between, from It's A Crime to Indigo, sounds like a shoebox full of nails being tossed around. vv From what I can tell beatmatching in a basic sense is matching some part of the percussion (like the hi-hat) to the other track and adjusting the tempo of the incoming track to match. In any case I will definitely keep practicing layering songs. Jedi Knight Luigi fucked around with this message at 19:45 on Jan 21, 2012 |

Usually you want to match the first downbeat of a phrase on your first track to the first downbeat of a phrase on your second track, so you've got the right idea. It's all about counting. You've got an ear for good tracks, and that's a good start.

Can't buy good taste, but you seem alright in that department In regards to mixing, just play around with one type of track transition in a variety of songs until you feel comfortable with it. For example, one afternoon do nothing but chorus slams, with a variety of different tracks and see which tracks it works in and which tracks it doesn't. Another day do nothing but blend verses together. Another do nothing but blend breakdowns. Come hang out in the DJ thread! Don't play around with your BPM in the middle of the tune playing.

The "slow your roll" set that was posted up and quoted again recently does this, it starts at about 100 bpm and ends at 115 over the course of a few hours thanks to gradual increases per track

Yeah it's fine to do as long as its not annoyingly obvious. It takes a while to find the perfect rate of change. Just listen to what your ears tell you. And use pitch lock if you have it.

I almost never use pitch lock, and I would never use it if I'm slowing a tune down. It distorts the sound too much and the kick never sounds clean. The bottom line is to just use your ears and figure out what sounds right though.
