Hey a mint looking '82 CB750!

. . .

For 4k, "reserve not met" at $500. :eng99: Then again it's Ridgefield, although as I type that in I know it's a regional reference that no one will get.

Ridgefield is a VERY wealthy part of CT, where a lot of people have their second homes from New York. Sidewalks are perfect, lawns tailored: it's a place where people wander around wearing sweatsuits and 10k Rolexs because they have so much money they don't give a crap. I had a buddy who lived up there and the place always gave me a "Stepford Wives" type of vibe. I had a mohawk and a fu-manchu at the time and all I got up there were :stare: looks.

All that is just to bandwagon in on the "hipsters/scenesters have ruined cheap Hondas" rant, I suppose.

EDIT: Back on topic here's one that looks more promising, a Honda CX-500, $900: http://hartford.craigslist.org/mcy/3051605046.html

And it still boggles my mind that 50cc bikes require no license at all (not even a driver's license!) in some states. poo poo's crazy.

Here in WA you don't need a motorcycle license to ride <50cc bikes, but you still need a driver's license. And kitting/modifying a 50cc doesn't quite get you out of it, since 30mph and 2bhp are also restrictions. And your bike can be immediately impounded if you're caught riding it without an endorsement - so if you get popped for speeding at 35mph, you're pretty well boned.

Bloody hell that's nice. I've noticed several Gran Canyons having Ducati stickers on the tank, I always thought it was owner vanity as Cagiva wasn't as hot a brand, but perhaps the importers/factory thought so as well and actually sold them like that.

I've never been on an 850T, but I rode a v50 of that vintage and while it produced a bit less hp than my cx500, it was much much lighter (75 lbs iirc)and as cliched as this poo poo sounds, that bike had serious character. I've been bugging my future father in law (poo poo, I'm getting married in 2 weeks!) to give me his non running v50 - III as a wedding present....but I doubt he'd give it away until he's old and can no longer ride on 2 wheels.

The Virago, at least that version of it, has a very good looking v-twin and rear end so it seems like a great platform for customizing. How it rides, no idea. I wonder...sumo forks, centerstand, rear end lift...v-twin adv?

Anyway, the newer version just looks like the normal imitation Harley.

Hah, that'd be great. Make a budget supermoto! Or at least something cooler than a typical "cafe" mod.

To be fair, it looks like the early '80s Honda CX500 is pretty well liked online *and* also very moddable. I may be able to snatch one up for $700 running, and finally get commuting. :pervert:

Double post for buying update. I checked out a '81 Honda CX500C a little while ago.

The good: The guy has title and maintenance records. The thing starts right up and idles like a champ at 1500 rpm. All the lights work. Clutch and brakes seem pretty good. It has a center stand.

The not-so-good: Front light is rusted on top. Surface rust on a lot of the chrome, including a patch on the exhaust. Seat is ripped up a bit. Front forks leak a little. Minor rot in the rear tire (which means an immediate change). Paint job is FUBAR basically. Minor (dime sized) dent at the very top of the tank. Cracked right mirror.

He is going to let it go for around $600. This will be for my first bike which I plan to ride the poo poo out of. I like how it runs and idles pretty well. Nothing really makes me nervous except the spread of the rust, and the battery, forks, and tire seem annoying but necessary given the age of the bike.

The CX-500 has gotten a lot of love online, and I kind of like the direct drive instead of the chain (though I have no real idea how hard that is to maintain :ohdear:). So what do you guys think? I'm looking at ANOTHER CX-500 (just the standard, not the 'custom' like this one) later today. It's a similar price point, but it may prove to be better maintained.

FAKE EDIT: By the by, does anyone know if posting pics directly from my G+ account would be "image leeching?" I keep pulling the pics off to my imgur account for fear of probation.

I think the idea of the image leeching rule is to prevent some poor guy's server from going down or using up all its bandwidth in a day when 40,000 goons access the same image in a row. Google can probably handle it.

e: there was also something about how URLs you don't control can be replaced behind your back with porn or goatse or whatever, but G+ should be okay in that regard too

CXs are good first bikes. The shaft drive is low-maintenance. If you get one, you might want to do the fluid change or whatever it's gonna need soon, and then not worry about it probably ever because you'll upgrade before it's time to mess with it again.

The main concern I would have about the surface rust is what's hiding on the bottom of the tank. A friend of mine bought a CX and it almost immediately started leaking from the tank mount bracket area. Upon scrutiny, we discovered the tank was barely holding together. A new used tank wasn't especially expensive, and simple to install.

I've been riding around a '78 or '79 CX500C as my first bike and honestly, I'd go for the "standard" model rather than the custom.

This is personally preference, but I don't care for the shape of the handlebars or the overall riding position and the gas tank is ridiculously small on the custom as well.

But, they are easy bikes to ride (IMO) and good to start out on!

Another youthful indiscretion
I had a CX500C as my first bike, and can definitely second the recommendation to track down a CX500 or a CX500D for the larger gas tank: the tiny, peanut-style tank on the Custom model only ever got me about 120-130 miles before running dry.

Other than that, it's a great beginner bike, if a bit on the heavy side.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm psyched. Yeah I *thought* I was looking at a standard model next, but from the pics it looks like another custom:

Ah well. I'd rather have a solid, somewhat annoying bike, then no bike at all. It'll do me well for starting purposes at least, and the price can't be beat. It's AMAZING how much less the CXs sell under the CB line.

I wouldn't worry too much about range on a custom vs. the standard. By the time you hit 100 miles on either model, you'll be looking for an excuse to hop off for a few.

I am the CA de facto broken record regarding early 80s charging issues, and I don't mind bringing it up again here because for the CX series it can be a particularly monstrous rear end pain. Bad stator = engine has to come out. Be sure to bring up this subject with the owner, and if possible test/monitor. Gnarly has probably had two or three or a dozen of these pass through his hands, so he can probably give you the CX-specific quick and dirty method if it exists.

It was the Achilles heel on these and why a lot of them got parked and forgotten and still look relatively newish. An unscrupulous seller will avoid the topic or pretend not to know, and remember it's only guaranteed till the end of the driveway. Other than that, it's bulletproof and capable of ultra high miles.

Edit: errr, the broken record status applies to the late 70s as well.

Where is the stator in that? Longitudinal engines are gloriously maintainable on the ends that stick out. Valve jobs can be done in the gas station, even without getting out of the saddle on a v-twin. I guess there's always a cloud around every silver lining. BMWs have their clutch deep in the middle of the bike, how's working on the CX clutch?

I seem to attract GL/CX bikes like no one's business, not sure how that happens, but I've never paid more than a few hundred bucks for one.

Anyways, the clutch is located in a relatively sane location, IIRC, a normal clutchpack towards the front of the engine. But the stator and waterpump are buried in the middle of the engine, so if either of those go you're dropping the engine and splitting the cases. .

Ok so the 2nd CX I looked at . . . not so good. It wouldn't start even WITH a new battery installed which is REALLY bad (thank you guys A TON for warning me about the starter problems). First red flag. The headlights weren't automatic, but wired into a toggle switch electrical taped to the handlebars. The crash guards around the engine were burned and scratched to poo poo, and there was a HUGE dent in the exhaust.

I shamefully couldn't even ride the thing, I kept stalling out which in turn needed the bike to be jumped anew (performance anxiety). Although I will say it's probably only half my fault (ok maybe three-quarters) cause the clutch was super squishy.

Pics of the mess:

It's a shame too. The block looked a lot cleaner than the first CX I looked at. Anywho. I'll see if the first CX-500 is still up for sale. Feelin a little bummed, really wanted one of these cheapo bikes to work out. You get what you pay for, I guess?

It's only half as bad as a GL1000 though. Getting a CX motor out to do a triple bypass is cake compared to getting the goldwing's motor out.

The easiest solution is to drop the motor onto a dolly and lift the rest of the bike to the celiing. (I don't have a whole lot of room to be maneuvering engines and carts and bikes around simultaneously.)

God knows the rest of the bike seems a hell of a lot lighter than the engine.
