Penguissimo posted:If you're anywhere near a Costco, you might want to check them out too. I believe they charge around the same amount as Amazon, but they usually have a deal going where you get some free accessories too (including an extended battery if I remember correctly?). Only catch it that they won't see the early upgrade either, but it sounds like you don't particularly mind waiting. I got my GNex for $219 with a mail in rebate for a free extended battery, so yeah. Do that. It rules.

So I've been using my GNex for it's first full day and I'm concerned with the signal. I left it sitting after a call, came back, and it was killing the battery searching for a signal until I moved to a different room. At that point Cell Standby was 22%. Now it's at 14% and battery's at 35% after 8h 36m. I even leave wifi on at home. Is it just the poor performance of 4.0.2 and when I put 4.0.4 it'll be fine, or do I have a bum unit? I picked it up at Costco, which is a great deal. $219 for the phone, accessory bundle (useless outside of the car/home charger), and extended battery by mail. It was interesting that I paid for the phone, then brought it back to the kiosk to get it activated. I also didn't sign the contract until that point. They also stamped my receipt, but it seems like it would be pretty easy to pay for, then leave without actually getting tied to the two year contract.

Here is my tale of purchasing a new phone today. My renewal date is in April and I've been craving either a GNex or Droid RAZR for a couple of weeks. Per advice of some of the folks in this thread I made my way to Costco to check out their deals. Sure enough they had the GNex for $219 and the RAZR for $179 with an extra battery, case and screen protector included. After bringing up my account the lady mentioned that since my upgrade date was not for another two months she could not get me the upgrade price. They also can't push through early upgrades like VZW can so I was SOL there. Leaving somewhat defeated, I decided to bop over to the VZW corp store down the road for the hell of it. Their GNex price with renewal was $299 but they had the Droid RAZR Maxx available for the same price. While I was enamored with the GNex's huge screen, the RAZR Maxx's form factor, signal strength, and battery life ended up selling me on it. As an added bonus I also got $50 off the price of the phone thanks to a corporate discount from a previous employer. I get my phone in two days, which happens to be my birthday! tl;dr Landed a Droid RAZR Maxxxxxxxx for $250 (w/ 2-year) at VZW corp store thanks to corporate discount! Costco will not sell you an upgrade-priced phone before your renewal date.

Amazon wireless has the Galaxy Nexus for 99.99$ for new lines again. Not sure if this is news or not, but I had bought it at 99 a month ago, and the price went back up a few days after.

Don Lapre posted:AT&T's hspa+ has lots of potential bandwidth but i havn't seen anyone actually get more than they did with their 7.2mbps network. AT&T runs QoS on their network, and officially, although it's hard to find on their site, they promise 6mbps on their HSPA+ network. It used to be that you could take your sim and put it into a unlocked phone and you could see better performance, like 10-20mbps depending on the time of day as long as you configured your phone for the right network, but probably around a year ago they limit you to what your sim was profiled for, even if you configured it right. This explains why some reviews a few months ago was saying they couldn't get more than around 3mps because their sim originally came from a 1st gen 3g phone. You have to call and ask for a hspa+ plan to get full speed (which again is 6)

It's likely a busy airport will have microcells installed. The highest I've gotten in Wichita is 20Mbps and it's usually around 15. Still about 10 times as fast as 3G is here so I'm not complaining.

I went back and checked and it turns out it was 24Mbps and not 27Mbps, which is still great. Now I just need them to light up LTE in my area outside of Phoenix so that I can put my 4G radio to good use.

If it's pretty new, and there aren't a lot of LTE phones on the network yet, then it's perfectly reasonable, particularly if you were in close proximity to a tower. As saturation has increased around work (Ann Arbor has had LTE up and running since April-ish last year), my available speeds have slowly (but steadily) dropped. I peaked out at an average of about 24Mbit when I first got the phone, and I'm averaging about 18 these days.

I've been able to get 35mbps near my house somewhat consistently. Right now, in my office, I'm only pulling down around 8mbps. However, this area isn't well covered and I would usually be around 600kbps on EVDO.

Guys, don't forget that network speeds are measured in megaBITs, not megaBYTES. You can divide the former by roughly 10* to get the latter, and the latter is usually what your computer and/or phone reports when downloading a file. bull's EVDO figure up there translates to about 240 KBps, meaning a 2.4 MB file would take ten seconds to download, not one second. Impressive for EVDO, but not the DSL-busting speeds that 2.4 MBps would represent. * yes I know there are 8 bits in a byte not 10, but network overhead blah blah blah

Jersey Shore people - 4G is now in Monmouth County east of the Parkway. Was at work in Neptune and saw 4G - speeds are 10 mbps on the downlink, 2ish on the uplink. Saw reports of 4G in Eatontown as well - I didn't lose 4G till I got to Freehold on 33. Hopefully they will move west towards Allentown/Millstone where I live, but I'm happy to have it at work for now.

I thought I'd give you guys a heads up. VZW.com (and only the website) put the Rezound and Spectrum onsale for $100 on contract. Sale applies to upgrades and new's. The website claims the sale will last until 2/28. I guess the buyers' preferences for the Nexus and both Razrs means VzW wants to move some other inventory. The online only sale is also in the same ballpark with Amazon and Best Buy.

Would like to say that I had pretty much the same thing happen with mine. I'm taking it back tomorrow to swap units out. At first they thought it was a corrupt SIM card, but the weird thing was that while I was in the store the entire thing worked just fine. The moment I drove a few miles away I got into a Network Connect/Disconnect loop and watched the battery spiral out of control until the unit was dead (would have taken it back but had to head to work). Gonna just chock it up to a bad unit. Was more frustrating when I was sitting next to my father and his RAZR MAXX was getting full reception and working just fine, and my GNex had no service at all. I am glad to see that my first experience with Verizon support has been them bending over backwards to try and get things fixed though -- hopefully this isn't just because we're new clients.

At best, a Dinc 2. At $100 right now the Spectrum is a really good buy for the tech-savy. It's just been rooted, so once the crapware is frozen and a non crap launcher is on it, it's a really nice phone. The Display is fantastic, IMHO better than the nexus.
