I lock and keep the top up on my Miata pretty much 98% of the time. No issues in my 6 years of ownership. I keep nothing in view. I also have a hardtop incase something bad happens. (It's actually for winter.  )

I want a hard top so I can remove the soft top and frame completely, the clean look and added weight benefit when I take it off would be nice. Although I'm not going to baby this Miata I think I'm gonna get all weight nazi on it and see how far I can take it. Anyone know what the soft top and frame weighs?

About 40 pounds, according to the miata.net folks. I had one delivered and installed last week, and I'd say that's what it felt like when I was moving it around. I was seriously thinking about doing the hardtop-only thing, but I found a great soft top for a reasonable price and went with that.

Can I get some advice on potentially joining your ManClub? Make sure it runs fine when cold (coil packs), top for holes and tears. Oil leaks. Pretty standard stuff. Doesn't look too bad from the pictures, other than the seats being pretty worn. Prices isn't too bad.

http://imgur.com/a/ZKWqv 2000 Miata LS 139k miles, Timing belt, water pump, gaskets done about a year and half ago, maybe two, but less than 10k miles in that time, redline synthetic fluid in diff and transmission. 1.5 year old bilstein sport shocks, H&R Springs, 1 year old TRM (tirerack) wheels and tires (Kumho AST's I think) with less than 5k miles on them. Has hail damage on hood, scratch on rear right quarter panel, soft-top has been removed, hardtop is removable, but I never take it off. NO Check engine light, I do think the valve cover gasket is leaking. Otherwise its p sweet.

That radio obviously isn't stock, and it had the double din bose unit - which is a PITA to change out. I don't think the wood trim stuff is stock - I've never seen it around all the vents/instrument cluster. No idea if those style hoops are stock either.

 Got the LE turbo out today for the first time since fall. Stopped at a local car 'meet' tonight (aka FNTF, 10 years later) and got a lot of looks/questions. Really fun but definitely a track toy. Back to the sunburst tomorrow... 5pt harnesses, hard top only, and the amount of noise and harshness is just a little too much for a commute.

Anybody have any experience with 1.6 -> 1.8 swaps, and vice versa? This '99 I've got sitting here is very conveniently sitting 2 feet away from my '92 sunburst. It seems that it would be *very* easy to swap the 140hp motor into the one I'm keeping, and the 116hp one into the one I'm selling anyway. Don't think it would lower the value of the one I'm selling much anyway (cmon, who's gonna complain about a $3000 NB). 25hp seems like a big difference for a 2100lb car... or am I crazy considering this?

You keep the ECU/wiring in their respective chassis. They're supposedly fully compatible so all I would be buying is 200cc, higher CR, and higher flowing head and IM. Just don't want to take a weekend to swap it if it will end up being unnoticeable...

There isn't a way to get the 92 motor to output the NB style crank and cam signals without hacking some poo poo up. Getting the 99 motor to output 92 style signals involves sticking a 90-97 CAS into the back of the head. You'll have to put some effort into ignition, tach and fuel though. If you're still interested I can type up more info. Exhaust manifold won't bolt up in either direction. It's noticeable. I went from the 97 motor to a 2001 motor and I easily noticed the power bump at AX as well as on track. My car is ~2400 with driver and fuel and 121WHP. I did a lead/follow session with my car behind my instructor in a 90-93. About 1/2 way down the straights at VIR I would just go to maintenance throttle to hang behind him. You can make 150-160whp with a VVT motor from the 2001-2005, but there's a lot of money that goes into it. A 1999 engine with a 2001+ exhaust header is a good combo, though.

OK I know I'm getting really annoying but more questions. My '92's soft top finally decided to let go. It already had a million pinholes and a rip in the upper zipper seam. Yesterday afternoon the entire lower seam let go at once.  Looks like there's a few options as in: Brand: No Clue What to Choose Zipper or Zipperless: Wouldn't zipperless be way easier? Vinyl or Canvas: Does it really matter? Plastic or Glass: Definitely doing Glass Defroster or no: Already have the wiring so definitely want the defroster. Can I assume it plugs into the stock plug for where the hardtop goes? Any suggestions?

I put a Robbins no-zip defroster glass vinyl top on my NA and was pretty happy with it. The quality of Robbins is pretty similar to OEM for about half the price (think I paid about $400-450 several years ago). Glass is definitely the way to go, gently caress plastic. The zipperless top is a pretty slick design, though it takes a while for the vinyl to loosen up and there's a slight trick to making it all fold down nice and neatly all in one motion. You get used to it though, and if I had to do it again I'd buy another zipperless glass top. The glass window is a tiny bit smaller than the plastic window (so that it can fold in one piece), but the visibility out of it is so much better that it doesn't matter at all.

I keep putting off replacing the top on mine, I have a cheap no-zip plastic top with new tension cables and a new rain rail to put on it but I hear it's just not fun at all to replace I need to get off my lazy rear end and do it already if I'm going to sell this thing.

Oh no worries, definitely going glass. I'm top down 99% of the time I'm driving, only time it's up is if I hit unexpected rain (I run the hardtop if I know it's coming, or just take the WRX)... it sucks not be able to see when it's raining.

If you just look at peak HP 99-00 and 2001+ are about the same. The VVT system gives you a lot of midrange torque though.

On the motor swap -- really don't. There's not enough power difference to nearly justify the time/expense. On the top -- I put a Robbins top with a tinted rear window in my car. Easy install and the cloth is so much nicer than the crap vinyl that it's a no-brainer if you're going to go through the effort to change the top out. You can also just change the rear window section out if you want to keep the rest of the top and not deal with complete replacement.
