The only possible downside of going through Amazon is that if you cancel your contract in the first 6 (?) months, you have to pay an ETF to both Amazon and Verizon. If that won't be an issue for you, then it looks like you're in great shape.

Ok now that I mentioned how much I love the Nexus...I do have one gripe. Is it a common thing with 4.0.2 to lose all reception for absolutely no reason? I have no 3g, no 4g, and no bars. It seems to happen at least once or twice a day. Otherwise I usually have 3-4 bars. If this is common, does 4.0.4 address this? edit: After a bit of digging, it looks like this isn't a Nexus thing at all, but something with Verizon's LTE authentication. I guess it happens to all 4G phones. Auron fucked around with this message at 15:18 on Mar 16, 2012 |

Yeah they shrunk the logic board down a ton. I don't see that happening much with the LTE iPhone, as its going to be pretty much the same exact components in the 4G iPad. They CAN make the phone a bit bigger and give everyone a bigger screen that everyone wants, AND THEN cram some bigger battery in there.

So as of yesterday I'm eligible for an upgrade. What are the chances that Verizon gets the Galaxy Note/Galaxy Journal? It's the only phone I really want. I've got a Droid X that's been pretty good to me, minus needing 5 warranty replacements due to hardware issues. If there's no chance of Verizon getting the note/journal, I suppose I could settle on the Galaxy Nexus. But I'll be a sad panda/ hot as hornets if I pull the trigger on something else it gets announced. My primary reason for wanting is the note/journal is the screen size. I'm a pretty big guy in stature. 6'7" and have baseball mits for hands. The 4.3" screen on the X is ok, but after holding the note and fiddling around, every time I look at my X I'm just disappointed. The note just feels so much better in my hands and in my opinion, is a much more masculine phone. It actually feels like im holding something (I prefer the extra weight/heavier phones). I have a lot of streaming and cloud services also, so the gains to the media experience from the increased screen size would be a welcome addition. The phone/tablet compromise is also exactly what I'm looking for. I work a lot and I'm the go just as much. Carrying a second device isn't an option. Ultimately, if anyone has any insight to my conundrum, I'm all ears.

I just ran the test before making this post, and this is pretty much the speeds I've been seeing as well. Some areas will do about half this based on reception, but this is optimal. It sounds like "oh, it won't matter much" but it does. The browser is no longer waiting on data, and so things load so much faster it is a visible and tangible benefit. Websites load as fast as your computer because the connection speeds are roughly the same. Also chiming in like the last page - this defeats the need for wifi. It does drain the battery a bit, but not horribly with newer phones. Even on my rezound I can get more time than on the G1 in comparison, even if I use 4g all day long. 4g has improved to the point where you don't really need to turn it off - but I wouldn't say that it';s improved enough that you don't need to basically plug in your phone whenever possible. notwithoutmyanus fucked around with this message at 17:29 on Mar 17, 2012 |

I went ahead and got the iPhone 4S and if 4G gets here soon, I'll sell it, and if it doesn't, it should be here by the time my new every 2 is up again, then I can get the 5S or whatever. Thanks for the advice and I'll keep Amazon in mind if I need to sell!

From what I can gather, an official Samsung one was available at a ridiculous $90 price point for a short time, but was yanked off the market due to dock mode not working right and now there's nothing. No word on a reasonably priced desktop pogo pin dock?

Or you can add Extended Warranty which means Verizon will swap our your device at no charge if there isn't any physical damage for $1.99 / month. There is also TEC (total equipment coverage) which is a combo meal that gives you both WPP and Extended Warranty costing $6.99. Open enrollment is set to end at the end of May. So my sister and I are currently on AT&T with out contract expiring in June. We'd like to switch to Verizon, and I had my eye on the Galaxy Nexus, which is considerably cheaper through AmazonWireless. The only problem is she's been using an Iphone 3GS for a while and wants to upgrade to a 4S when we switch to Verizon, but it's not available through AmazonWireless. Is there any way we can coordinate something with Verizon and AmazonWireless so that we both get the phones we want without it costing an arm and a leg?

Amazon wireless doesn't seem to think that I have a phone upgrade on my line, is there any other way to get a nexus for a decent price? I'm still on the fence between it and the razr maxx, I guess its just an apples/oranges thing between better hardware or better software support and a better screen, but I'm leaning toward the nexus because I've hated every motorola droid I owned in the past.

PSA: the next time you update apps through the market, don't do a batch update. Verizon just shoved out some new bloatware, and one of the apps - Verizon Location Agent - refuses to let the phone sleep while the screen is off. Cue many customers with dead batteries and a worthless app they can't turn off. Refusing to update won't get the ugly thing off your phone, but I declined the update and haven't had any wake locks. I am having a couple of problems which started around the same time (late Saturday EST) - my wifi signal drops intermittently, and sometimes the media volume stops working until I reboot the phone. For the record, I have a Rezound, running 2.3.4 / sense 3.5, stock everything except a custom launcher.

I think I know the answer but I just want to make sure: I am able to upgrade my phone but pretty much everything is 4g these days. I assume that when I upgrade, I will lose my unlimited data plan? I currently use 4+ gb a month (mostly from google music streaming... i think) and I'm afraid of paying out the butt. Actually, that and with how expensive phones are (ones that I like, anyway- I think the highest I could go is the droid razr for 149.99, and that's a stretch) are the only reasons why I don't want to upgrade. Looks like I'll be sticking with the Incredible until it dies. Another question: Why is it that amazonwireless says its only going to cost 99.99 to upgrade to a galaxy nexus on a single plan, but if I'm a family plan its going to cost 229.99? I'm not getting two phones! Doctor Butts fucked around with this message at 22:43 on Mar 19, 2012 |

I'm not getting two phones! They're getting some monies from Verizon and passing on some savings to you to encourage you to signup through them. New lines have much cheaper phone prices than upgrades, and I believe single line upgrades are still a bit cheaper than family plan line upgrades. Verizon wants new customers more than they want to retain current customers and this is reflected in Amazon's prices. Of course they still want to keep current customers, which is why you get a subsidy at all. Anything more specific than that is beyond me, though!

Cool so I called verizon trying to figure out why I can't buy a phone, they said that I shouldn't have a problem and that the issue is with Amazon wireless, so I went and drove to Fry's to buy a nexus. Upon getting there I find out that I actually owed a month's payment balance to verizon for over 30 days. Except I remember paying the bill and a call to my bank confirmed that. And it hasn't been 30 days since it was due anyway (but apparently verizon considers you late after 10, but tells you its 30 days?) So I decided gently caress it, I may as well pay next month early, so I paid my month's balance again online. Went back to the store, still can't buy a phone. I have never in my life heard of another company that gives its customers such a hard time when all I'm trying to do is hand them legal US cash money dollars from my wallet. On the bright side I guess all the lines on my contract are up in a month so I can find another carrier. Glad I realized how poo poo this company is to deal with before I committed to another 2yrs and a new set of droids.

So here's something kind of funny. I spoke with a level 2 tech support specialist at Verizon when I was going through the whole ordering my new Razr Maxx process. So my current phone, the Thunderbolt, has a SIM card. Will I need to move this to the Razr Maxx when I receive it? No you won't need to do that. The Razr Maxx won't use a SIM card so you can keep that in the Thunderbolt in case you want to reactivate it later. Oh okay, so I don't need a SIM card at all for this phone then? Nope! Fast forward three business days after I was told I'd have the phone the next day after two more calls to Verizon to find out why they keep lying to me about shipping time and carrier. Awesome my phone is finally here! Time to activate this bad boy! *sees microSD panel on side of phone* *notices SIM CARD SLOT* In the reps defense, it isn't a standard SIM card, it's a micro SIM. BUT, the idiot didn't even know the phone needed a SIM card? He said he played around with it a lot to see how good the extended battery life was. =/ I will say that coming from a Thunderbolt with a 3200 mAh seidio extended battery (which is probably more like 2600 mAh), this phone is loving amazing. I'm having new phone issues, like seeing the internal storage of 5gb, internal SD of 8gb, then my external SD of 32gb all being read as different media and everything, by default, wants to save to the 8gb card. Not a huge problem, but still kind of dumb. Rooting this phone was so crazy easy. Way easier than going through the steps I needed to root the Thunderbolt at first. Not sure how much I like this SafeStrap compared to CWM, but it's good enough. I like the idea of having a safe mode ROM on backup though, even though I don't need it.

Kind of a weird question: I'm moving across the US so I have a mega road trip planned. To make the drive a little more tolerable, I'm looking into getting a mobile Hotspot device so we can have Internet access in the car for laptops and iPads (nobody has a smartphone data plan so we can't do tethering). I'm looking into getting a used MiFi 4510L and then signing up for 1 month of data. Does anybody know if the speeds are usable in the middle of nowhere (Oklahoma, New Mexico, etc)? I don't need video streaming, just browsing websites, Twitter, and e-mail will be more than enough. $50 for 1 month isn't too bad to distract us on the drive And I'm assuming this MiFi from Verizon has the broadest coverage just based on advertising, but if anybody knows of a better device, that would be great

Can I port a number to a line on a family plan after I get the phone? Long version: I have a 3-line family plan on Sprint. Me, my girlfriend, her dad. He lives an hour and a half away, and she's on vacation until the weekend. I'm thinking about buying 3 new phones on a new family plan, right now, through Amazon Wireless. I don't want either of them to get hosed out of phone service until they can get to me to transfer everything, so, can I buy three phones on three lines and port their Sprint numbers to them at a later time? EDIT: Amazon posted:When we process your number-porting request, your new wireless carrier will work with your current wireless carrier to close your current wireless account and transfer your current phone number to your new handset. To ensure uninterrupted service with your current wireless provider, we will not initiate the transfer request automatically. When you receive your phone, you will initiate your number transfer and service activation request based on instructions included with your shipment. This makes it sound like I'll be fine as long as I don't activate their phones until they're ready to switch, right? lament.cfg fucked around with this message at 23:27 on Mar 20, 2012 |

However, AmazonWireless doesn't sell iPhones. What's the strategy here? Might there be any particular headache in doing so, particularly with regard to Amazon's requirement of 181 days of service (else $250 ETF)?
