If you used to watch Fight Klub on MTV you might be interested to know that SMACK/URL has announced that Serius Jones is returning to battle Charlie Clips at Summer Madness 2. Also on the card Loaded Lux battles Calicoe, Murda Mook battles Iron Solomon and many more. If I was in NYC this event would be worth going to.

Nah, I agree really, everyone preps anyway and have for a long time or at least that's my engagement with it. But there's sort of a balance of talent involved in being able to prep well versus being able to respond to things in a live situation. If everybody leans mainly on preparation beforehand, it basically turns into who can write better as the main thing without the lively interaction that I like. I don't have a problem with preparation - that's just smart - but too much writing and not enough freestyle means they might as well be phoning in bars for people to judge later.

I mean, certainly freestyling is a skill and some use it well for retorting or flipping something on the spot in the realm of battle rapping. I just see a lot of people always being like 'THATS NOT A FREESTYLE' as if professionals should be judged by some unrealistic and completely arbitrary standard. Just because you and your friends (not literally you, this is rhetorical) have lovely freestyle battles/ciphers when you're bored does not mean that everybody who does not 100% freestyle is somehow devoid of merit or talent.

The only redeeming quality I can see to the whole RAP BATTLE thing is that the dudes are coming up with stuff off their heads and freestyling. Otherwise it's just a bunch of clowns who can't make actual songs thinking up lame-rear end insults. Most of the dudes who are actually able to make real music do so. Anyone who isn't actually releasing albums or w/e and writes the stuff they use in their battles is just failing at two things. Come on now, guy. That's dumb as gently caress. But seriously, Riff Raff's twitter "beef" between him and Soulja Boy is funny. Riff Raff is doing what I hoped most of these people would: explain that it's just business and he's not with them. Also, using all caps except for Is. Well, I don't like that but that's Riff Raff for ya.

Listening to it, it's amazing to believe they didn't google search or otherwise research that the song was about selling crack. I'm sorry, but where did you reach the conclusion that 25 lighters meant selling crack? The producer of the song (DJ DMD) has stated basically this in a couple of interviews: quote:I wanted it to mean … to be a symbol for, uh, just people getting their money on, getting their hustle on,” he says. “Working a nine-to-five or you doing whatever, you know. I’m just trying to get people to concentrate on getting their money on in a feel-good type of way. You know what I mean, ’25 Lighters’ is just like a symbol of that. ‘Cause if you really think about it, how can lighters get you paid anyway? Everybody has been having their own, like, ideals of what ’25 Lighters’ mean. I done heard, uh, dope, crack. I’ve heard people use some of the wildest things in what they thought ’25 Lighters’ was. It can mean whatever anybody wants it to be about in a feel-good type of way.” Basically, 25 Lighters is whatever you want it to be and despite what a few people online say, lighters is not a common slang for a vial of crack. I know DMD is kind of doing this as an after-thought and there are people who claim that low level crack dealers would drain cheap lighters and replace them with crack, but that seems a little far-fetched. I've always understood it as 25 Lighters is just about having an excess of something and Lighters can represent selling drugs, can be guns, etc Diodeous fucked around with this message at 17:19 on Jun 19, 2012 |

http://potholesinmyblog.com/engineer-rants-about-j-dillas-rebirth-of-detroit/quote:The team at The Find appears to have found what could be a pretty huge statement against the newly released J Dilla posthumous LP, Rebirth of Detroit. While his name is unknown, an engineer who worked on the album posted a lengthy message to “clear everything up” about what’s been going on regarding the project. He’s likely referring to the recent Twitter battles/on-the-low nonsense that’s been brewing between some artists on the album and the dude who helped put it together, Jonathan Taylor. If it's true, what a terrible situation.
