Just going to share a brief chatlog from APB because I love being cursed at in foreign tongues. The start of this took place more or less at the end of the game, which was quite difficult because I was attacking and he was on defence. Anyway the last stage was a capture point like King of the Hill in TF2 so his advantage of always defending ran out and then he got kind of discouraged when I raped him straight out of spawn a few times. Near the end when he starts accusing me of being a hacker is another game straight after where I got to defend. He got very discouraged and started team killing to make it go faster.

The first one is roughly saying that he is going to gently caress your entire family. Specifically, he lists: "your family, your mother, your relatives, your past, your future, your family (again), your dad, your grandfather [I think, he's probably spelt 'dede' wrong], your younger brother, your older brother, your father's mother, and her mother too."

The second one is: "I'm saying I'm going to gently caress your mother's vagina."

I heard about this when it happened. For further context:

1. One of the top speedrun/optimization guilds had already managed to do a Feast of Boris one-day run, so everyone knew it was possible and there was already a guy on the leaderboards for it, so all the other speedrun guilds wanted to tag along.

2. Here is the forum thread for it: http://forums.kingdomofloathing.com/vb/showthread.php?t=192234

(For some dumb reason, characters are split up into four categories, matching the suits on a deck of cards. Spades are users who like to figure out the mechanics of new content, clubs are PVPers, hearts are probably something like "people who just play for fun", and I think diamonds are people who try to accumulate wealth, I don't remember).

3. Shortly after, I think the WANG and warm water effects were made to not count for the boss in question.

The suit of card thing is based off a research paper, back in the 90's that divided online gamers into four major categories. Explorers, (Spades) Achievers, (Diamonds) Socialisers, (Hearts) and Killers (Clubs).

Also, Jick's response from the whole debacle was to alter the Hobopolis boss items so they cannot be used until a character is at least 1000 turns into their current run, thus making them useless for dickstabbers.

Yeah, I love hearing about that sort of grief even if I've never played the game if the mechanics behind it are well-explained.

Have another longish mud story: Binky's Midnight Meat Carnival Of Pubbie Tears

So for anyone who hasn't played MUDs the main draw of any individual server is either the deviation from the normal game content (Think TF2 servers with heavy serverside modding except in a positive gameplay direction instead of just monkey-cheese weirdness and model replacement) or the social aspect of the playerbase. Usually the presence of the former leads to the latter, and the MUD in question had both.

Another slight bit of manditory context : The mud has quest items. Interpret anything with a quest- prefix as the ultimate rare drop on your MMO of choice that requires 20+ hours of mindnumbingly easy grinding to create.

Muds of this sort have a position usually called 'implementor'. This is the absolute highest level of administration and is called such because the people in question literally have access to the game's code for the purposes of adding new low-level content and fixing exploits. If it wasn't obvious from the Hassan story our implementors weren't very good at the whole code modification thing.

Enter the auction command. This was a simple code snippet that originated on some crafting-based MUD with no combat that eventually made its way into the game. The process behind this was rather simple - "auction <some item>" would remove the item from your inventory and announce it over a special channel, then people could bid war over it until the auction timed out and the goods and money were respectively delivered to the buyer and seller. It's important to note that most people would turn this channel off because it would always be filled with garbage.

In this particular mud codebase whenever a mobile died there was a random (fairly high) chance of it spawning various bodyparts as gibs. Some caster classes use them as reagents, but most of the time they're just room flavor showing something exploded violently nearby in the recent past. As such, they decay automatically after a few minutes.

So one day a friend got a heart gib from a particularly well-known annoying mob and auctioned it for shits and giggles. There were a few joke bids and slight amusement over the global chat channels, but halfway through the auction something magical happened. The heart decayed. For some reason completely unknown to me, instead of crashing horribly the game decided to redirect the "Item being auctioned" pointer to some armor a mobile was wearing.

code:
[AUC] Now taking bids on the heart of an ichthian cultist.
[AUC] 1 silver has been offered for the heart of an ichthian cultist.
[AUC] 2 silver has been offered for the heart of an ichthian cultist.
[AUC] the heart of an ichthian cultist, going once at 2 silver.
[AUC] a set of bronze splint mail (worn), going twice at 2 silver.
[AUC] 3 silver has been offered for a set of bronze splint mail (worn).
[AUC] a set of bronze splint mail (worn), going once at 3 silver.
[AUC] a set of bronze splint mail (worn), going twice at 3 silver.
[AUC] a set of bronze splint mail sold to <person> for 3 silver.
A guild friend currently online spotted this, made a hesitant bid, and wound up winning and receiving said armor. This got discussed in the guild channel and we made terrible plans.

A mage alt was rolled named Binky. Binky, being a mage, came with a reagent bag with the unique property of stopping item timers inside it. For around a week any time any of us got a body part drop we'd immediately recall and give it to Binky, whose sole purpose in life was to sit at recall and attempt to stuff anything given to him into his reagent bag. Once Binky was crammed so full of reagents that he couldn't move (think Morrowind's weight system) we put our plan into action.
A second mage alt (the name escapes me, I'll just call him Inky) was rolled. Both were summoned to a remote safe corner of the game sometime during the day.

Sunday Night at 10pm was peak downtime for the MUD as many of the players (us included) were currently middleschool or early highschoolers at the time. Lots of people would just stay logged on at all times in safe zones though as the game predated instant messaging services. This particular Sunday night had a fair amount of idle people. At roughly 12PM the magic began.

Binky was forced to take all this body parts out of his reagent bag, wait 4 minutes and 30 seconds, and then put them back in again. This resulted in every reagent having a timer of 30 seconds or less. Binky was then given a script that would make him pull a random object out of his reagent bag every 30 seconds and then auction it. Inky was given a large pile of silver and a script that would make him automatically bid one silver on anything being auctioned, or disconnect if nothing was auctioned for 5 minutes. Both were left to do their thing while most of the server slept.

When I got back on the next morning the game was in utter chaos. Our item dragnet had grabbed around a thousand items from random people and places including several pieces of quest gear and quite a lot of high-end-but-not-quest pieces. The amount of pure unfocused rage this caused was amazing and I wish I had a log of it. In the end, at least one person wound up ragequitting the game entirely because there was no log of exactly what had happened and the implementors had no idea either.

I've always liked how Battlefield handled the knife, where it was basically useless in close range, unless your target didn't see you, in which case it's a one hit kill. It also has the added effect of taking your target's dogtags, a fact which seems to anger some people.

I hate to be That Guy that posts a couple WoW stories, but I've seen and done a few amusing things in that game before I finally quit it.

A small story of witnessing a spectacular effort/tears ratio. For those of you who have never played WoW, if you target another player or mob and type "/spit" you get the ever-popular spit emote. You see it in your chat box as "You spit on <person>", while the target sees "<person> spits on you."

One evening I logged in to find some fellow standing on a fountain in the most populated area of Stormwind, repeatedly sending the command "/me spits on you." The /me command just does a basic emote text. So every player that saw the message believed this guy was specifically targetting them to /spit on them.

Completely basic stuff, but the people in the area just went completely loving unhinged. People were swearing at this guy, threatening his family, begging him to stop spitting on them. He just stood there and kept hitting his macro every 10 seconds or so, with a crowd of probably 50+ people screaming at him. Truly the largest amount of tears from the smallest effort I've ever seen.

One I masterminded way back in the pre-expansion days was a bit more interesting though. In WoW the most common method of getting around is taking taxi rides from flightmasters. Click the guy, pick your destination and you go zooming off on a bird or a bat or whatnot. Nowadays you just fly directly to your destination, but early in the life of WoW if you wanted to fly from A to E you had to stop at B C and D and manually take the next flight.

Fittingly back in this era, the vast majority of the Horde flightpaths on one continent went through a town called Crossroads. So one evening I hatched a plan on an Alliance character. I gathered up some friends and we headed over to the Crossroads, just outside the town where we could target the flightmaster NPC.

The flightmasters were pretty nasty NPCs to engage in combat back in those days. They were maximum level, and summoned griffons or bats to help fight. But I was playing a hunter, the class with plenty of ways to kite things around. So I shot the flightmaster, and immediately started hauling rear end towards some nearby mountains.

Friends were healing me or anyone else that was getting damaged, and to succesfully keep a mobs attentions you needed to hit it every few seconds. We kited this flightmaster NPC all the way across a zone, got him up into some mountains, and started running him in circles.

See, as long as the NPC was still alive, he wouldn't respawn. And as long as the NPC wasn't standing at his post, none of the Horde players going through the town could fly to their destinations. No players followed us as we kited the NPC away, so they had no idea what the hell had happened. The server even glitched out to make the effort perfect, as the NPC got stuck on some decoration and froze up so we didn't even need to kite him around and heal.

I took a ride back down to the town and peeked over the wall, there must have been a good 100+ Horde players standing around, wondering where the hell their flight NPC had dissapeared to. They probably assumed someone had killed him and he would respawn, but the NPC stayed bugged out a mile away from town for an hour or so. I believe a GM had to finally reset it.

I think it's just that the people he is playing with are terrible and cannot avoid/kill people who are knifing. There are plenty of times where people just run past the guy and don't even notice him so he gets an easy kill. Almost all of them are sprinting everywhere too which is a terrible idea. When you sprint in MW it takes a second to stop running and pull up your gun to aim, so if you run around a corner into another person who is standing still he will shoot you first. Since the knifing guy doesn't even need to aim a gun he can just wreck the people who are running around the map like idiots. So while the knife is powerful as hell, if you are playing smart its not really a problem unless they sneak up behind you.

I remember reading about Goon Squad doing the same thing once. Bael Modan is a underground fortress in an entirely different zone from Theramore. They then held it hostage there while demanding a ransom on the public WoW forums. Eventually a GM had to intervene and reset it.

He also baits them into sprinting. There's multiple times in the videos where, when someone sees him, he'll duck around a corner for a second then pop back out. When you do this, pubbies tend to assume you're running from them, and try and sprint after you, which gives you enough time to get close enough to knife without getting shot.

It's not really that the knife is overpowered, he's just really good at being unpredictable. It's much harder to pull this off on console versions, unless you play well with a really high controller sensitivity.

Hahaha "It's not supposed to be good. It's a knife"

The point of the knife is that it sucks because you should get shot before you get in range to use it. I can't see anything wrong or illogical with the idea that if you get close and stab someone in the neck with a knife that they drop instantly.

I see nothing wrong with terming it a humiliation when you are holding a shotgun and get knifed in the face.

Related to the WoW /spit story, WoW does not have the ability to steal from other players. Rogues have a Pick Pockets skill, but it only works on mobs.
