I saw Ghost, Mastadon and Opeth last night in Seattle. I had never heard Ghost before, and wow. They were awesome. I picked up their CD at the show and it's good. Really good. The lyrics are ridiculous, but the music and melody is amazing.

Mastadon absolutely kicked rear end. They put on an excellent live show. Curl of the Burl was as amazing live as I imagined it would be.

Opeth was just "OK" for me. I have seen them a few times before, and it was basically the same, but a lot more of the new album.

But yeah check out Ghost. Was good yo.

Ghost's album is really fun, I definitely need to dig that out of my collection again. I still haven't seen them live, the show I booked got cancelled :(

Opeth have put heavier stuff in their setlist again, right? They were really disappointing when I saw them on their UK leg of the Heritage tour. Encoring with a song from the new album was a bit of a joke.

I am desperate to see Mastodon again, I love that band a stupid amount, even if I was a little disappointed by The Hunter.

I saw him a couple years back and he had a chair on stage that some dude kept taking away when he'd get up and he kept having to go get it back. Eventually he just got pissed off and told them to leave his chair alone. :btroll:

Hey, guys. Just stopping by to drop off Kreator's shiny, new cover of "Number of the Beast". gently caress yeah.

I liked the clever little touch of incorporating the harmonised riff from 'The Trooper' into the solo but otherwise I wasn't impressed at all by that. Steve Harris' bass playing on the original was great and adds lots of nice subtle touches to the song but this cover didn't have any of that and just felt really two dimensional.

Joe Duplantier is an amazing vocalist, I did not expect the more emotional tone to transfer over live but he nails it. The progression is so great, the song just explodes at the end. It's also way, way better than the Blood & Salt single they did.

On Opeth - Not really. They mainly played Heritage and Ghost Reverie tunes. I didn't even stay for the encore if there was one. Was really lackluster in terms of stage show as well. It was like they were all "here is some music we play". No real energy. Made me sad.

Which really blows. I saw them with Dream Theater a few years ago and they were absolutely loving amazing.

But yeah, whether you like Mastadon or not, you should go see them. They are amazing live.

And it's just a little bit of Cretaceous Castle Magic
Opeth has been playing soft stuff for the first part and then a couple heavy tunes for the encore. When I saw them it was The Grand Conjuration and Deliverance. I know they played Demon of the Fall at at least one of the shows on this tour as well. Mike's growls sounded real good, too.

Re: the new Gojira song, I've only listened to it twice but I'm not as excited about it as everyone else seems to be. It just feels like the energy isn't quite there, like Gojira on mild sedatives. I'm looking forward to hearing it in context with the rest of the album, but it didn't hit me like Vacuity did when it was released, or Backbone when I first heard the band shortly after From Mars to Sirius came out.

I only talk about overhyped popular metal bands.

They're fun to watch, but they were much better when they had Anthony Geremia filling in for Glen Benton a few years ago. Benton just kind of sits there and looks fat. Geremia, on the other hand, was having way too much fun and had a better stage presence than pretty much any vocalist I've ever seen.

Anyway, last night I went to see Veil of Maya on tour with Betraying the Martyrs, Vildjhrata, Structures and Volumes. I normally wouldn't go to a gig like this because I am very selective when it comes to anything that could me construed as tech metal or the dirty word "metalcore" *shudder*, but it was quite an enjoyable evening. Volumes got a great crowd reaction considering they were first on, and the dual vocalists had a very good stage presence. I didn't think there was anything particularly special about their music, but it sounded massive and heavy in a live environment. Next up were Structures. These guys were alright, but not as good as Volumes. The clean vocals sounded a bit dodgy live, and there were sub drops all over the place that were clipping horribly. They still had some good energy though, which was shown by the response they got in the pit. I have literally, never seen anything like it. Arm swingers battling invisible ninjas everywhere, one guy even did a cartwheel across the pit. I had no idea what the gently caress was going on. The pit action was far more entertaining to watch than the band themselves. Vildjhrata probably got the least enthusiastic reaction from the crowd, but were musically my favourite. They had very dark, atmospheric sounds woven with the djent chug, and they sounded spectacularly heavy. Then Betraying the Martyrs hit the stage. Honestly, the less said about them the better. "Epic Christian Deathcore" should be all you need to know. Hideous. Veil of Maya were good but they only played for 40 minutes, which is kind of unacceptable if you're headlining and have something like 3 albums worth of material. I would also have liked to hear more off the new album, but they still put on a good show.

This is nice and all but this belongs in the deathcore thread.

Vital Remains are pretty much a toss-up live, since they generally have at least one new member per year, often have different fill-ins for each tour, and the entire line-up, minus Tony Lazaro, has been completely turned over a few times. Lazaro is the only guy in the band who has been on a VR album. They were good when I saw them many years ago, but the lineup changes make it unpredictable.

Hatman101 posted:

I've seen Krisiun a ton of times and they always have a ton of energy, they're sharp, and they get the crowd into it. They certainly put on a better show than Behemoth, Belphegor, Hate Eternal, and some others who followed them directly on different shows. The only band I can think of that played immediately following Krisiun that managed to top them was Immolation.

Anyway, I ordered the Watain Opus Diaboli boxset which arrived today :D It's very nicely presented, the photobook is very nice quality, the artwork on the LP jackets is nice, the box is good quality, and the signed screen print(?) also looks fantastic. Despite this, I do have a few gripes. The DVD/CDs don't have slipcases, they are simply affixed to the bottom of the box by discs that go through the centre of the DVD. This meant that by the time I received the box, they had all come loose and were sliding round the bottom. Luckily, none of them were damaged, but I didn't think it was great. Also, the LP jackets are VERY flimsy. They constitute strong paper at best. My only other gripe would be the fact that the box was shipped wrapped in 1 layer of bubble wrap in what was essentially a bin bag. I would happily have paid extra for safer shipping. Overall though, I am very happy with the contents of the product and overall quality of it. I have not watched the DVD yet, but the live recordings are brilliant.

All of gawd's fury could not keep me from this show. From what I understand, some of the venues on this tour have asked the bands to refrain from some of the details they are known for. The Devil's Blood covering themselves in blood and candles on stage. Watain's pig heads, animal parts/blood and some of their fire effects (torches, candles, etc.) Everything I've read though has lead me to believe that it's pretty much up to the individual venue, not the artists. So, if your attending this tour at a relatively small venue, some or all of the usual stage trimmings may be missing. I don't expect this to detract from my overall experience THAT much. Particularly Watain!
