I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I do an enormous amount of scanning material in. Every page I scan is edited down to the exact same canvas size, shrunk the exact same amount, and (usually) leveled to the same value as the rest of the pages in any given set. I've been using Paint.net for this, and I've scoured the program and help files, but I've been unable to find if there's a way to apply all of these values across multiple images? If I could crop/shrink/level 30 images in one pass that'd save so much time.

I don't know about paint, but in photoshop you can record actions and then replay them for other images in the actions window. Maybe there is something similar there.

Ok, so I have never, ever, ever made art on a computer before. I just purchased a tablet, and although it came with some free software, I wanted to know what the standard program is to use for freeform graphic art. I'm also interested in making a graphic novel on my computer, so perhaps there's a specific program for that too? Or the same one? I'm so confused.

Okay so I need help with this; Which one of these is shaded right? People are always telling me to shade with colors that aren't black but every time I don't use a color that is near black it looks really flat. I just don't get it. And I don't know what colors to even use to shade? When I look at something in real life I don't think "Well that's definetely a red shadow," it just looks like a shadow. I feel like a really bad artist now because I apparently don't get this.

What I'm still baffled about though is that when you see a red ball in real life the shadows don't usually look that blue, what kinds of colors would you use if you're shading something in a normally lit environment, like a sunny day or a decently lit room with standard lamps? Do shadows always have to be a cool color, and do highlights always have to be a warm color? I've heard that you're supposed to use a color that corresponds to the temperature since light is warm and shadows are cool, but under that logic how would you justify blue highlights and red shadows?

It is nonsense. Reflected light is reflected light - when it hits your retina, it's a translated into a color. The tone as it goes to shadow is a gradient of that color. Our eyes can pick that up fairly easily. This is how I understand it. Granted I use traditional materials so I may be off-base on the computer related poo poo but I'll give it a whack. There are a few things going on here. Just looking at your sketch I can see that you have issues with accuracy, tone, and color, and you need to understand all three. People telling you to mix with colors not black, that's mostly a throwback to people who use traditional materials. If I have a pigment like vermillion or cadmium red, both very different but intense reds, and mix a carbon based black ("ivory black") into them they won't darken, they'll go brown. I can mix other pigments in gradient to change tone and they won't go as brown. The other side of this is people will tell you to use blues for shaded areas. This is for a few reasons - because the complimentary colors will help your highlights pop, and it will also bring down the tonal range that you employ. What you're doing wrong on that count is starting with a ball that's completely red. You want reds for the highlights, blues for the deep shadows, and something in-between for the gradients. And that's something you just have to work with and get used to until it "looks right." Actually doing it is the only way you will learn. What you really need to watch out for with computers is your tone accuracy. You CAN use black/greys to shade a color but black is something we very rarely experience as visual creatures. Beginners tend to overcompensate with black way too much. My serious feedback is that you're putting the cart before the horse. Work on line and tone and forget about color for a year. Be able to knock out a shaded circle/square/triangle volume without even thinking about it. The color work will be a lot easier if your understanding and employment of line and tone are solid.

It's a red ball sitting on a white surface, there should be a ton of white reflecting onto the bottom, and the white surface should have reflected red on it. And because the human eye is a kludgy thing, the shadowed areas look like they have elements of the opposite colour in them. Get a photo and get an eyedropper tool to sample and pick out exactly what colours are in each section, and they'll be quite different from your initial expectations. http://www.artinstructionblog.com/drawing-lesson-a-theory-of-light-and-shade has a pretty in-depth explanation. Line and tone are something that I had to work on a lot in high school, so I don't think that's the problem. I don't particularly remember any of my high school art teachers going over shading in color in any sort of depth at all, so that's probably part of the problem. I wasn't really focused on making a perfect circle with neat shading at the time when I made that image, I just needed feedback on shading in color. I think it definitely helps now that I've got a different perspective on it now that everyone here has helped. I'll keep working on it.

The reason people talk about warm highlights and cool shadows is mainly because sunlight is warm yellow, and the sky is blue. When you have an object outside, surfaces which are in shadow are only in shadow relative to the sun. They're being illuminated by the skyglow, which is blue. Does anyone know of a simple sine-wave plugin effect for After Effects CS5.5? I'm having a hell of a time reducing aliasing with the Wave Warp effect since I have the settings jacked so high, and all the plugins I have are too complicated or over-the-top for what I'm trying to do. I'm simply trying to warp a comp of shapes over time in a sinuous, looping manner. You can see how hideous the quality is even with all settings on best/high and "continuously rasterize" checked (which helps somewhat but not enough). the initial object is just a comp of vector shapes created in AE:

My silly creative director built some of his files all in Photoshop (me - I made my poo poo into smart objects so I can edit in Illustrator). They contain live text layers. How do I gather those fonts from the PS file so the next user has them?

If you're using FontExplorer, it has a Detect Fonts in Document feature that may or may not work, I've never tried it for PSDs (or for a PSD's Smart Objects, for that matter). If you've got the cash, it also looks like there's this plugin, although I have no idea about it's quality or compatibility.

Yeah, that's what I did, the manual way. Sucks. Stupid creative director. I did convince him to use smart objects though so that's a plus (I just opened them in Illustrator and saved 'em with a different name in order to run a scoop on them for fonts, images, etc.).

I ended up using Bender from Boris FEC and moving the shape across a field of points that warped it, then reversing the motion in another comp to freeze it. I think I was just maxing out the Wave Warp settings so heavily it wasn't handling it correctly. I got a perfect result from that filter:

I just picked up an old cnc vinyl cutter and got it working. I don't have much in the way of vinyl so I replaced the cutting head with a sharpie and it seems to be kicking out drawings for me. I do 0 work in graphics design so I don't have a bunch of stock images laying around for testing and 'vector images' is a terrible google search. I'm looking for a vector image or 10 that are wacky-complicated to throw at it and see if I can make it choke. It'd be nice if it looked like a cool thing when it finishes (if it finishes).

Adobe Encore, Scenarist NT, DVD Maestro are all professional level solutions, although it can be done with Free software if you don't mind pulling a bit of hair and getting your hands dirty. It's a bit of a specialized skill to do it correctly, guys mastering DVD (BlueRays, etc) for Hollywood get paid some decent coin, from what I hear. At least these days you can mount and test ISOs in a virtual drive, so you don't have to burn a pile of coasters. It all depends how complicated it is, really. If it's just a menu with "start movie" or "extras", one audio track - pretty basic. If it's multiple languages of audio, scene selector, extras, director commentary - becomes a more complicated job. The best place for tutorials, downloads, questions on anything homebrew video related is probably still Doom 9 https://www.doom9.org A few years ago I converted a bunch of old family movies and put them on DVD, with menus and a 'scene chooser'. I can't remember what software in particular I used, but I followed a tutorial from there and it came out well, but was a simple project.

Thanks! The current DVD menus look like complete garbage, so I think I'll be able to get away with just making an improved image background and maybe eventually learn how to make more complex ones.
