So i went to see the 1999 miata and though it was a nice and well taken care of car I didn't really like the way the headlights look. I felt like an NA miata would probably be a better fit.

So a couple of hours later lo and behold this one shows up

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/cto/2858853254.html

Seems really good and with one owner should be well taken care of.

Will there be any issues with choosing an NA miata over an NB?

I've never driven an NB, but I have a 96 very similar to that one there and I love it. Bought it in 09 with 128k miles for $3450. Mine has a few dings here and there, and the paint didn't look near that good then, so that seems like a fair price. Definitely worth a look at least.

That 1997 is a base model, so no headrest speakers or LSD.

There are some significant differences between the NA and NB in terms of how it rides. The NB is way more liveable and feels solid whereas the NA will communication every single imperfection on the road. There was chassis bracing added during the model change, and the front subframe is different, but most of the parts are interchangeable. There's a mnet adage talking about how the NB is the better car, but the NA is the better Miata, but they are a bunch of greybeards trying to relive their MGB days.

I wonder if feeling the road is going to be a problem since my last two cars were a volvo and a bmw.

I was not aware that MB's had headrest speakers. And from what I've read about LSD I guess its something good so the car doesn't spin out?

Might have to reconsider that 99 then, I figure since this car is going to last me a while I should get something that is comfortable to drive.

Yeah, you should drive both models to see which you prefer, but the NB is generally easier to live with. The standard glass rear window makes a big difference, just by itself.

Also, tires will be a huge factor for both noise and comfort, so keep that in mind. And take your test drives with the top up.

I worked in a Miata specific shop for a few years and drove tons of Miatas, NA and NB, turbo'd, SC'd, ITB'd, etc.

The NB is more refined, a better daily driver and just feels more solid overall. I always said in comparison to the NA the NB feels like it has a fixed roof due to all the extra bracing underneath. The NA feels more "raw" and is more fun pushing to the limit. Looks are subjective obviously, I like them both, but the NA has more of a classic styling that I like a bit more.

I'd take either depending on what deals are to be had. I'm going to be looking at a one owner '01 NB for $3500 here pretty soon, it looks immaculate in the pictures, but I'm still crossing my fingers. This could be a HUGE steal.

It's designed to have more mass market appeal and feels designed by a committee of market experts instead of a team of engineers. Crash safety and increased luxury standards (I'm not interested in a car with power windows) help ruin it as well.

(I've driven and autocrossed all three generations. Own a NA)

Also installed some 20mm spacers. The rings they came with fit the stock wheel bore perfectly, but not my 6UL's. Need to find some bigger rings. Eventually I'll probably dump them and sell my 15x8s and get 15x9s.

All the weather reports I saw this morning were predicting wayyyy less than the 4-5 inches or so we ended up getting and it was hovering around 40 degrees all day, and I thought nothing would actually stick to the road at those temperatures. (Also I'm retarded)

All winter I was planning on getting tires on-the-spot whenever the bad weather showed up but it didn't snow until today, with spring around the corner.

Just buy a set and keep them around when you need them. It sucked having my WS70 Blizzaks in the garage all winter (haven't used them yet) but it's better than not having them!

I have the 93LE (modified suspension, bilstein shocks). The ride is very hard and unforgiving. I cannot imagine daily driving it where I live because of very poor roads. But there are plenty of places that have great roads and I'd not think twice about daily driving a car like it. So I guess I'm saying the quality of the roads where you live should influence a DD decision.

Any guesses on what I can ask for my miata in the next few months? I'm not dead set on selling it but being a new dad pretty much limits any chance of getting to use it on a regular basis. Between that and my motorcycle I'd rather keep the bike, takes up less room anyway.

I can afford to keep it but I'm looking to buy a nicer truck this year to replace two of our other vehicles so the extra money would be nice.

'91, 127k, 5spd, sliver.

+ Timing belt done, all fluids changed, valve seals redone by the PO in the last 3k miles. Yea, I've had it two years and only drove it 3k.
+ Paint was resprayed. Not a great job by any means but looks great from 10'
+ No rust. DE car, clean clean clean underneath. Should be a big selling point here in PA.
+ Garaged while I've had it, hasn't even seen much rain.

- Top needs replaced. I have a cheap economy top (plastic window)/rain rail/tension cables to put on it when I grow balls big enough.
- Motorized antenna not working, thought I have a fixed antenna for it. I haven't put it on because I don't care that much.
- Master/slave cylinder may be leaking. I've only had to fill the reservoir up twice since I've had it (from it being low), but I don't drive it that much.
- Oil leak, guessing the rear main seal. The PO replaced just about every other seal.

I was thinking of listing around $3800-4000 around spring and summer and hoping to get $3500 out of it, but I don't know if it's that likely. Anything less I'd probably rather just keep it.

I think if you get the right buyer you can get that price. Expect a lot of people haggling based on KBB but if the car really is clean, hold your ground.

I think $3000 would be on the high-end of the scale, to be honest. When there are decent NB1s on CL and whatnot knocking on $5k, it's hard to justify a 1.6L with possible shortnose issues.

IOwnCalculus
Apr 2, 2003

Except that to a lot of people the NA isn't worth that much less than a NB. Checking on CL here in Phoenix, the sub-$3k NAs tend to be basketcases (questionable at best mods, 200k+ miles, otherwise beat to poo poo) whereas the ones that would be closer to what this one sounds like are all between $3k and $4k, with a few people on the high side of $4k for newer NAs / special editions.

Ehhhhh, $3k isn't too bad but for that I'll probably keep it (I will keep it in mind, though). I'm not delusional and think it's worth top dollar or anything but in my area there are few NAs running around (especially in such good condition), and I probably only see 5 or so miatas total from our area on our local craigslist (Williamsport - about 3 hrs NW of you).

Last year there was a guy trying to unload an NA with 80k on it for something like $7500, haha.

It's probably not worth $4k, I will say that. But with the gas boom up here there is a lot of money around. I'm willing to bet most gas workers aren't looking for "girl cars" though ;)

Yeah. My '92 with a hard top and FM1.5 suspension and 90k miles wouldn't even go for 3k (although it has poor paint). It's just not worth getting rid of... you don't get enough cash out of it and the cars are still so much fun to drive.

One of the used car joints here in Leesburg has this thing listed for $2K. I'm tempted to go drive it and make an offer if it seems OK. Definitely needs a back window, and I'd guess a timing belt and water pump, at the least. And I need a second Miata like I need a hole in my head.
