Feature Writer/Storyteller (Full-Time Position)

PN communicates primarily through the written word. So we’re looking for an experienced writer and storyteller to help us tell the amazing stories of our company, our team, and our clients. Requirements for the position include all of the following:

Experience working for a major print (magazine/news) publication
Portfolio of 10 or more articles in a major print publication
Portfolio of 10 or more articles in a major online publication

quote:

20+ articles to attach to a writing application? That's pretty loving brutal! I feel guilty when I attach so much as 5 to a writing job cover letter + resume.

Especially when you usually work in the dead tree editions or for major corporations that move your archived web stuff into an archive behind a pay wall. If you get fewer than 40 applications for this job I'll be shocked -- and no one is reading 400 articles before starting interviews, which is half of what you appear to be asking for.

Chicago OR REMOTE

My company is looking for a software developer that does ASP.net stuff with Visual Studio. I'm just the art director, but I can tell you that C# and like SQL. We pay well and offer great benefits. Our main office is on the Northwest Side of Chicago, within sight of the Jefferson Park Blue Line and Metra stops.

Disclaimer: The restaurants around here are not that great.

IMPORTANT STUFF: We have a gym and a bar (not in the same place), and the bar is stocked with good spirits and we have 2 IPAs and a lager on tap at all times. Sorry stout guys, we have not yet gotten around to running a nitrogen tank.

We are pretty laid back, but we are dedicated to our clients, and we work hard. Most of the people here are pretty great, except for Steve. That guy's a dick.

my gmail is deathpansy or you could send me a PM

Experience:
My CS experience is mostly academic at this point. I have supported myself the last 5 years by playing online poker while living abroad. While people may prefer to see work experience, I can assure you what I did is very telling of competence. Most people who play poker lose money in the long run (I heard 85% and that sounds about right), while I was able make a decent living off of it. The poker world is too narrow to plan a future on, and too volatile right now with government crackdowns, so I've decided it's time to move on.

Just some friendly advice here: I wouldn't try to defend a half-decade jaunt into gambling that is now untenable because of law enforcement as "very telling of competence". Instead it sounds telling of risky decision-making and ethical equivocation. That's not the impression you want to give potential employers, and it certainly doesn't merit more than a passing mention as a hobby on your CV (unless you're applying to work for an online poker website, or something). Also, don't diminish your CS experience as "mostly academic". Instead, try to embellish it more with project examples and the like, e.g. if you've ever created a website for yourself or a friend you can go ahead and call yourself a "Freelance Web Developer" and immediately sound more credible.

Both are working with me for a small non-profit in Austin, Tx. Was just given the go-ahead to start looking through what sort of connections I had. We're a pretty easygoing shop to work for, there aren't going to be any crunch times or things like that. No telecommute, no relocation services. If you're coming from a ways away, I can work with you on long-distance interviewing, but local is best.

Programmer
technologies: Ruby on Rails, Javascript, learn on the job
experience: Entry to Senior level
compensation: DOE (and capability)

This is a contract-to-hire position. We don't require that you have RoR or much Javascript experience, but compensation will be more if you do. Language is language, though, and if you can program, then I can teach you Rails/Javascript. We run as an agile team, and have a significant icebox, so you should be ready to jump in and start learning right away.

If you can do some HTML/CSS or image editing, that would be something in your favor, but keep in mind this is a programmer job, not web design.

Project Manager

I honestly don't know much about this position, to be honest, as it's a need that only recently has come up (after losing the one in the office to a downtown job). The project manager will be working with the network engineers and the software team to act as a go-between with the teams and the company's management. We're not looking for a documentation or deadline nazi, but instead a team member that can help make us more efficient and represent us in the overall company.

If you know some stuff about networking, that would be a benefit, as you'll be mostly working with the Network Engineers, but that's not necessary.

PM or email me at kayakyakr@gmail.com if you have any interest.

I was the president of my university's Model United Nations for two years which involved planning meetings and travel, acquiring and managing a budget, and recruiting new team members. I have one of the highest rates of new membership conversions at my retail job so I'm a decent salesperson, and I work very well with people whose first language is not English. I also have a lot of travel experience in Asia and I can speak, read, and write Mandarin Chinese at an intermediate level.

Skills: Research (internet and academic journals), Mandarin Chinese, Microsoft Office Suite, Windows and Mac operating systems, I can build a computer, and I can do a bit of HTML, CSS, and Python.

Looking for: Ideally a position involving research related to either Asia, politics, or science/technology. I love researching and writing and I ultimately want a career in academia. Definitely open to other opportunities, though.

Job Opening for a Big 4 consulting firm

I work for a Big 4 consulting firm, and we have a lot of experienced-hire tech openings. Sorry, freshly-graduated applicants can't apply to these roles. I'm not a recruiter, but the job market sucks and I keep seeing open positions... So if your resume is good and you'd be a good fit, I can refer you internally for a position.

It's a big four firm, so hopefully that tells you what you need to know about the work, pace, salary, etc. But if it doesn't, send me your resume and we can talk more.

We have some specific openings to fill for Radford, VA (listed below), but if you have strong technical skills and think Big 4 technology consulting is right for you, there are a lot of openings around the Washington, DC / Northern VA area.

Radford, VA:
  • SAN Administrator
  • .NET Developer
  • Cisco Switch Specialist
  • Citrix Administrator
  • Oracle DBA / RAC Specialist
  • UNIX Administrator
  • Windows Administrator

Shoot me a PM or reply in this thread if interested / qualified.
