I'm looking for some quick advice. We're making the switch over to Verizon but I can't decide on which phone to get my wife. Can anyone give me some input? There's the Galaxy Nexus which looks sexy and runs ICS, plus it's $79 on Amazon Wireless right now. Then there's the Razr which also looks sexy, and it only $70. Finally the Razr Maxx, which apparently has a battery sent from heaven. The catch is that it is $199. She claims she doesn't really care which phone I pick for her, she just needs a new one. I just don't want to pick one that will end up causing a lot of trouble like her Evo Shift has given her. So, what are the general pros/cons for these phones? Does anyone have experience with all of them? Any regrets after purchasing one?

Battery life is OK. Screen is amazing. It's my favorite and the one I bought. There's really no point in buying a razr. Razr maxx is a razr with a gigantic battery bolted on to it. You're at the mercy of Verizon for updates. Played with it, but I don't like Blur. I'd rather have stock android.

Im trying really hard not to pick up the Nexus until i find out what is going on with the Galaxy S3 and whatever phone LG is putting out in the next few months. Im sure Verizon won't get either but i know as soon as I jump and buy a new phone something awesome is going to come out.

I think the general consensus for a phone that will cause the least problems is the iPhone. It has lots of apps, great battery life, and all up-to-date software. The in-store support from Apple Stores is top notch and their Applecare+ warranty is a solid deal. She'll also like the accessories selection. Buy a phone for your wife, not a phone for you to play around with that your wife uses.

I'm serious about advising that guy to not get his wife a Galaxy Nexus. I live in a well-covered LTE market and being able to make a call or get a data connection at any given time time is a coin flip. It is plagued with instability issues, and Samsung's QC is garbage. I'm upset that I left Sprint and my EVO for this piece of trash. It is the best mobile computer I've ever owned, but the worst phone I have ever owned.

Haha I came from the EXACT same scenario...perfect running, brick solid EVO 4G. Best phone I've ever owned. I even paid a $55 ETF to take advantage of the $99 Amazon deal because I thought it was going to be a limited time. Damnit. Guy with the wife...buy her an iPhone, seriously. Chicks love iphones. My fiance had an Evo 4G and was always handing it to me saying, "here, fix this." Now, I can't pry her iPhone from her hands. Also, she can work an extended shift without taking her changer with her. My next phone will probably be an iPhone 5 of the Sprint Nexus doesn't tempt me before that.

As a counterpoint, my Galaxy Nexus has been fantastic. My wife got a Bionic a couple weeks ago and has had signal issues and terrible battery life, Thunderbolt-esque even. I know Motorola gets a lot of love from some people here, but so far I'm not too impressed. You guys with Nexus horror stories really should probably sell them and grab an iPhone, I don't think you'd lose too much money in that flip.

Don't get me wrong I really like my Galaxy Nexus, HOWEVER, it does have its fair share of problems that STILL haven't been ironed out yet, noteably the constant data/voice dropping which seems to be evident in pretty much every phone (as its a software issue). It is really sporadic though, somedays I'm perfectly fine, others constantly dropping signal for no reason. Also battery life is horrific if you don't limit what apps can do. Its just hard to recommend a buggy phone to someone who most likely isn't all that tech savvy, isn't going to be flashing custom ROMS/kernels, etc. I just flashed LiquidSmooth and Franco kernel on mine and it seems to have remedied the battery life issue other than when the screen is on, which really can't be helped. I've said it before, but I'm going to see how the software is up until the next iPhone is released...I'm sure it will be ironed out by then. I like my LTE. My wife and I each have a Gnex and it's been pretty good for us. I'd love for 4.0.5 to loving push already, but the phone's been a good experience for both of us. Of course, I thankfully don't have to worry so much about her being clueless with it. She was even using Linux on her desktop before I ever bothered with it.

I thought Motorola's whole thing was lovely screens but reliable and functioning, to complement Samsung's role. As a little lol on the side, I tried to get her to let me buy her an iPhone, but she's played with her friend's and didn't like it, and her friend is always complaining about it. So I tried to get her the most reliable/stable Android and, welp. It is stable I guess, not a single freeze or battery pull, so still an upgrade on the last phone.

Yeah, an iPhone was never an option for me either. My wife likes to rage against popular things, and she refused to even look at the 4s. Anyway, the Nexus should be here Friday. We'll test it out and see how it works for us. I went through Amazon Wireless, can I assume they give a grace period in which you can swap phones? If she has the connectivity issues then I wouldn't mind dropping a little extra cash because that's the main reason we were leaving Sprint.

This is the same experience we've had. I have a launch day nexus and my wife's got hers a few weeks after. I'm running custom roms but the wife is stock, rooted. No issues besides localized 4G issues. She came from an ailing Droid x so this is a huge improvement for her. That being said, if the Note/Journal ever comes out for VZW, I'd switch in a heartbeat. I'd even strongly consider a LTE iPhone.

Yeah it happens no matter what, I'm usually on wifi at work all day and I'll see no bars with an x in the middle for cell reception. Oh I also forgot the wifi drivers must suck rear end as well because range is not very good.

Was brightness set to full? Were you getting no signal? Also, you and Auron's description of data dropping is pretty crazy, too. I haven't ever ever had data loss requiring a reboot or airplane mode toggle. I did have a couple times soon after launch where I had data problems, but Verizon's network was also dropping out a bit then so I'm not totally sure it was the phone. I'm not on 4.0.2 anymore, so maybe all your problems will go away once the update gets pushed someday? vv I don't really get all the variability between individual phones of the same model. Is it all natural variability in the production of the internal components? Did you guys slam your phone against a table before turning it on the first time (understandable, it is an Android after all)? Is each Nexus beautifully hand-crafted by a Korean artisan?

Brightness was set to the barely-readable automatic brightness setting and the signal was 2-3 bars. This is a full signal location for a guy here who has a RAZR.

It seems like after a mad rush of phones there hasn't really been anything new lately. I'm with a Bionic right now and it's fine for me, no issues really but I'm getting the itch to get something new. I haven't really been paying attention, is there anything new coming out in the next month or so?

Like, as I understand it, everyone with a G2x eventually had it go bad on them, or every iPhone 4 had the silly antenna configuration. In any case, I'm sure the next update will make everyone's problems go away

The GN is manufactured in at least two separate facilities in China and Korea. Don't forget about the original SGS phones with bad GPS antenna solders, too. Two given phones from the same line would have different performance/lock speeds.

I would like an agent to look me in the eye and tell me they are going to risk losing a contract re-up over $30. The fee is utter bullshit, especially now that they've made $299 the new pricepoint for top of the line phones. Considering the removal of new every two, renewing a contract on Verizon has jumped almost $100 in the past two years. Explain to me again why I'm paying Verizon for the privilege of being locked into a contract with them?
