There's a nugget of truth in Desperado Bones' case cover story that applies to that photo of mine. These are empty boxes you have to redeem beyond the cash register.

Usually those trade boxes look like distinguishable pieces of ...work. At least they took the effort to switch fonts :(

The less stuff it has the better. Sometimes my DVDs don't even have a pretty menu, it's like someone burned the movies on Nero or something like that (All those DVDs are legal, just cheaper).

It's an aesthetic/design principle, not a callback, you weirdos. It's the same reason the trailer was a "leaked" bootleg and the opening credits was a James Bond parody in which people were killed by USB cables - it's creating a feeling of technological secrecy, like you're in the shady back alleys of hackers and industrial spies.

I still can't believe how literal-minded this board gets sometimes.

Yeah, this makes sense and now I feel kind of stupid.

I like the simplicity of it,and the way the text was placed.

But then, even the American one wasn't so iconic or good:

I'm sure getting the idea took weeks, making it? Less than 30 minutes.

I can't see that poster without thinking of the XXX parody, which has the best title one of those has ever had: Intercourse With The Vampire.

It's time again to look at how posters can get increasingly worse as the movie gets closer to release. Let's look at "Apart" for today's example!

All right. Good teaser. This isn't exactly the most original concept for a poster in the world but it's eye-catching and suggests that maybe something is amiss.

Oooh, still good. Intriguing design, although, again, it has been done before. You've got my attention. What's the next one look like?

Oh gently caress you! Wait... is this even for the same movie?

Now let's watch the reverse of this phenomenon happen.

Yikes! That is quite a clusterfuck of a poster you've got going there. Everything looks extremely wonky and out of place, especially that distorted skull acting as a reflection (:wtc:) in the table.

Same idea, infinitely better execution.

I also rather like these.

The Utu poster is an example of the VHS cover being a vast improvement on the theatrical poster.

They got rid of all the people down at the bottom and kept the big giant head.

Speaking of horror...

This is from the most recent batch of updates on IMP Awards. Not getting any points for originality here.

These are both posters from horror movies released in 2010.

And this is a still from "The Ring", a movie released ten loving years ago, and a remake of a movie made in 1998 (that was itself an adaptation of a novel) to boot. Creepy long-haired kids are starting to reach the same status as curly-mustached villains who tie women to railroad tracks.

Also, the original title is apparently "Emergo", which immediately made me think of this:

Hell, porn parodies usually come out either slightly after, or even before the movie they are parodying comes out. I think even porn would scoff at the idea of making a Kill Bill parody 10 years after the god drat movie came out.

What I find amusing about these is that you can see the demographic shift in who the posters appeal to. The first two seem rather artsy, possibly aimed at young 20 something year olds. The third one looks like it is aimed at the YA market (ie 15 year girls). It really looks like they are two different movies aimed at two different demographics.

One has to wonder which poster(s) is most appropriate for the movie... if it's some Twilight-esque YA flick, then I'd rather it not be marketed like Never Let Me Go because I probably don't want to see it. If that's the case then the last poster is actually getting more to where it should have been in the first place.

[edit] Just watched the trailer and I'm not sure which of them would be appropriate.
