While I didn't get off work in time to catch the moon rising (or stay awake late enough to catch it setting), I did get some good photos at exactly 11:34pm, when the moon was as full as it could possibly be. perigee-syzygy by PresidentMerkinMuffley, on Flickr

The great globular cluster in Hercules (M13). Globulars are always quite interesting to do, the requirement to bring out the full extent of fainter stars whilst maintaining definition into the core requires a different approach from the normal deep space long exposure imaging I do. In this case I used three stacks of images at different exposure lengths (21x 60, 120 and 180 seconds). Once properly combined that preserved pretty much everything I wanted. Finally got a chance to test out my new camera at night tonight after being camera-less for 6 months. I'm pretty new to photography, and the reason I'm posting these is to get some advice, so any tips or suggestions, particularly regarding cropping, is appreciated. It's wide enough that I really feel like I get an idea of the whole scene; and it's long enough that the water turns to glass. The color's great, too.

I think I need to get a bit farther out of town... I really want to do more aurora stuff, but lately every time the lights are out it's been lovely weather. Can't wait till this winter with the solar maximum, even though it's supposed to be rather weak

I really like this one shot. If I were you I'd try to boost the shadows a tiny bit, if possible, bring out some subtle detail in that boat and the hills. But, more importantly I'd crop out the white house on the left. All of it. It takes away from the balance between the chimneys and the boat. You could also try to remove some of the sky as well, to retain the aspect ratio.

Went back out to the cathedral last night for some night action. There has been scaffolding on the drat thing for months which really distracts from the image, but I'm reasonably happy with the results. I'll definitely head back later this summer when the scaffolding is removed. I'm not happy with the framing on the top image as I feel I have room to get the tops of the towers as well as moving it a bit to the left. Also, I need a wider lens. edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Hooker Hooker Cathedral 1 by chaussée, on Flickr Hooker Cathedral 2 by chaussée, on Flickr Wayfaring Stranger fucked around with this message at 11:18 on Jul 1, 2012 |
