Ok help me out here, any ideas what I might have done wrong?

I did the front pads on my 08 MS3 this weekend. Thought everything went ok, old pads out, new pads in button it all back up and good to go right? My brake pedal has an extreme amount of play in it now. Like, more than halfway down until my brakes feel like they are engaging. Once I get past that halfway point they feel pretty good, but it seems like there's way to far to travel until they start to grab.

These are the pads I put on

Just standard Duralast Gold. Anything I can check?

Two possibilities. One, somehow some air got into things and you need to bleed the brakes. Two, the duralasts are probably a considerably less aggressive compound than the OEM pads. I went with Hawk HPS pads and lost a tiny bit of initial bite, but I'll take it in exchange for no clouds of brake dust

So my MS3 decided it hasn't cost me enough money recently. Took it to a shop to get the right front wheel bearing replaced. Supposed to be a two hour job and a $50 part. Well, turns out that my halfshaft and hub decided to weld themselves together. The shop couldn't separate them with their press, and neither could a machine shop nearby. :emo:

So, I now have a completely new right front corner - spindle, hub, everything. The guy who runs the shop is a friend so at least he got me a hell of a deal, but $1100 still stings a little.

Of course I now also realize that the bearing must have been bad for something like 40k miles. It always sounded like tire noise until very recently when it finally started to vary by which way I turned. So much quieter now.

What year is your MS3? I had a wheel bearing replaced last year under warranty on my '07 MS6.

2007. I replaced the LR as well because it was making a ticking noise when I spun it by hand, but that was a cakewalk in comparison (and not the major cause of the noise).

I almost wonder if the halfshaft seized in the hub ages ago and wore the bearing out prematurely. Dunno, but what I do know is that the car is sooooo much quieter now, I love it.

That should have been under warranty then.

Bumper to bumper is only 3/36k, and the wheel bearing probably isn't powertrain. 50k ago is still 50k on my car, I rack up the miles.

Wanna know how much damage a wooden mailbox can do to a Speed3 in a residential neighborhood? The answer is officially $3212.74. Stay awake when driving kiddos. Also, it's the first time in a while I can say "thank god for insurance."

Hmm. Is the powertrain warranty different than standard? My invoice from Mazda says I have 5 years of warranty coverage (runs out this spring) but doesn't specify bumper to bumper or not.

Bumper and power train are two separate warranties. Bumper is 3/36k years and pt is 5 yr/70k.

I had a CX-5 out yesterday. Definitely a nice ride, I like the feel and handling of it. But it's definitely lacking in the power department, hope we get the turbo diesel next year. The one I drove was a GT with AWD if that makes a difference. It has the smallest transfer case and rear diff I have ever seen.

What do you think it means, bitch?
Anyone with a 3 had any issues with the power steering? At very low speeds I can hear it making some noise (whirring/mechanical), not sure how typical this is, but it seems a bit odd. Could just be that I don't have enough momentum and as such the pump and system are having to do more work than usual and I just happen to be able to hear it.

SynMoo

Do you hear it all the time or just when turning at the extreme limits of the wheel?

IOwnCalculus

Very low speeds are when your power steering is working the hardest, save perhaps for an autocross event. Some noise is normal, at least from the MS3's traditional hydraulic setup - never driven the electrohydraulic on the regular 3.

SynMoo

The Gen2 speed3s have the electrohydraulic. It's pretty silent.

I hear it at very low speeds on my 2012 Mazda3 when I'm really cranking the wheel. I assume it's normal.

Yeah, same. It's tied to your acceleration, so if you're going slow, it becomes more difficult and you can hear it more.

The drawback of the electro-hydraulic is that it places quite the load on the system at low speeds. Watch your lights dim and hear your fans slow down as you maneuver into a parking spot.

So I finally called up my local dealer to get my MS6 worked on. They are going to replace the timing chain, and some other stuff under warranty for the clicking sound at start-up. I am just waiting for them to have a day when they can have a loaner car for me to take.

In other news, those with WWP Speed6's just had their cars become more rare by this clown local to me boosting at what they were thinking was 100 MPH in a 35. Into a tree. He is very, very dead along with his passenger

http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=19374888

From the article:

quote:

"The car literally was split in two," Sandy Police Sgt. Jon Arnold said. "Debris was thrown several hundred feet. It was a severe impact with the tree."
Arnold said a police officer witnessed the Mazda speeding on 7800 South and turned around to follow it. The officer didn't see it again until after it had crashed into the tree and was engulfed in flames, he said.
The video of the remnants of the car is one of those most :stonk: moments of thinking what kind of force that it took to get a car going that fast to stop in that short of distance.

Yeah, that actually happened about a mile away from my house. They're having a candle light vigil for him tonight. I feel bad for the guy... but seriously, 100 mph in that area is ridiculous, can't say it wasn't foolish. Unfortunate they had to go out like that though...

I don't know - kind of have mixed feelings on how I feel. I am more sad for the passenger than the driver, and the family of the driver. At 4 AM, and those speeds is beyond stupid.
Also - cool to see another local goon. I am out in South Jordan.

Yea the electrohydraulic system can be loud when its working hard.

Mazda is playing some trickery with the 2nd gen speed 3 elctrohydraulic system, when the turbo is working the power steering assist is reduced to combat torque steer.

I have lurked those forums, but not really enough going on to post on there. I have met a couple of guys at Cars and Coffee last fall at the star bucks off Redwood, but no MS6 guys. I met an RX-8 Guy, a guy with the NA 3GT. I will keep an eye out for some of the meets and get out this summer.

Tire time!

My tires are down to less than 25% tread remaining and with the spare set of wheels I want to get some dedicated summer street tires (I doubt I will be autoXing this summer). Recommendations?
