For "metal out of nowhere!", what comes to mind for me is the bit in In The Loop where Toby goes to the death metal club with Anna (I think her name is Anna? [edit: the actress's name is Anna, oops, the character is Liza]), and bam, Cannabis Corpse live set out of nowhere. I loved that bit and wish I'd asked the band about it when I saw them last year.

Also Ace Ventura. An example of the reverse would be Airheads, a movie that is actually about heavy metal, and they used White Zombie.

I remember hearing that Jim Carrey specifically requested Cannibal Corpse for Ace Ventura, because they were his favorite band.

I heard Anal oval office in a porn flick once. Also there was a really out of place Iron Maiden song during the climax of Dario Argento's Phenomena. And I swear that one of Tony Soprano's kids had a Nattens Madrigal-poster in their bedroom. edit: of course there's also that South Park episode where Cartman refers to Slayer as death metal. Trey Parker really should be a big enough dork to know better. ElectricWizard fucked around with this message at 15:11 on Mar 25, 2012 |

My favorite metal from nowhere was an older episode of Bones.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1248445/ posted:Skeletal remains used by a Norwegian Black Metal Band lead the team to explore the underground music scene. Gordon-Gordon prepares to retire from psychology, but not before meeting with Sweets and helping Bones and Booth solve their current case. Written by Jesse Sanchez While it wasn't a bad episode, it was pretty silly. Looks like someone heard about Mayhem, did a little reading on wiki, and thought it'd make for a good episode. It got a lot of things fairly accurate, but really blew some other things way out of proportion, even for a black metal fan. edit: grammar Fiendish Dr. Wu fucked around with this message at 14:59 on Mar 25, 2012 |

Uh, so, the new Meshuggah is pretty terrible. There wasn't one catchy riff on the whole album. Every song sounds the same and it seems like they're doing all their riffs at half tempo. Everything is totally slowed down and boring. The only track that was even remotely interesting is Do Not Look Down. Geeze, what a disappointment. And I thought Obzen was pretty killer too.

I just remembered another radical metal from nowhere moment. The movie The Gate, and it's on netflix streaming. Kids play an LP by Sacrifix backwards and it opens a gate to hell in their backyard.

On an episode of NCIS: LA They start rattling off "P" metal bands names and it's like Possessed and Pantera. In an old friends episode, someone asks about "Carcass" for the reception and Phoebe says "Carcass with a C or a K, who cares?! They're both great!"

This video is pretty good for bizarre places to see metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa9YS7bj9Wo "Technical Death Metal Band on Kids TV Show". Unfortunately the band sucks (and it isn't technical death metal). I have started saying "awww how about that gang?" and "teechnical deeth meetal" quite often though. Does anyone still listen to Soulfly? I think their new album is pretty good.

Misogynist posted:Naming the band after an Entombed song and the album after a Carnage/Dismember song is perhaps taking it a bit too far for me to enjoy this, especially when they sound more like very early (and not very good) Edge of Sanity rather than either of the bands whose work they're pillaging for the sake of name recognition. Dan Swano mixed that album so I understand why you're getting the Edge Of Sanity vibe. I thought the band was going for more of a Nihilist vibe than anything else and pulled it off pretty well while mixing in a couple other slower influences throughout the album. I'd try and debate with you a little more, but I have been up for two days and am feeling a bit out of it. Meh.

So, the Pirate Bay's front page link is for the album "Abrasive Peace" by the Portuguese band Colosso, endorsed by the band itself so it's cool to torrent. If you're into tech death and were disappointed with Koloss you should give it a spin; I don't dig this style of metal normally but they pull it off extremely well for being a relative unknown.
