I'm just getting into mixing and I've gotten three mixes up on my soundcloud in the last week. They aren't anywhere near technically perfect but I'm happy enough with them to share and would appreciate some feedback. Mostly trance and progressive from the last year with some dubstep and electro in the Thursday one. They are all at https://www.soundcloud.com/vidmaster

Sweden steals our beer!
I recently did a new mix. I am trying to find out where the limits are for blending genres and generally working on various aspects of track selection. The reason i am saying this is that it will certainly not be for everyone, and it may not work at times (even though i try hard to make it work). In the end, its all in the spirit of learning and making something fresh, but it takes time and work, but i think iam on the right track :)

alot of the tracks are edited, run 2-3 at the same time, features different elements and sound bites etc.

Surprisingly good reception; I was worried as gently caress but people were drinking and dancing so all was well. I can't wait to do it again.

Oh yeah, I know the sample usage is cheesy as Hell.

What equipment do you use? I will go through and give you play by play suggestions if you want. Do you have PMs? :)

A cursory comment is that the transitions are really sudden. Usually cuts (transitioning from one song to another instantly or near-instantly) is usually used with dubstep or drum and bass, sometimes breaks (which isnt to say it can't be used elsewhere). Do you know how to beatmatch yet? For starters try to layer the songs. Practice that for a while. Do you know about phrases?

Sorry, no PMs, but if you like you can email melikeblazers11@hotmail.com

You're right, this isn't exactly the genre to being doing instant cuts with. Really the only transition I'm proud of is from 22:00-22:40 because I actually counted back like 32 measures to get that first bass note to play right on time (I think that's what phrasing is, right?). I also liked my last transition from Indigo to Now We Are, but the one in between, from It's A Crime to Indigo, sounds like a shoebox full of nails being tossed around. v:shobon:v

From what I can tell beatmatching in a basic sense is matching some part of the percussion (like the hi-hat) to the other track and adjusting the tempo of the incoming track to match. In any case I will definitely keep practicing layering songs. :)

Just finished listening to this and overall I dig it, the 6 minute mark to the 6:45 mark seemed kind of off to me. Not the beat mind you, maybe the levels. Like the second track came in too loud? Really like the selection though and the overall flow of this. :)

You're right, this isn't exactly the genre to being doing instant cuts with. Really the only transition I'm proud of is from 22:00-22:40 because I actually counted back like 32 measures to get that first bass note to play right on time

What you did there is EXACTLY what Mitz was talking about. Usually you want to match the first downbeat of a phrase on your first track to the first downbeat of a phrase on your second track, so you've got the right idea. It's all about counting. You've got an ear for good tracks, and that's a good start. :)

Man i'm listening to this and thinking to myself at one point "this sounds like it could have been in a metroid game" then lo and behold phendrana comes on.

still listening through it but I'm enjoying it a lot, it's perfect for the end of a long day.

I like this a lot. It's a pleasant departure from the type of stuff that I usually listen to at work.

So goons, do I have an ear for this? Try not to pay attention to the atrocities made with filters and effects during the songs, I just wanna know how my transitions worked out.

Mixing is practice, track selection is the art. Can't buy good taste, but you seem alright in that department :)

In regards to mixing, just play around with one type of track transition in a variety of songs until you feel comfortable with it. For example, one afternoon do nothing but chorus slams, with a variety of different tracks and see which tracks it works in and which tracks it doesn't. Another day do nothing but blend verses together. Another do nothing but blend breakdowns. Come hang out in the DJ thread!

Don't play around with your BPM in the middle of the tune playing.

I can't count the amount of times DJs have done this in various clubs I've been to :smithicide:

Is it ok to do this gradually, or is that also a no-no? Like can I go from 132-134 over the course of an 8 minute trance tune if I'm doing it very slowly throughout the whole thing?

I do this all the time, especially in longer sets where I'm starting slow and working the tempo up over the course of the night.

The "slow your roll" set that was posted up and quoted again recently does this, it starts at about 100 bpm and ends at 115 over the course of a few hours thanks to gradual increases per track

Yeah it's fine to do as long as its not annoyingly obvious. It takes a while to find the perfect rate of change. Just listen to what your ears tell you.

And use pitch lock if you have it.

I don't think this is necessarily true, especially if the tune isn't melodic. I almost never use pitch lock, and I would never use it if I'm slowing a tune down. It distorts the sound too much and the kick never sounds clean. The bottom line is to just use your ears and figure out what sounds right though.

Could someone explain this to me? I've had my gear about 10 months now and I bought that 'How to DJ properly' book which has taught me a fair bit but obviously I'm still learning.

I also figure I need some form of effects unit to play about with just to add a wee bit of spice to the stuff I do, what's the consensus on something like the Korg Kaoss Pad?
