currently paying ~$87/mo after all taxes/fees in MA for the 450m/1000t/2GB (though my data is 4GB as I signed up during the 4G promo in December). Next month it goes down because I finally went to a local store with my paystub to cash in on the 15% service discount I get with my employer (and 25% off accessories ).

450 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data is $82/month with the LEO discount. If you're not getting a discount for something, you probably can. When I was in college I got a 17% discount for having a .edu email.

If you have a work email address there's this nifty page to look up if you have discounts available to you. The nice part is if you go through this route it can be applied and confirmed online (or at least it did for me a few months ago) and you don't need to bring a pay stub or ID into a store. http://www.verizonwireless.com/employee-discounts-email-authentication.shtml

Just gave this a shot, I have a feeling that my work e-mail will block it but we will see. I'm just going to ask how our suits use for wireless service. The $99 Galaxy Nexus + 4GB data deal on Amazon its really tempting right now...if I can get a discount I think it is a done deal. edit: Just got to work...looks like my company gets a 10% discount and up to 25% on accessories...I think I'm going to pay the $50 ETF through sprint and switch over Auron fucked around with this message at 14:02 on Mar 8, 2012 |

Quick question before I pull the trigger...if it ends up 1000 text messages isn't enough, can I upgrade from the 39.99 450 minute plan to the 59.99 450 minute/unlimited text plan?

Since you're getting an Android phone, you might be better off switching to Google Voice. You can port your number to it, and then you can do unlimited text messages for free. You can make it so when people call it, you cell rings, and when you call them, your GV number is displayed. There's really no point of paying for SMS. You can also get your text messages on Chrome Browser or the GV tablet app.

Your Google Voice number is displayed on your recipient's caller ID if you let the GV app route your call through GV first. But that results in calls to mobiles never getting treated as mobile-to-mobile (for either party) since GV sits in the middle. MMS-to-email forwarding currently only works for Sprint users who opt into the Sprint/GV integration. If you aren't one of those people, then your MMS just gets silently dropped. I've also been hearing that you can fit the battery from the MAXX in a standard RAZR case, though I don't know if there might be cooling issues that necessitated the larger casing on the MAXX.

Wifey is not at all technical enough to understand GV and since GV is still only one-way with MMS messages she doesn't want to switch. Apparently emailing an image is somehow not okay to her. As it's now costing me $30/month, she and I will be talking about this real soon anyway.

Unless there is something that you just hate about the Galaxy Nexus it really is your best bet.

I live in nowhere Vermont, and visiting family brought up a tablet with a verizon data plan. Now my phone is only 3g capable, but the tablet (capable of 4g) was receiving 4g signal despite my location not being on any 4g maps. So... what the hell? I went to speedtest.net and confirmed that it was a significantly higher data rate (12 mb/sec down, 5 mb/sec up, ping around 65 ms). Is this likely an area they are testing and opening soon, with that one day being a fluke, or if I got 4g over the weekend should I be able to count on 4g til the map updates?

My 1500 minutes + unlimited data/text costs me about $40 since I'm just piggybacking on an existing Verizon family plan (4 people). $29.99 for grandfathered unlimited data, $10 for the line. About the same amount I was paying with Sprint for my Palm Pre on Sprint for an comparable individual plan with a corporate discount. I suppose a "true cost" might be closer to $60-70 since the minutes/texts are shared, but it's still a drat good deal.

IIRC the MAXX battery only fits in the standard RAZR if you also buy a MAXX back casing. You still need the extra space provided by the MAXX back, but it snaps onto the standard RAZR front just fine (although I think there's a gap near the SIM slot or something).

As long as I'm understanding him correctly. quote:the tablet (capable of 4g) was receiving 4g signal despite my location not being on any 4g maps. That's pretty common for Verizon. In my location in Michigan, I think the 4G signal for my phone went on & off for weeks (and in different locations and speeds) before it finally turned on full-time, accompanied by a Verizon Press Release.

I port my old number to GV from Sprint...then sign up for new service with Verizon with a new number? Or am I porting my number from Sprint to Verizon then porting it to GV? Unless it's a family line or some other non-standard single-person account.

Yeah, switching carriers is a great time to port your number to GV. When you tell Google to port your number, it will automatically terminate your contract with Sprint. If you are month-to-month, and not under contract, this won't cause a problem. If you are still under contract, you will get an ETF. When you sign up with Verizon, they will randomly assign you a new phone number. Then you just tie your GV number to your new phone number. Once you set up GV on your phone, you won't ever really need to know the phone's actual number. Everything will just run through GV.

Currently I have an individual plan: 300 any time minutes, 1000 text messages, unlimited data, and pay $75.91/mo. I'm offered a 20% service discount because I work for Darden, which also grants 25% off of accessories. If I dropped the insurance, I would pay $69.90 a month. Which is pretty darn cheap. I've had the Droid X since release, and immediately slapped the Google voice app on it. I originally had 450 any time and unlimited texts, but ultimately came to the conclusion that I didn't need to pay the extra money. I'm not a big talker so the 300 any time isn't a big deal. So at home, I just make all out going calls from my desktop pc. Anything incoming, I'll just ignore and call them back, haha. I pretty much only use my Verizon number to text multimedia messages to about 4 of my friends, who are the only ones who even have my Verizon number. Which makes it near impossible for me to exceed my 1000 texts. I'm pretty sure I haven't ever used more than 250 even when I had unlimited. Otherwise, I would just email them whatever it is I was sending them. I'm not even sure though how much data 5000+ texts a month using Google voice generates. Not that it matters to me really.

If you're interested in streamlining this process, there's a setting on the GV webpage that lets you forward calls to Google Talk.
