There is definitely (so far as I perceive it) a particular bias here. Whether or not that's good or bad isn't really relevant, but it's pretty markedly different from say, that of reddit (in general) or stormfront or whatever the hell other forum you can think of with a fairly obvious stance (generally speaking). It's kinda nice to know that certain things are beyond the pale here, rather than some sort of wild west where clicking the wrong thread leads you to child porn or ron paul-esqe economic dogma (n.b.: I do not go anywhere near d&d, or lf). That said, the only other forum I go to is the fountain pen network (here), which is as un-politicized as can be. That's largely because fountain pens aren't exactly a political issue, like say, guns are. I imagine if you steer clear of forums that are specialized in popular culture or political issues, you can likely find an interesting place that is largely free of stupid memes, unpalatable attitudes, &c. But you would have to look pretty carefully. For example, I believe there are certain photography sites/forums that aren't particularly favored by the Dorkroom. I suppose that's the nature of specialization: much like certain car forums are not particularly well-received. Basically: places like SA (with a wide range of discussion) are oasis' in the desert of the internet. You're more likely to find a nice place with specialization, but it's no guarantee.

I don't have many friends on last.fm so I don't communicate with anyone there, mostly just read up on bands and enjoy my scrobbling stats. I also read very fast, and sometimes the forums (these ones) are slow. Lately there's been quite a few interesting active threads, but there's often times where I've read all the ones I'm following, and there's nothing new I can find. Hell, I don't even chat on IM programs much anymore. So I like reading, I guess. If it's faster forums you want, might I suggest a little site called 4chan? This thing here says they had 2.5 times more posts last week than #2 (SA was tenth). Have you read many other forums? There's one for expats in Switzerland where I live now and it is just god-awful. Nobody has a sense of humour, average thread length is 5 posts and there are 2 or 3 billy big-bollocks who post their lovely opinions in every thread. This is the way most other forums are for me, really. I'm happy to get one reply and then I almost never check back.

It's not even really about spending less time on SA, but adding something to it. If that makes sense. Maybe Amnesty Intl' has a forum or something. I know what you mean about other forums, though. I don't think SA is some magic formula, although I do think it's developed into it's own unique thing. Charge money for membership, have a large group of moderators that err on the side of harshness, voila, you cut out the worst of the internet overnight. Once the standards are higher, then there's a degree of self-policing as well in that you have to meet the standards of the community in order to gain acceptance in the community. I don't know any other sites that are like this one though, unfortunately. (P.S this thread isn't the place for your political beliefs, that was really weird)

I think there are probably other good forums out there, but not as broad as SA or reddit or metafilter (metafilter has seemed okay the few times I have been there, so that's one possibility). If you want good forums, you probably have to look for specific topics, e.g. subaru enthusiasts or game-specific forums. You're still likely to get memes and stuff, especially in "geeky" type subject forums like video games or computers, but not the same way you get them on reddit or 4chan. If someone wants to make a thread for chatting about forums culture you can feel free to do that in A/T. The title must include the phrase "navel gazing" and there needs to be a "stay civil" rule and a "no arguing about political/social issues" rule. I think it would be interesting to more people than just those who frequent this thread.

I've had a little black speck eye floater for a few weeks now. I was told it was common and it'd go away, but I don't remember having any before and it's not going away. Doesn't seem to have drifted anywhere either. 98% of the time I don't notice it but the other 2% of the time it's annoying as it looks vaguely like a bug in my peripheral vision. Is this rare or do a lot of people have them? It can be a little distracting.

Try rinsing your eye with some eyedrops. If that doesn't help, immediately visit an eye doctor. Seriously, hurry with that poo poo. It might be something that is embedded on your eye, could infect and then you're hosed. You need to be extremely careful with your eyes, they're about the weakest thing of your entire body, and arguably the most important! Don't take any chances. A qualified optician can perhaps also help you, but I suggest a doc in an actual hospital anyway.

The way you've described it, it doesn't sound like an external injury. Samopsa, it sounds like a floater, some cells that are floating around your vitreous humor. It's not ER/hospital-level stuff - but if you can, do go to an eye doctor and get checked out, just out of general principle of "something changed with my eye". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floater for more information. I don't know if they "go away", it's more like you learn to shuffle them out of the way and they tend not to I have a shitton of floaters in my right eye, that coincided with a punch of retinal vasculitis (hemorrhaging in the back of the eye). But, that was a shitton. An individual floater is of less concern, but you should still have a doctor peek in there.

# ? May 24, 2012 20:32 |

Yeah, it sounds pretty harmless, but my point was more that you don't want to take any chances concerning your eyes. And all internet medical advice should be blanketed with big warning signs to visit a loving doctor if you're not sure. Better safe than sorry when it comes to health issues!

Doesn't seem to have drifted anywhere either. I don't think it's that common in younger people. If it stays roughly rooted in place, like a blade of kelp in the sea of your eyeball, it could be the humor forming a small cavity over the retina and causing refractions. A sudden onset of a ton of floaters is not a good sign and should be immediately checked out by a retinal specialist. For what you describe, I would schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience. I'm no doctor, but I have floaters and an operculum from kickboxing and have had my eye checked frequently. Depending on the size and how you deal with your vision, your brain might be able to filter it out over time, which is what my doctor said to me initially. For me, the floaters bug the poo poo out of me and so I keep noticing and reinforcing them.

There was a show on History or maybe the Biography channel called "Urban Legends." They'd show vignettes of 3 urban legends, one of which really happened. You were supposed to guess which one really happened. I'm looking for a particular episode where a business or a home was getting repeated creepy phone calls at all hours of the day and night. Nobody would ever be on the other end. It turned out it was the heating oil storage tank of somebody's home. It had a device that would dial out on the phone line to the oil company when the level of heating oil was getting low. The phone number the person/business had recently gotten used to belong to the heating oil company and since it had been reconnected the oil tank was able to call it. On that episode this was the legend that was true. I don't care about seeing the episode so much (I can't find it on Youtube), but I've been looking for info about the incident.

Are some people just unable to tolerate spicy food? It smells amazing but even mild spicy things (chicken katsu curry, thai green curry etc) burn my tongue to fuckery. Is it really just a case of toughing it out until I get desensitised, or am I never going to get there? Everyone seems to be able to eat it but me The last katsu curry I had left my lips tingling in a burny way, I really struggled to finish it.

I'm looking for a small CRM solution for my (small) company that I can host locally. SugarCRM was okay, but trying to log calls and update when last we contacted a lead was a pain; I want something that will be as easy as possible for my salespeople to keep up with their workflow, be it generating leads, emailing them, or picking up the phone. Calendar features are a plus, not required.

I FINALLY got my pack of 4-blade razors in from the dollar shave club. I like them just fine. They're just as good as any name brand razor you can pick up for $15 at the store, they clean out nicely. The handle is good, but the clip where it snaps to the blade feels a little flimsy. When I ordered they were suffering from an unexpected rush and fell way behind in shipping. The site promises it won't happen in the future, so I'll bear with it. I'm pleased with the blades and will continue to keep my subscription, unless another delay like that happens My only real issue with them is how ridiculously male-centric the site/ads are. Obviously women spend a lot on razors too and would also like to jump on such a deal but the ad stops just short of saying THESE PRODUCTS ARE FOR MEN WITH PENISES. The closest it comes to addressing the fact that some women might at some point be interested in cheap blades is the site calling the 4x the "lover's blade" and saying "your girlfriend will also want to use this" as if addressing us directly is out of the question! I'm not saying the ad's not funny and that I need the product to be pink to want it (I actually dig the black and white a lot), but it seems silly to deliberately exclude half the population who has a great deal more shaving to do from the ad targeting. No one will care. It's a common, harmless mistake, and besides, what are they going to do? Call you up, say "It's a FOUR. Shame on you!"? Edit: vv The other guy might have to sort things out, because it was his account with the suspicious activity. More likely, they'll just put a lock on his online access for a few minutes. Rate-limiting login attempts on a per-user basis is one of the better ways to defeat brute-force attacks. Gravity Pike fucked around with this message at 03:38 on May 26, 2012 |
