You'll get 4G. They can't just arbitrarily prevent an LTE phone from connecting to the LTE network and becoming 3G only.

Yes, but they have to give you a SIM card. Nothing stopping them from saying no SIM on your 3G plan, you must switch.

Anyway, I'm hoping you're right since I'm in the same boat.

I don't know how Verizon's international roaming works but Verizon iPhones are GSM unlockable so you can buy a SIM in Europe to use if you want. Just call Verizon and make the request. They'll mark you phone in their system, and when you have your European SIM you just need to insert and connect to wifi.

If not then you can probably call in to disable roaming.

I just found out that Verizon iPhones don't have SIM cards so I guess I'll have to figure out some way to disable roaming. I looked on their site to see if they had some sort of travel package and they do, just not for iPhones. And they charge like $20 per megabyte when roaming.

Edit: Found an actual setting in iOS to turn voice and data roaming off

Chances are there won't even be a cdma network to connect to. I tried in Spain and never got a signal. Just make sure you turn your cell radio off otherwise it'll eat your battery alive trying to find a tower.

All I'm going to get out of him is a snappy one-liner and, if I'm real lucky, a brand new nickname.
The Verizon iPhone 4 lacks a (usable) GSM radio and sim card slot. The 4S howevercan work just fine in most GSM countries. Call Verzion customer service and ask to be transfered to Global Support to request having the phone GSM unlocked. They usually will unlock the phone as long as your account is in good standing and you've been with Verizon for a couple months. When you get to your destination, check the local cell providers for a micro sim.

I'd recommend the charging station and an extended battery. Yeah, I think you either have a screwed up phone or are some sort of ultra power user or something. I can go all day with normal usage on my GNex, only using the standard battery. I have LTE on, use WiFi where available, and use auto dimming on my screen, but thats about it. Does your phone constantly feel warm? If so, I'd go get it checked out because thats not normal.

One of my GNex went 18+ hours and lost 20%. Mostly idle, but come on, that's good battery handling. Mine runs all day just fine, except when it's in a poor service area. The radio is the real issue with the phone, the battery is fine.

Hmm. Totally just got 31 hours on a full charge. 85% of that or so was w just being on 3g. Only need 4g when I'm home, and there battery life is irrelevant. After doing a full, balls deep burn w 4g on, I got around 6hours? Comming from a Droid X where I could easily get through a day, I would say I'm pretty satisfied. I actually own a Razr MAXX right now; I decided to pony up the extra cash for the battery life. So far the battery lasts up to 4 days, sometimes longer. It all depends on what your doing with the phone.

The Razr has a great deal on it right now. My brother decided to buy one last week. The 4G is great, and he gets 4 Gigabytes on his data plan due to the family plan at the same price of 2. I would suggest those looking at a new smartphone from Verizon get a Razr, or pony up for the MAXX version. The iPhone costs to much!

I just got my Razr Maxx in the mail today, and I love this phone - especially coming from the Thunderbolt. Thank you to all who recommended me the phone - it holds onto a signal like no other, the battery life is amazing, and the DAC is better than what was in the 'Bolt. Hopefully ICS drops quickly....not a fan of Motoblur, but it is less intrusive than Sense.

...which is exactly what it does. I was on 4G from 9a-10p, and got down to 15% battery with all the Google services/work email on push/twitter syncing/a shitload of texting/wordfeud/running awful forums app during that time.

People with bad experiences are more vocal than the majority of us who don't have the peripheral issues, which isn't surprising. I would be pissed too. That said, I wouldn't trade the marginal battery for the lack of stock Google and updates. Hell, my Xoom is just as updated as my phone because it's running clean Google architecture and that's over a year old.

Its the only (modern) phone that runs vanilla Android, so its really your only choice. 4.0.4 has made stock battery life probably 200% better than it used to be. I just got my warranty replacement (due to the dreaded random data dropping, etc.) and I might not even root/flash a custom ROM/kernel because 4.0.4 is drat good right now.

She likes it a lot better than her work issued iPhone 4.

No kidding - my 1st smartphone was a Bold 9650, so the Thunderbolt was like a godsend after a year of dealing with the BlackBerry. But after 3 replacement phones for various issues, I finally had enough. My friends with other HTC Verizon devices (Incredible & Incredible 2) don't have any complaints - lesson learned about being a early adopter I guess.

My fiancé and I currently have unlimited data. I’m already 4G (happy Razr owner), however, my fiancé isn’t due for an upgrade until October 2012. I’d like to find a way to keep her on unlimited data, but I’m not sure what to do. I was thinking of two options:

1. Last night, her mom was talking to her and she has two upgrades on her plan. She is going to use one and the other is on a line that she is/was going to get rid of. Is there any way that we could somehow get a 4G phone off of her mom’s upgrade without causing her all kinds of fees when we transferred the phone to my fiance’s line on our plan? I’m guess there is all kinds of “fine print” gibberish that prevents this.
2. Buy a cheaper, used 4G phone to use temporarily as a “place holder” to keep the unlimited data and buy the phone she wants (a white SGS3) at a later point and resell the used phone.

Any other suggestions on upgrading her from 3G to 4G without losing unlimited? Or are we hosed?

You can't use an upgrade and then cancel the line; that's not fine print, that's pretty much exactly why the termination fee exists.

Verizon phones depreciate like rocks, and the SGS III is saddled with fugly unnecessary Android customizations and support from Samsung, a vendor who has shown a terrific lack of giving-a-gently caress for its customers over the years. After all, why update the software when there's like nine more derivative models they could be selling you?

I'd just craigslist a Galaxy Nexus, seriously. It's like $300 or less, it's supported directly by Google, and it'll get her locked into unlimited LTE 'til carrier-switch do they part. The loving stupid GS3 will cost $200 anyway, and that includes jacking someone into extending their contract.

EDIT: Just slap this bitch on it, bam, instant white-phone.

Well, remember this is for someone that uses an out-of-the-box, non-rooted HTC Droid Incredible (with constant disk space issues), has no interest in anything like rooting or developing and lacks any general “gently caress skins”-attitude. For her, the important things are battery life, call quality and reliability and everything I’ve read online (SA and elsewhere) pretty much steers me from getting her a Galaxy Nexus due to battery life and crap call quality and signal strength. However, it looks like I need to hit up Ebay/Craigslist fast and find something that we could activate on her line pronto. She likes my Razr, but its too big for her to text one-handed.

Any other suggestions for smaller-cased 4G phones that are fairly up-to-date and might even get ICS?
