Is there a consensus on the best Android-compatible gamepad? I've been tricking my phone out with some sweet emulators, but my lovely plastic screen makes them a nightmare to control.

Seconding this. You can get a Wii-mote to work but it has too few buttons for some games. Gamestop sells a branded bluetooth controller specifically for use with Android but I own one and while it's not bad some of the buttons stick or require a harder press sometimes.

Just get a PS3 controller, plenty of buttons and actually designed to work well as a gamepad.

VVV yes that too

I ordered a Gametel bluetooth controller. It should be here next week sometime. I will post my findings once I have it.

On the other hand if you have a Classic Controller the Wiimote Controller app is free and works with all the programs you'd think it would work with. In some you'll have to go into the advanced settings and select "Allow Bluetooth keyboard" or something like that.

Also Nyko is releasing a couple of bluetooth controllers that have the added ability to map the buttons to onscreen controls. I'll wait for the reviews to see how well it works but it'll be probably be close to a day one purchase for me.

The main menu music scared the piss out of the dog. Right now he's curled up under a table, growling at my phone whenever I turn the sound back up.

Graphics looks sharp, UI is fairly clean and reminds me a bit of fallout crossed with Operation Darkness (in a good way.) You can rotate and zoom, and the interface is definitely intended to be played on a phone, I'm gonna love trying it on my tablet.

FYI the app icon is named "Wasted Lands" which took a b it to locate after I got it.

Okay, I've gotten through the tutorial and the first mission, and it seems so far to be a very well-polished game with a lot of thought and work put into it. The UI is clean and mostly efficient (although it took me a short while to get used to the tap or tap+hold interface), your units have "overwatch" abilities which let them make free attacks during enemy turns if they have enough Action Points left, and they gain skills and stats for being used in combat.

The story seems to have a good amount of thought and effort put in, with tons of quotes from Lovecraft stories and mythology, and characters which are almost recognizable from his stories as well.

The Operation Darkness comparison still seems fairly apropos this early into the game, although you're in WWI instead of WWII, there's a lot of switching to bayonets to shank enemies at close range, and layering attacks and fields of fire.

I can't wait to see one of the bigger, monstrous enemies, and then take him out with an artillery strike called in via homing pigeon! :D

You'll need Android OS version 2.3 (aka Gingerbread), OpenGL ES 2.0 plus a touch screen to run the game. The developers have tested the game on a range of devices including HTC, Samsung and Acer and are confident it will work on most touchscreen tablets and phones.
I'm gonna try it on my Transformer tonight after I charge it.

The stuff that dreams are made of.
So how about X-COM clones? I noticed 2 in the list on the second post (Xenowar and UFO: Alien Invasion), can anyone comment on them or any others I might have missed? Top down turn based strategy games seem like they would be a slam dunk on a phone, and I'd love to get my X-COM fix that way.

Also, how well does Ur'Quan Masters control on a phone? I feel like the combat might be a little hard to translate to a touch interface.

You get Large from Stocking and Showcase from Style, possibly vice versa. They're both based on your employee skills earning you a trophy and getting you a trophy reward. Just managed to do it finally in year 11, month 11. I think an employee needs to break 300 in that stat but I'm not entirely sure.

Xenowar is basically a simpler version of X-COM, quite adapted to play on a phone in my opinion. Didn't play Alien Invasion, and the Ur'Quan Masters port works well, but good luck in fights without an actual keyboard.

I personally haven't seen anything designed with JUST tablets in mind, however there are a lot of games that support tablets so they're not all stretched out weird and in most cases take advantage of the extra real estate. Also the Prime has a preloaded app called TegraZone that helps you find games that support the hardware, the selection is slim but does have quite a few notables like Shadowgun, Siegecraft, and GTA III (FYI it just links to the Play store, it's not a whole separate store). You can also look for the "THD" keyword (Tegra High Def or Tablet High Def, I forget, either way with the Prime you're covered).

I turned out have this issue (Nook Tablet running CM7) and no amount of tapping, double-tapping, or long-pressing will select a dude a lot of the time. Usually the buttons work on the second or third tap. There's also no way to exit the app (on an iPad port? shocking), it's a permanent wakelock unless killed from Manage Apps or similar.

On the other hand, both of these issues appear to be a common complaint so presumably they'll be fixed quickly. A $5 game is hard to sell with this kind of thing stacking up in the Play reviews.

Also, for whatever reason, their specific Google Play page has been taken down at least temporarily; all the other app pages I randomly tried load fine, but this one throws a "We're sorry, there was an error. Please try again later." It's an internal error page, not a 404 or something.

I wonder why they decided to implement pinch-to-zoom backwards?
