Might be Year of the Job from SH/SC. If so, I'm going to guess it's drinking Bawls.

I thought it was the World Trade Centers: one collapsing, and one damaged but standing. So, uh, things could always be worse?

Or this.

I always thought it was a picture of what looks like a big bomb going off, but then it pans up to a spaceport launch gantry and you realize that it's just the side-directed exhaust from a rocket, so it's saying "try to understand the whole issue before you overreact to what you think you're seeing."

Could be totally wrong, though.

There are a few common avatars I don't know the backstory to: One is a picture of a chubby lady with something like "Will never amount to anything in life" as the text; one is what seems to be a cartoon rendering of a ventriloquist's dummy; the last is from the Diablo III subforum, it's a pile of gold coins with the text ":shepface:God I loving love Diablo 3 gold, it even paid for this lovely title:shepface:." If anyone can clarify those I'd have less to wonder about while I browse the forums.

The "Will not amount to anything in life" was from a thread where Abe stepped in and had people take pictures of themselves holding a sign that said "*poster* will never amount to anything in life". I don't remember who the poster was but they deserved it. He then picked the gooniest looking picture and gave that to everyone who participated as an avatar.

Don't know the last one, but the first one is actually the picture of a (male) goon who posted the picture in I one of Abe's mod challenges.

See this annoying gimmickposter basically made a thread asking goons to vicariously fulfill his lifelong dreams and ambitions (yes, it is that sad). Eventually Abe made it a mod challenge that the only thing that could be posted was a picture of whichever goon was currently posting holding a sign saying "Will amount to nothing in life." When the thread closed he changed everyone who posted in the thread's avatar to one of the goons who submitted a picture. Thread here.

The second one is when Ozma got drunk or something (???) in TVIV and changed everyone who didn't have an av on the last page of the King of the Hill thread to that dummy picture, which was a character on KotH.

The Diablo 3 one is because of the Real Money Auction House. Where you can trade in game items for a maximum of $250 per item. You can then have that go to paypal or go towards a credit on your battle.net account.

The diablo gold avatar: nobody really knows, just that for about 2-3 pages everyone was bombed with it. The going theory is that one of the people who made a killing selling d3 gold (more than one person has broken $1000) is responsible, but nobody has fessed up.

Yep, Year of the Job. Bunch of IT grognards were making themselves miserable and physically ill due to their poo poo jobs with crazy people (and probably the alcoholism) declared an end to poo poo jobs, quit, went and got good jobs (and their mental health back)(but kept the alcoholism). Its turned into more of an Era of the Job as the year ended but more SH/SC denizens bail on further poo poo jobs.
