How can I get the Play Market to stop finding apps I only paid for through Amazon App Store and bugging me to update them? Similarly, how can I get Amazon App Store to quit bugging me to update apps that I already had from Google Play?

For example, right now I have Angry Birds Rio that I got on the Amazon App Store, because it was originally the only place with the ad-free version for sale. However, Google Play Market is now detecting it and bugging me to update it - and can't get it to just ignore it exists and let Amazon handle it. I also had Documents-to-go come with my tablet but had it purchased on Amazon App Store for my phone, so on my tablet Amazon keeps bugging me to update it through them.

I'm having these problems on both my phone and my tablet. My phone is rooted so a solution that needs that will work there, but my tablet isn't so I can't use a fix that requires root there.

I thought the play store did special checks now so that non-market apps wouldn't show up? I certainly haven't had any non-market apps show up in a long time. Are you sure you're on the newest Play Store?

They don't show up for me, but Go Launcher recently added a feature to let you know if there's a newer version of an app in your app drawer, and it doesn't really care where you got it from. One of the things I hate about the Amazon App Store is that when poo poo does update, I don't know what's changed. Hell, I don't even think there's a way to tell what version they've got available without actually downloading it, so I can't even easily cross-reference with the Play Store.

Yes on both devices. In fact, it only started happening about 2 or 3 weeks ago

I think Titanium allows you to link/unlink apps to/from the Play Store. I may be wrong, and you may need root privileges for it.

EDIT: Doesn't appear to be possible any more according to this other random forum I found while Google searching: here.

Let's make a list of the ways that Google sucks.

  1. The app lists on the Google Play website are horrible. You get this big list of apps you've installed, with no way to filter them in any way, and it doesn't even list all of them! My app list only goes up to apps starting with the letter N.
  2. Google Music can't shuffle correctly and it's been almost a year without fixing it.
  3. Google Voice app has all sorts of irritating bugs. The app had two very minor updates this year to add minor features, and then the previous update was in September...of 2010.
  4. No tablet versions of major Google apps. [bull3964]
  5. No easily accessible built in back up and restore function to make switching phones painless. [bull3964] From what I understand, the worst part about this is that the facility is there, it just doesn't have a UI.
  6. No built in way to remote wipe your phone from your Google account. [bull3964]
  7. No MMS via Voice. [berzerker]
  8. Talk, Messenger, Hangouts, Voice...why the hell all these different things for real-time communication?
  9. Google Tasks is sucky and stagnant. [berzerker]
  10. Default MMS app can't handle iphones group messages. [Gyshall]
  11. Back button is behavior is too complicated. Sometimes it takes you back up a level in the app, sometimes back to the home screen...who knows what it's going to do?
  12. In general managing your account is a pain in a lot of ways. Can't change your Gmail account ortransfer your apps to another account.
  13. 95% of the time when you click a voicemail notification the transcript doesn't show up. You have to click the little Voice icon at the top to go back to the voicemail list (not the back button, since that will just take you out of the app), wait a second for it to sync, and then go back in to the voicemail.

What else?

Is it too late to add to this list?

My personal pet peeve is with the behaviour of the headset button for playing and pausing music. It's seriously unresponsive compared to an iDevice, taking at least a second to register and respond when the music player is active, and 2 or more seconds when it is inactive, in this case often mis-registering button presses. On my old iPhone 3GS, the buttons presses registered almost instantly, never misread the number of presses, and playback would start without delay.

It seems like a minor thing, but when you're used to being able to easily and reliably play/pause songs, go forwards and backwards through playlists, and change volume without having to reach into your pockets or coat (not to mention whether your button presses are interpreted correctly by the device) the lack of polish and ease in the experience is really jarring and frustrating. It really lines up with the reasoning for most of the other items in the list of criticisms. When you consider that a large part of the reason we even have iPhones is because of the success of the iPod, which was successful due to the very good user experience, and that the iPod experience was maintained with the iPhone, Android should be trying to at least match that user experience if they want to be considered as-good.

I assume the reason for the unresponsiveness is the high latency audio subsystem, which seems to have been an issue with and a criticism of Android since it was released. It's supposedly the reason why the iPad has better musical instrument apps, iOS has a far lower latency for audio events.

I also started to look into why there were no Android headsets with volume controls which changed the devices volume (as opposed to the headset's volume). It appears to be an apple-only thing at the moment. This guy reverse engineered the iPhone headset volume protocol and it seems that the hardware is designed to stop apple unapproved volume controls working with apple devices, but there doesn't seem to be anything stopping the volume control signals being recognised by a device which doesn't care about authentication. Volume up and volume down events are communicated by voltage drops on the control line. If the Android audio APIs expose this voltage information it ought to be possible to make the device respond to the volume control buttons, but I haven't looked into it any further yet. It'd make the experience much better.

To me, a great example of how much better Apple is at having a consistent vision based upon an intuitive and pleasant user experience is how iPhone headset remote controls (play/pause, volume up/down) work as expected when plugged into Apple notebooks. I really wish Google would get their act together and start thinking about the user experience, there's so much wasted potential at the moment.

Expecting any Android phone to be close to the iPhone for music playback is simply unrealistic. Spotify covers nearly all of the original software problems for me these days, but you still get hardware problems like yours and mediocre at best DACs because of cheap manufacturers.

This is a niche question but, I was wondering if it were possible to run an app so that your volume up button takes the functionality of your power button for the sake of waking up and sleeping your phone.

My power button broke so this would be extremely helpful. Or is this something that needs a rooted phone?

You'd need to run custom software to get this functionality. CM9 offers this and I think CM7 did too.

Why? If you said "for sound quality" then I'd agree as manufacturers seem to have a hardon for cheaping out on DACs, but there's no good reason why the OS shouldn't get an overhaul of the audio subsystem to sort the latency out.

I find it interesting that you'd rather try to muck about in your phone's hardware before simply flashing a new ROM.

I mean...yeah, maybe you really like the software that's on there now, but surely you should at least try a software solution before possibly breaking your phone for good if you mess up?

Have you looked into the Priority Inbox feature of GMail? It will automatically tag your emails and put less important items in your inbox. The Android GMail app can be setup to only show important items as notifications instead of all e-mails received.

I don't like automated inboxes. Like I said, I don't want to have anything unread in my inbox because I use multiple platforms for these e-mail addresses. I also don't want anything to slip through the cracks. I'd like to just be able to mark something as read without actually having to open up the gmail app.

Categorize your inbox and realize that maybe not 100% of the stuff that you get you need to read on your phone. Create filters that auto archives and labels it so it doesn't ding your phone but still shows up as unread in that label.

See Jay? I read Jay's emails but nothing Jay sends I need to know RIGHT THIS VERY INSTANT THANK GOD FOR MOBILE EMAIL. I get home and all labels that have unread items are bold on the left.

As for your original request, you're probably poo poo out of luck. I run through a lot of mail clients and still come back to the native one.

This is the correct answer. The only labels I have set to go "ding" are the Inbox and the one I filtered everything from Facebook into (because the Facebook app seems to be incapable of actually making its notifications work). I have 12 other labels where the majority of my mail goes. Basically it's all set up so that if I get email from family, friends or someone who hasn't emailed me before it goes "ding", otherwise it doesn't.

Yeah if you're happy with Sense I guess stick with what you know but I will tell you that rooting the DHD will also SIM unlock your phone too and CM7 works well for it (but CM9 does not).

On the other hand you're due to get an official 4.0.x release of the software so if you're happy with Sense you might as well stick with it.
