Not to start a "what is art" argument, but what do you see in it? Photo is doing nothing for me, but I'm not much of a bird fan.

Michael Kenna rules, even though I'm sure he's been mentioned here before. I don't even understand how he gets those really wispy ethereal tones in the sky and stuff. Night-time long-exposure I'm sure. edit-- In the one with the clouds, obviously I know that's a long exposure with the clouds moving.

I guess the cynical answer is that he takes eleventy thousand long exposures and picks out the good ones. Great shots.

Yeah I'm not sure how he develops them or anything but some of his exposures are super long. There's a video on him out there that just shows him hanging out/sleeping in his car in the middle of the night while the shutter is open.

He's using a ridiculous shutter time with a tiny aperture. Same as the guy with the wispy people leaving the train station. Like, medium format and a low asa film. I think most awesome landscapes don't take much more than a little experimentation and a stupid amount of patience. A genuine capacity for time killing.

dukeku posted:Some sweet stuff on American Elegy from Charles Henry: Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed it. When I bought a P&S camera with the intent of going out and photographing things, my first excursions were to small Texas towns and I think the first one I ever did was to photograph an old theater. I got a copy of Keith Carter's "From Uncertain to Blue" for Christmas and I've been itchy to get out of the city and back to small towns ever since. I knew there was something to these towns, I just didn't know how to approach it. I should give it another go.

Don't blame the GIS browser, it can't exactly show you more than a site is hosting and most of those have been shrunken down to like 300px for display on blogs. Use the menu on the left to filter all but the largish ones, click on a photo you want to see and when the floating window comes up on top of the original context just right-click -> View Image without bothering to wait for it to load, your browser will load the host's source image. Maybe click a magnifying glass.
