Welcome to owning a high end SUV. If it has 4wd and a V8 you can never expect anything better than 20. A Wrangler will never get any better than 18, due to the aerodynamic properties of a brick and the weight of one as well.

If you want some decent fuel economy, ability to go places, and some reliability, buy a Subaru Outback.

Holy poo poo this guy hit the nail on the head.

My mother has had two 4.7 grand Cherokees. For the money you pay and the reliability and gas millage, I've tried to talk her into a Subaru wagon. A Subaru wagon will perform just as well as a grand Cherokee but score better in every way.

You have to pay to play.

I had a 99 Grand Cherokee 4.7 Limited. It wasn't a bad SUV by any means. But god drat if random annoying poo poo didn't break. Don't get me wrong, when every thing was perfect, that was a dream machine. But stupid annoying poo poo would randomly break, windows wouldn't roll up, or the transmission randomly throwing codes.

Trust me I own a Range Rover now. If you want to talk about complicated poo poo, just give me a call. I can explain to you how there is 5 different circuits needed to roll down a window.

Buy a Subaru Outback for your DD. For the weekends and adventures, buy an XJ or an old Grand Cherokee that you can beat around in the bush. I love my Range Rover for a weekend driver, but gently caress driving that thing on a daily basis.

No kidding, unless you have a Diesel Liberty, welcome to the world of AWD/4x4 trucks and suv's where high teens is good mileage.

If/when I get back into jeeps again, I'm doing a cummins 4BT conversion or 3200 optimizer diesel from AM general.

That'll get me into the high 20's for sure... plus a ton of torque :clint:

Why couldn't he tow anything? That TDI motor should have some good torque.

A generic 1.9 VW TDi engine from something in the late-nineties-to-early-2000s makes maybe 150-200lbs.ft - a Commanche 4.0 would be 225lbs.ft and actually have some power. I'd take a TDi lump in a Suzuki (it's quite popular), but I wouldn't expect one to hack it in something XJ sized.

I love that my WJ's V8 makes more torque than the diesel version, but yeah, you have to be willing to take the hit on fuel economy.

Like ID said, not a ton of torque or power. My father's TDI only makes 90hp and I think 110lbs.ft of torque. He has a hitch on it and tries to tow things but it usually ends badly.

It did some strange poo poo. Some days it would go into limp mode, then it would be fine 50 miles later. Then it would just freak it self out and not go into gear. I made friends with the mechanic at the dealer, I gave him the car one night he tried every thing to replicate it, couldn't do it. The only thing we could remotely attribute it to was either bad grounds or a wire that was just barely making contact.

I broke something involved with the electric fan somehow when I replaced my radiator and t-stat. Every time it kicks on the entire jeep vibrates like crazy. I love this thing :)

On the bright side my coolant temp is steady at 200-210 now in all conditions I have tested. Before it would go as low as 150 while idling with the ac on, to as high as 220 when moving slowly through the city.

I have no money so what did I do? I went out and bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, It will be delivered Tuesday.

I originally went to get something better on gas than my 300, and instead I ended up getting something that gets worse mileage, but the grin on my face when I was driving the 6 speed was bigger than anything the 300 ever did for me.

I got the 3 piece hardtop and the sport model since I'll be doing a bunch of upgrades on it myself, such as the wheels. Oh god what did I get myself into!

Ok, I just changed the transmission fluid and filters on my WJ, and I have a query: What is the correct way to check the fluid level with V8 and the 545RFE? With the engine running, the answers I have are:

Handbook - in park*
Haynes manual - in neutral**
WJJeeps.com (and indeed the internet as a whole) - in park*
Instructions on the dipstick - in neutral

*Specifically says park for the V8. The I6 with the 42RE says neutral
**No distinction made between the V8 and I6 models

Now, I'm 90% sure that the correct method is with it in park, and that the Haynes copywriter was just being lazy - but why would my dipstick contradict what's in the manual?

Check it both ways. If it's within the safe range in either park or neutral, ignore the other reading :v:

I'd probably trust the dipstick.

What fluid did you use?

Gen-u-ine Mopar ATF+4. :keke:

I drove it around the block to get it all circulated a bit, and topped it up to be on the "cold" (the fluid felt ambient temperature to me) marks in park, which equates to a total of 5.5 litres put in.

I believe the "fluid change" quantity is meant to be 6.0 - 6.5 litres, so I guess it could take a bit more. I'll check again shortly, I've still got a pint left out of what I bought.

A 2012 starts under $26k. What your seeing is about par for prices, they're holding value well. This is why I went with a new one after trying to find a 2010/11. I paid less than I would've for the used ones.

If that's the case then I too would spring for a 2012 since they get a better engine than previous JK's. Or just get a TJ with the 4.0 :v: (pre-2007).

avoid the 04/05s (iirc), they have a cam/oil pump drive gear issue that results in the gear grenading and falling into your oil pan, and no oil pressure.

unfortunately this is not my MJ. It's a friend of mine's. He built it right, instead of the usual hackjob redneck crap you see...

and it has a 440. He wasn't all that happy with the 4.0L/NP435/D20 setup he had before, so now it has a mopar bigblock 440 mildly built, an NV4500 transmission, IIRC an NP241DHD doubler box, and an NP205 transfer case.

Still has the same 40" MTRs and locked front/rear 60s it had last time I posted it.

they still used renix on YJs in 91? Either you're wrong or Chrysler was a bunch of idiots. I'm almost certain they were on OBD-I by then.

EDIT: my 91 FSM says (page 8W-87, YJ wiring diagrams chapter page 12) that there are 4 fuel injectors for the 1991 2.5L YJ which implies MPFI, and to the best of my knowledge all RENIX 2.5s had TBI, with only one or two fuel injectors. Checking crank position sensor next.

EDIT2: it has a 3 wire logic level (OBD-I style) CPS as well, and a 4 wire bipolar step motor IACV, as well as an OBD-I diagnostic connector. Definitely OBD-I not RENIX.
